I'm consitering a WWII sim. I'm comming from lockon, so i'm completely new to this stuff.

What i'm confused about is this:
Is IL-2 a seporate game from Facific fighters or id Pacific fighters an add on to IL-2?

Thanks Alot! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You may be confused, but you're in luck! Roughly, the series went: IL2 > Aces Expansion > Pacific Fighters and now back to Sturmovik 1946. Between these upgrades, there were numerous patches and reinstalling the whole game was a mini-nightmare.

Enter the Sturmovik 1946 DVD. Everything this game has offered over the past 5 or so years can be installed with one easy click, plus ONE patch DL, and all for roughly $50 USBUX. The best part is, lots of old timers around here feel this is the best compromise of FM/DM the series has offered to date.

Welcome to the world of spinny things on your nose!

The original was
IL-2 Sturmovik -
now obsolete, and available only in combo packs
and maybe some single disk bargain bins.

That was followed by a complete rework and released as
IL-2 Forgotten Battles (FB) + patches
then came
Aces Expansion Pack (AEP) pay add-on + patches
then came
Pacific Fighters (PF) retail, installable alone, or as a merge with FB+AEP
then came
Pe-2 (Pe-2)as a pay add-on only to the merged FB+AEP+PF
then was suppose to come
Sturmoviks over Manchuria (SoM), then IL-2 1946 (1946)
These last two were combined and compiled into the new
IL-2 1946 DVD package, selling at the price for the two add-ons alone, which includes everything from Forgotten Battles thru IL-2 1946, also included (in most packs) a bonus DVD with content from upcoming BOB and a comprehensive manual.

IL 2 1946 = GET IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT
then get the latest patch 4.071m

In between some of these releases were a Gold Pack, a Complete Edition, and a combo pack of some kind I've never seen.

Sorry just kidding, the asnwer is suprisingly complicated! Just plain IL2 is the original in the series and is not directly compatible with Pacific fighters. IL2 Forgotten Battles (next in line from IL2) Ace Expansion pack and Pacific fighters can be combined and is Known as FB+AEP+PF, This with the free patches constitutes version 4.04 of the series and there is a DVD version of this available.

Had enough? Sorry were not done; there are three downloadable paid expansions PE2, Wings over Manchuria, and 1946. These are versions 4.05, 4.06 and 4.07 respectively. The upcoming final patch will be 4.08 and will be the end of the series (or so were told)

The silver lining? Yes there is a silver lining! Buy the DVD version of 1946 and it comes with all of the above and installs nice and easy like a single game and (Dumroll please) you get c300 aircraft, over 230 of them flyable and tons and tons of ground objects and maps and missions and us the somtimes wierd, always entertaining online community!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

If you're even half-interested in getting started with this series, just bite the bullet and get the 1946 DVD pictured at the top of this thread. It will save you a lot of hassle and money in the end.

Here is why:
1) Otherwise, you'll probably be tricked into buying the original IL-2 Sturmovik, which in retrospect is kind of like a beta version of the current series.
2) Forgotten Battles (part #1 of the series) is difficult to find by itself now, and I think it is out of production.
3) Ace Expansion Pack (part #2) is also difficult to find by itself and is probably out of production. You need FB to make AEP work.
4) Pacific Fighters (part #3) is relatively easy to find in stores, but you need FB and AEP installed first to 'merge' Pacific Fighters and be compatible with most online games.
5) Pe-2 Peshka (part #4) is only sold as a commercial download, and comes with a much disliked download manager called Boontybox. You need to have all of the first three parts of the series for Pe-2 to work.
6) Sturmoviks Over Manchuria (part #5) is not yet available in any form except the 1946 DVD. It may soon be available as a commerical download that requires the other four parts of the series in order to work.
7) 46 (part #6) is also only available on the 1946 DVD. If it becomes available as a download, you'll need the previous five parts of the series for it to work.

The 1946 DVD installs all of this in one shot. A small beta patch can be applied to bring the game up to the most current version of the series.

This is the anticipated end of the series so one purchase should take care of all your future IL-2 needs. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
