A question by someone who hasn't played in a while:

How does removal of outer MG151/20 cannons affect performance of particular Fw 190A variants ?

I remember there were some inconsistencies where such a removal would introduce additional drag due to bombrack, right ?

thanks

MG FF are outer wing mounted. It should make you roll faster, and provide better climb rate. With bomb/tank rack you can get different results, because it produces additional drag. It i possible that your machine without MG FFs and with bomb rack would, in the end, only roll a bit faster.

Yup, is what I figured. One correction though. Removal of outer cannons should not improve roll rate, only reduce roll inertia.

From Fw 190A-6 onwards, MG151/20 are outer wing mounted. With ammo, one should be about 120-140kg or so. MG FF are some 60-70kg with ammo, roughly. Remembering figures, don't have exact data here.

Yes, reducing roll inertia means you have higher roll acceleration when you start your roll, and consequently, higher deceleration when you're stopping your roll. This in fact should result in much more responsive plane for rolls.

Weights you've given were not inconsiderable for a WWII fighter.

Story of LAGG for example. By info I have, design team didn't include weight of aircraft paint, so this extra weight (40+(?) kilos) caused worse perfomance than expected. The end result was that it's pilots were speaking that LAGG is abreviation of Lacquered Guarrantied Grave.

Hmm, a late war Fw 190A weighs roughly 4000+kg. 250-300kg, so a 7% difference. Quite something regarding acceleration and climb performance. But firepower, hmmmm http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The FW-190A-4, A-5, and A-6 should have option to remove outter-cannons without getting bomb-rack IMO, but they don't. But not the A-8 and A-9 as bomb-rack was standard equipment.

Removing wing cannons should add some speed (10km/h or so) and maybe add slightly to climb and roll. In FB you can remove outter-cannons but this gives you ETC-501 bomb-rack which slows you down. Never really tested if there is any change in climb or roll since the speed hit instantly makes it senseless to remove outter-cannons. I'm not sure why this loadout option was even included, I see no purpose for it at all.

when i remove outer cannons and get that bombrack, it feels like i have bomb in my belly, plane really feel heavier that way. its just my opinion. Funny thing is that LA-5 series with fuel tanks on wings,, have anyone seen those flying and making turn fighting, it almost seems like those big tanks on wings doesnt decreace AC:s FM at all. same with russian planes which have rockets in wings, FM is almost the same, planes can EASILY keep turn fighting even with rockets intalled on wings. i find that bit wrong or should i say biased. same with rocket accuracy, short rails are enought to stabilise rocket as accurate as they are now?
