Hi, Getting a new GPU soon and retiring my 9800XT.
I want to get NVidia 6800 ULTRA but there is a substantial price difference between the ULTRA and the GT.
From what I could find on the net, the performance difference is negligable, so is it worth the price difference.
Anyone got these cards have any comment.
Thx

For I... I have taken the card less Ultra, and that has made all the difference.

Hehe. I buy the lower price models in the line. With the FX line I bought the FX5900 "XT" which is lower than the non-U card. Most of the speed, much more reasonable price. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I don't have a new 6800 or X800 yet, but no doubt I'll buy the non-ultra version. My small budget likes them better. If you've got money to spare, buy what ever has the biggest "cool factor" to you. Makes it more fun, and you'll really enjoy it more.

I recently bought a Leadtek 6800GT, and it's currently @ 430MHz/1.165GHz

There is a registry tweak to open up hidden options, and it OCed comfortably to 425/1.14 without breaking a sweat, using the "Detect Optimal Frequencies" button.

LOL @ Owlsphone
Yup that one went right between bat and pad hehe

Yup my m8's are telling me similar things, that the ultra is not worth the extra cash, if your like me that hasn't won the lottery yet. Fps/$ it doesnt add up.
Kewl factor, sure would be nice.
I can get plenty of GT's here, just stock of Ultra's is scarce. The way my investigation is going so far, settling for a GT might just be the right way to go, cheaper to = more beer money.

FWIW I replaced my 9800XT with 6800GT. I O/C my Gt to 400mhz Ultra speed and got a nice boost in fps - could actually use PERFECT WATER=3 w/o much frame rate hit. Unfortunately, I get the occasional graphical error/glitch running OC so I backed it back down to 370mhz. There was a big difference between GT running default compared to O/C ultra speed at least for me. I wish I could run at 400mhz but can't. So if I had to do it over again I would probably get the Ultra. If you want to risk getting a GT and O/C w/o problems though that would probably save you some $$$.

However, with that said - since I running at "excellent setting" anyways cause I can't O/C my card without errors - I probably would have just kept my 9800XT which was fine at excellent. If I were you just keep the 9800XT and save the $$$ rather than get a GT. IMHO.

I had both now have the ultra. Do it all over again I get the GT. At the time the difference was $100. At default the diffence was 10% in FPS. Not worth the $100 extra plus Ultra you need a extra power connector. Comes down if you want to spend $100 dollars more for a few extra FPS in Game.

What I should have said is that playing at PERFECT with WATER=3 I can get playable fps with my GT O/C but not at the default 350mhz. Yeah I can play PERFECT WATER=1 or 2 on the GT default and it's not bad. I would say if you play online you can probably get decent fps with WATER=3 but some of the single player missions with lots of AI and ships will eat your fps on PERFECT\WATER=3. I would have stuck with the 9800XT because I believe that the current X800\6800 still isn't powerful enough to justify the cost-at least to me it isn't.

But, I'm on an LCD 17" that can't do 1600X1200. Now that I know you want that resolution you probably would be better off getting an X800 or 6800 over your 9800XT cause it will definitley be faster at high resolutions like that. But at low resolution like I'm running there little difference between my 9800XT and 6800GT. Sure me 6800GT can show the nice water, but at unplayable fps - so what's the point for me. I should have saved the $400 for the next generation cards or for a new computer upgrade later on. just my 2 cents - but yeah, you'll be better off upgrading cause you want to run at 1600X1200.

If you havent already head over to the techy forum here and fill in the sticky post regarding the issue, as well as submit to Ati through the driver feedback program.

The only thing stopping me at the mo from getting in my car and drving down the road to pick up and X800XT PE is this bug.
Hence why Im trying to source and Ultra instead.

EDIT: btw I reverted to 4.10 drivers and havent had the issue since, been running it for about a week. Its worth a try m8, although it makes the water look all dark and oily on water1, water 2 looks ok.
