Hello,

New to the game and really liking it. Tried lots of the fighters and would like to try a bomber now. So....how do you bomb? Is it all manual or is there an automatic mode too? Is there a guide to learn how to do the manual bomb runs? Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Auto bombing? Jump to a turret, and the auto pilot should take over to bomb.

No need to appologize!

If forced to pick one, A20C! The thing climbs so fast even with full bombload that early (41/42) era escort fighters have trouble keeping up with it! Empty it can outclimb Fw190A!

Next on my list are Ar234, G4M, Pe2,...

if you stay in the pilots seat do the bombs drop automaticly? also if I auto-bomb do I need to adjust the settings on the sight myself?

thanks again.

Well I always drop them manually. With a bit of practice you can sink a battleship with a direct hit from 7km altitude. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Manually calculating angle, checking speed, aiming for target etc. is very, very immersive and addictive. Do not try to avoid this part of the sim, you are gonna love it. Procedures are all described in the manual I posted.

Oh I plan to eventually. I just have limited time to play for the next few weeks so I just want to get a few bomb runs into to try it out. Just want to use the auto for now until I got time to learn the manual way. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I am afraid that even 'Auto' needs a lot of manual intervention.

This is the basic idea:-
Put the altitude and airspeed into the bombsight;
Move the bombsight angle upwards/forwards to place the crosshairs on the target
Press the 'Auto' key

The bombsight will now keep adjusting the bombsight angle to keep the target in the crosshairs until it is time to drop then will release all your bombs.

Sounds easy? Unfortunately you need to know the exact height that you are above the target but your altimeter is calibrated for your take off airfield. The second problem is that you need to know your exact 'True Airspeed' (TAS)but your instruments only tell you your 'Indicated Airspeed' (IAS) which is wrong as soon as you leave the ground because the air density will change with temperature & altitude http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You will either need to consult a table giving equivalent TAS at different altitudes for different each different IAS or use a program such as Bombsight Table that does the same thing when you tell it your altitude and IAS. Having done all this you will still need to be certain that you maintain a constant airspeed and altitude all the way to the release point.

Bombing manually only adds one more step ie you need to know what angle the bombsite should be set at for a certain Airspeed and Altitude so that when the crosshairs touch the target releasing the bombs will hit the target. Again you would do this by consulting a table. In fact it is not even really an extra step because your manual bombing table will give you the correct angle for a given altitude and Indicated Airspeed; there is no need to convert to True Airspeed. The advantage of the manual method is that you don't have to drop all your bombload on one target.

ahh. I see. thanks so much. I will have to give it a try. I printed of the manual too that tigertalon linked for me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Does every bomb site have the "auto" feature? I read that the PE-2 does not have that option. Also how does one find his altitude above target?

Once again thanks very much for your input!

If, by "auto" you mean "autopilot", of course you can turn on the autopilot in a single player mission, and everything will happen automatically. You won't have that option in a multiplay coop or dogfight, however.

As far as "auto" meaning the bombsight automatically triggers the bomb release, well, I know that the He-111 and the A-20C have that feature, and and I think the the B-25 and Ju-88 also. As Roblex explained, you still have to input your flight data into the bombsight and adjust it so the crosshair is on the target.

You are correct, that for the Pe-2, you have to push the button when the bead lines up with the caret.

Be prepared to do a lot of practicing. It takes a bit of organization to get to altitude, trim up, find target, set up the bombsight, etc.

The only way I know of to find the elevation of a target is to put yourself there in an aircraft and see what your speedbar reads for altitude. Then your altitude above target is your aircraft altitude above sea level, minus the target elevation.

I am a high-level bombing instructor. Catch me on Hyperlobby, and if I have time, I'll have you hitting from 10,000 feet in about 45 mins.

Or the PBJ(B-25)

Welcome! Always nice to see another bomber fan stop by. Questions welcome...

Intelligence reports if provided by the mission designer. Or become familiar with the maps and the various altitudes. I've been toying with the idea of making contour maps...hmm...wonder if anybody else has?

Also, I highly recommend Joe90s training video. Excellent tutorial.
