View Full Version : Sharkmouth!

Something that I was fascinated with as a child.

Was the perception that the P-40 was a mean plane that lended itself well to having a "Sharkmouth" painted on it.

Has anyone got a favourite plane that they use that has this type of adornment.

Having read many instances of both Allied and Axis aircraft, having been decorated in such a manner.
Does anyone have pics of "Unusual" real subjects?

Anything considered!

Ha! I was going to start more or less the same thread a couple of weeks ago http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Admittedly it doesn't really work but unusual nonetheless:

I have a book that shows a stateside B-24 with a sharkmouth scheme.

Years ago somebody posted a picture of an early war Soviet bomber with crocodile teeth. I wish I could find that now, I remember it looked especially mean. The picture's file name had "krokodile" in the title.

The P-40 is the one best suited though. As far as I know it's the only one with an ample chin radiator combined with a long nose.

Yes, I remember that one, even the name stuck - Krokodil:

The Sharkmouth is cool. I also lolled heavily when I saw the picture of Stalin in a Finnish P-36 - now that was sarcasm.

Some observsations;

The P-39 looks a bit drunk and worried.

The Hellcat looks lascivious, like Sid James has just seen some chick's towel fall down.

The Focke-Wulf looks a bit surprised and not terribly fearsome, like a Hammerhead.

The Stuka looks quite happy.

The Whirly looks like it's concentrating.

The Spit and the Mustang look genuinely angry.

(ignoring the P-40's whcih are, of course, the reference.)

Ever sence I read "God is my Co-Pilot" as a young boy I've had a soft spot for the P-40, then Oleg gave me the chance to fly one and I've been in turmoil ever since. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

There are a couple or three Pics in this thread that were totally unknown to me. And I still get a great feeling when I see new pics of the subject in question.(Whirlwind? Whoah! And the Krocodil. Negative. It is clearly visible and beyond any doubt that it was the prop of the plane the Lavochkin had just eaten http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Just note the number of red stars and the Guardian ensignia, and bow down.

HAW! Excellent.

The first well-known WWII sharkmouths were the 110s of II/ZG76. They adopted the marking in early 1940. 112 Squadron, RAF, flying U.S. made Tomahawks in North Africa, adopted the idea from II/ZG76, and the Flying Tigers adopted their variant from 112 Squadron in late 1941.

Its not exactly what you where talking about...but when I was a little kid I remember seeing pictures of both the P-40 (with shark face) and the "Stuka" and thinking that they both looked like "really mean and deadly" airplanes... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm sure I've also seen a Sharkmouth motif on a bullnose nightfighter, possibly in one of the 2nd TAF books.

Yea, that`s pretty much it. Most other planes don`t give the surface needed for a good depiction of the maw.

Anyway, some amazingly interesting attempts at shark mouths here. Some, I admit don`t even look aggressive at all. Also, seeing nearly every nationality use it (where some weren`t supposed to) makes me feel better. As I tend to stick stuff on the side of my Spitfire....

The P-40 wears a shark mouth like no other plane can. Thanks for posting all of the great pics fellas.
