Charlie Bond's diary
on p. 154 he sees a bunch of P-43s in Karachi. He talks the AF guys into checking him out in it. "It is a nice little plane. Climbs like a scared angel and easily outruns the P-40E, particularly at higher altitudes, since it has a turbosupercharger." Oh, I see. He has a problem with the Kittyhawk he is ferrying to China, so he is going to take the P-43 instead. He has a hard time starting it next day, April 18, then the engine quit because he forgot to switch tanks.

Then he is put in charge of a bunch of 43s. One Chinese pilot is grounded because of a fuel leak. "He had fallen in love with the plane, and it was like taking candy from a baby." They are diverted to Loiwing that day, April 21. "The pilots were enthralled with the looks of the P-43.... When we took off for Kunming I demonstrated its climb capability compared to the P-40E. I was off the ground in half the distance." At Kunming, "everyone wanted to fly the P-43."

some of these were actually used in combat by Chenaullts pilots!
