"Helen" by any other name would smell as sweet.

I really would like to fly in this one. But if TD make the Ki-21 flyable I will be already happy enough.

Well you would do well to google il2 mods if youd like a Ki21...great plane I remember flying one at over 5000m alt and a P39D1 trying to chase me ...I think he gave up round about 9km

Yes, Sally as modelled in IL-2 1946 is a very good altitude performer and according to various sources this was also the case in reality. Francillon for example quotes max. speed of Ki-21-II (the 1500hp Ha-101 euqipped version) as 486kph at 4.720m (302mph at 15.485ft) which is pretty impressive for a plane of this class and era. It was adored by crews and mechanics and preferred over the intended replacement in form of Nakajima Ki-49 Donryu pictured above.

It's a franken plane?

I still have to download the mods, but I want to fly the Ki-21 with it's original cockpit. I don't see much fun otherwise. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Who knows... maybe one day? It'd be nice to have another Japanese bomber at some point.

Yeah. And the problem is the Ki-21 would not be simply "another Japanese bomber", but a bomber for the IJA, which we don't have any.

The Ki-21 exists as an AI in the stock game. Modders merely inserted the Betty cockpit.

The IJA do indeed need more (any) attack and bombing aircraft.

Its a question whether any good photograps about Ki-21 interior exist today. I've checked Monogram Japanese Aircraft Interiors 1940-45 and it seems the material on the subject is rather scarce.

That's in my oppinion the crucial point (FM/DM issues are in this context another point!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif ) on the whole issue concerning modded planes: to which degree do those cockpits represent actually the (historical-documented?) 'real-world' cockpits of that specifical era? That is one important reason why I personally don't like those franken-planes! They simply don't give the right degree of immersion!

The other alternative (i.e. arcade-game style) would be cartoonish-games, not (more or less) contemporary WWII flight simulators! (one problematic proposition: just compare the details of the cockpit of the Zero/A6m in 'Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 2' to 'IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946'!)

Probably, it will take many years, until SOW will cover the Asia-Pacific!
Keep that in mind!
IL-2 1946 will probably not die all too soon, at least not suddenly in a couple of months!

Cheers!

I have a Japanese Maru Mechanic book about the Ki-21, and there's a lot of material in it, incluing a beautiful drawing of the cockpit with the color described by a veteran if I'm not wrong.

Guys like Mikesh and other Western authors do a good job but most of them have the "war trophy" philosophy regarding Japanese aircraft. Many things have to be found in Japan itself. I have some Japanese books (I don't speak Japanese yet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif), and there's just an absurd of photos I never saw in Western publications, and such photos are not copyrighted.

And going further on this, sometimes I see people in the modelling forums saying that "there's no evidence about the interior color of this plane". Actually this is not enterly truth, as the Maru Mechanic have it's color information based on verbal description by pilots, ground personal and factory workers. We really don't have any conclusive evidence, still we have the words of such people. Again the question of how much information manage to reach the West (or the Westerns wanted to reach).

I don't know if there's sufficient material to modelate the Ki-21 even in Japan itself but only this book I have surely is already enough to modelate a great part of the aircraft. I already offered this and other materials about Japanese aircraft to TD.
