I loved the different sounds for each engine, u could now tell the planes by the engine noise they produce. Also the graphics are something that my computer can handle( i think) so i do not have to upgrade anything yet(good thing since i do not have the money right now).

Also the lighting effects are some of the best i have ever seen. The graphics on the planes are also of the best quality.

Pretty nice! Like the Sunset.

Eye candy is all well and good but there are many many other elements that have to be there to make it a worthy game. I am still hopeful that it will be good.

Oh My Goood! Did you guys see that? The propellers are thick, they are like real ones! Seems like they modelled the propellers in 3D and they are not changing to such an unrealistic flat plate like in IL-2. They even interact with the lightning! And the colors looked much more life-like in this great video, too. In IL-2 i just never get the feeling that i am flying in bright sunshine, its like on some photos.
Really looking forward to it!

I really hope there is a demo! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif When I starting playing IL-2 back in 2001 it inspired me to learn as much as I could about the era and aircraft. I always had a passion for aircraft but it was mostly for modern fight jets. I can see that that hunger for knowledge will be the same for the WW1 period which I admit I dont know a whole lot about when compared to the WW2 era. I cant wait!

Yes, it's a completely new engine.

The pic OC embedded was described as a 'target' piece of artwork - a photoshop of what they'd like to be able to achieve, not neccesairily what is achievable. A bit of fun at Christmas.

@old

I believe these to be in game textures. If you can get to the site and look at the development page and updates the give every week. You will be overjoyed with what these developers are doing! Sign up on their forums and tell the developers what you like! This will give them motivation and see that their work is going noticed by a large group of people!

No, i meant IL-2. Ok, in fact when the propeller becomes fast enough in IL-2, then the animation of the 3D-model is changed to three squares, which are set at an angle to imitate propeller blades. I know, all you see is that round blur in front of the cockpit, thats because of course not all of the square is visible, but only a circle in form of that most times slowly rotating blur.
Soooo what i meant was, if you didn't understand it, that in this KotS Promo video it is visible, that the propeller is still animated in full 3D and not changed to an ugly trade-off animation.
And if you feel the urge to reply to this post, because it has such an educating tone to it... well, dont try to educate me with false facts. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/crackwhip.gif

Yes I enjoyed the fly by of the cammel the 1st,2nd, and even 3rd time.. but after about the 10th fly by I was sitting there thinking to myself.. Yes.. I get it.. Fly by.. it works! Fly by in blue sky does not really pump my nads.. A take off from a aerodome would have been nice.. or a fly by over the front lines would have been nice.. or a fly by of 3 or more planes in formation would have been nice.. but a fly by of the same two planes 10+ times? I was good after 3 fly bys! They should have made the DL smaller and cut out the otther fly bys IMHO

Now don't get me wrong here.. I am not dinging them or the dev team! I welcome all new flight sims.. The part that bums me out is this video shows 'me' that they are no where near done! Thus we all have to wait longer for this sim than we expected.

heywooood

well - the point of all the flybys was to showcase the self-casting shadows and the metal gleaming vs the gleam effect on painted fabric surfaces in various light conditions...not to mention the beauty of their selected 3d aircraft models. (There are more flyables than what they showed in this one vid, that wasn't the point)

I was not disappointed or bored with it atall.

As updates go - it is far better than static screen shots at conveying the work they have done in the area of lighting and shadowing effects so far.

I wouldn't worry about the engine sounds in this vid or the lack of landscape in it...again - that wasn't the point.

A couple of days spent recording at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and they'd have all the real WWI engine sounds they'd ever need.

I hope they spend at least as much time on the actual game play as they seem to be doing on the visuals. Just make them detailed enough so you can identify what you're shooting at, and get on with the flight/damage models, the MMP and the campaign engines already! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

..... Oh, I know and love ORA. Been there many times. Back in the old RB3D days, when the Red Baron Forum was in full cry on Delphi, I was involved in organizing an annual Red Baron gathering at ORA for several years. Great times / great people. We had RB simmers coming from as far away as Louisiana and Ohio for a weekend event.

The WWSpinDry I know was/is an enthusiastic RB simmer (later a very gifted model builder for CFS) who was living in Rome NY. I met him face to face at the first RB day at ORA/Rhinebeck.
He was nice enough to actually invite us to his wedding, which we attended. Then we kind of lost touch over the intervening years.

BTW, the "WW" part of his handle = WingWalkers, which was a big on-line squadron on RB MMP.

I can't imagine that they would neglect to model the 'blip' throttle on the Camel (and other similar planes). It's a most basic feature of control on those planes and, frankly they'd be laughed off the scene if they tried to fit a variable speed throttle.

I'm not so sure that the blipping would be used in the circumstances shown in the promo vid. As a demo of textures it looked just fine to me. It may be alarming to think about progress and release dates, but I don't think that should detract from the enjoyment of some seriously good eye-candy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Camel controls can be a muddy thing, alas. Someone once showed me system diagrams that looked original and which clearly showed a throttle lever. For my part, I trust the ORA guys, whose Camel has an original engine. The system it uses selects how many cylinders actually fire for one revolution of the engine; the fewer cylinders fire, the slower the actual RPM of the rotation. It's much more complex than a simple blip switch, and the pilot used it for very exacting approach control when he landed. No throttle lever there!

Greetings, this thread has dragged me out of the interweb to post.

+1, CANT WAIT for it.
Fall of 2007 cant come soon enough. I may well wait and NOT buy 1946.
BooRah!
Hope for better engine sounds, but honestly, a crappy video cant really do justice to a quality set of headphones and the game engine, eh?
regards
