I got a minor dealema, its 1941 in my second career, im in a VIIC based at Lorient - with a highly decorated crew.

Now, its getting to the point where im either gonna stay put and Upgrade to an IXC with its long range and torp load to patrol the caribiean - where i can enjoy many a tanker killing spree.

OR

Transfer to the italian base and patrol the Mediteranian, which means staying in a VIIC (IX boats are not avaliable or practical here) Ive heard there are more capital warships / taskforce in the med and you see alot of action there.

But I will miss all the massive merchant convoys and tonnage of the atlantic.....

what should i do http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

oh and ther is NO way i will make a two way trip though the GIbralar straits every other patrol!!!!(shudder!)

Dude, trust me. Get the IXC and hit the Caribbean. I just had the same dilemma last night as a matter of fact. I chose the IXC in a moment of hesitation.....and I won't look back. First off, the boat is huge, givign you a feeling of power. I just cannot describe what it's like being so used to a VII then upgrading to the IXC. And my god;.... that torpedo load while chillin in the Caribbean shootin T3's... nothin like it! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

stick with your type IID or go back to it and take the med. if u ask me, much more fun.. its challenging to make the most out of the limited torpedoes u have and no deck gun, but she has faster dives and a smaller cross section for detection.

Me no like Type II, feels like its out of date even for 1939, somehow....lol its nippy and compact but armed with measly 5 torps and peashooter... what that gonna do in 1942 onwards??

well, thats the challenge isn't it? by that time, i'll have an elite crew, plus i found out the type two with the battery upgrade is perfect for sneaking into harbors, seems i have better luck avoiding the nets and the the 5 torpedoes are plenty for taking care of most of the ships in harbor http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif i simply get more enjoyment out of making the most from what little i've got http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
but its just my opinion.

...and probably allows you to finish a patrol inside of 2 hours I imagine. Hmmmm... that alone has some appeal. I get glued to the PC for 4-5 hrs in the VIIC as it is. I know, I know... save game.

JU88, go for the Type IX/B. You'll love the torpedo loadout plus the deck and flak guns withthe upgrade. You don't have to go on those long patrols. Just use up all your torps and radio BdU, they have you RTB.

I'm in my 24 patrol (May 7,44) and and just encountered a convoy with no warning(May 18th) in DH13 and 16 on the way to the Carribean...ED91. I've been attacked by a Frigate, Hunt 3 DD, Corvette, and a couple of others I didn't get a chance to identify... too far off. Only damaged a C2 but sank a Small Merch. PLUS I've been attacked by air by a group of P38s, Sunderlands, and B24s in the DH block. Now I have no flak guns http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif but had to repair the radio, radar receiver, forward deck plate. Then got lucky and sank a C3 and Sm. Merch. while being attacked again by air(B24s). Alot of run and hide but still going strong so far. Only 10 out of 21 torpedos left and the crew needs rest. Once out of the Air Srtike zone they get a days rest and we're heading towards home. We'll divert to the BE57 and 58 areas to use up what torpedos we have left.

This is awesome but I'm glad it's only a simulation.

I went ahead and upgraded to the XXI. It does have some bugs .. ex. radar is destroyed every time you start a mission. That being said I still love the boat. I treat it as that eveything built in this world has problems, and loseing radar is one I that I can live with. I rarely encounter planes and when I do my flack gunners are very good and I have rarely taken a hit and I almost always down at least one of the two waves coming at me. I am running 1.4b and the aircraft have become more accurate but still not enough to scare me. BTW I play at 82%, I do let my WO do all calcs and after 45 patrols, I'm in early 45, I am growing to love this boat and her speed!! Any ways why have a sub with a deck gun if you can only use it once every 2 to 3 patrols ... if you are lucky.

I am having a severe case of luck then .. weather has been perfect for a month now .. so dont underestimate the power of a deck gun (1940) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Ive got the solution. I will contiue my carreer in the atlantic in the IXC. Then I will start a new career with the 29th as my starting flotilla in 41/42.

Good choice, the IX is a beaut and very rewarding, gr8 to have a IX career going alongside a VII. Whatever the mood, just jump in the right boat. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Silly me though, I started my 2nd VII career in 1940 and still have a couple of months to serve before transferring to the Med. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif
