The 20mm cannon located in the tail of the Betty was a great defensive weapon.

Oh yeah, the "totally ready Betty, just not enough space on the cd" enough space on the flyables list though! Are we actually gonna get it come 4.0?

no, it was not. because of its very slow firing rate

I wouldnt dismiss it that quickly, i have never seen any statistics of losses to Betty reargunners. And i doubt it even exists, mostly you will read accounts of how pilots shot down bombers...not how they got shot down by the reargunners (for obvious reasons).

On the other hand Mk108 wasnt practical to dogfight with in reality either. But you can bet 99,99% of all G6 pilots online will use it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

there are always two sides on a coin:
the reality and the game.............

See? they toned down the muzzle flashes in PF too much. I think the big muzzle flashes where more realistic http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

That Betty picture sure looks "fishy" to me.

no, it was not. because of its very slow firing rate

Even with a slow firing rate it discourages planes from coming in slow on the 6 (where they have a good chance of hitting the engines from) forcing them into other attack strategies that are harder for the Betty gunners to hit, but also hit from.

It looks like it has been retouched. It doesn't mean it is fake or the muzzle flash etc is fake. Retouching to make photos clearer was pretty common in the 1930s-50s as increasing contrast and sharpness for publication via photoshop was still just a dream.

Alot of USMC and USN pilots reported being wary of the G4M's stinger; unless one killed the gunner quickly, it could be extremely dangerous for a P-40 or F4F to sit back on the dead 6 of a Betty. The Betty's repuation for extreme vulnerability came about due to its unarmored fuel tanks and the relative ease with which a concentrated burst of 4 or 6 .50cals could blow off an engine or flame a wing root. People should also remember that high side and beam attacks and deflection shooting were taugh exhaustively to USN and USMC pilots. Front line Navy and Marine flyers in 1942 were, as a group, the most skilled deflection shooters in the world. If a fighter is able to shoot accurately during a high side run, the G4Ms tail gun is rendered useless as a defense weapon.

On the other side of the coin, there were numerous occasions in 1942-1944 where US pilots reported running into G4Ms that, though appearind otherwise undamaged, did not seem to have their tail stingers manned.

which does not make sense, as you might think that if you were going to man any gun on an aircraft, you would:

a) man the tail gun

and

b) the strongest weapon you had

intruiging.
