4. You have come to the definitive conclusion that this game all boils down to Situational Awareness and Gunnery...and you excel at both.

5. You are just as deadly and comfortable at any settings.

6. At any point in a dogfight, you know almost exactly where each bogey is and almost exactly how much time you have to maneuver before one can get guns on you.

7. You know when to Turn and Burn and when to Energy fight or B and Z.

8. You know exactly which planes out turn yours and which planes can be out run, regardless of pilot skill.

9. You are on a squad's server waxing their best and a couple of them come back under aliases on RW and you still wax them.

10. You know a pilot's skills after the first encounter.

11. You can spot a Speed Gear time space continuum air braker a mile away.

12. You'd rather throw your PC in the garbage than ever cheat.

13. You can out fly 75% of the LA7 flyers in a P39, 109-G2 or a 109-K4.

14. You can count on one hand how many times you've been shot down during a 1 vs 1 engagement over the past three months.

The last week I have been pwning in my butcherbird. Making incredible shots at incredible ranges. Beating the odds, and even turning hte blue side into a team on one server (well, we came together and kicked major arse). Then for kicks to fly with buds you go back to the 109 and all must be re-learnt...never go back once you get your niche in the Fw, its like sand in the palm of your hand that can go with the breeze. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Zen...you need to show up on the TX server more often (and using the maps I sent you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) so we can go duo on the FW190D-9.

I say its a sign of a FB ace because most people seem to have an aversion for the FW190D-9. I think people think its a lesser armed version of their A-9 and it doesn't have MK108 option (which I dislike anyways) so they ignore it. But thats ok...I love the thing. Can't wait for the Tempest (as I keep saying) because the two will be very closely matched.

People use the MK108 as a crutch imho. The Dora's guns are more than enough to get the job done and you can even handle bombers with it, though it is more risky obviously. The trick with the Dora is to fire accurately from close range, just as it is with any plane.

Besides being my favorite plane, one of the main reasons I fly the Dora is because it requires itself to be well flown and therein lies the satisfaction. As the least well armed version of the series, you can't attribute success to anything other than knowing how to use it effectively. You have no massive MG spray, no big guns (hell, not even 4 guns like the A5), no advantage in ROF, no advantage in range or hitting power. You simply must put the rounds on target with precision.

To me personally, the Dora represents the skill angle of the game like nothing else does...it doesn't have dominance in any area except roll rate and is hampered like all FW by the atrocious forward view (and not just the gunsight view, but those monolithic canopy frames and that 60's era cadillac pimp oversized dashboard). All I'd need is some fuzzy dice modelled and I'd be in heaven.

The plane is not the best turner in the game, it's not the best climber, is not the fastest accelerating, doesn't have the heaviest firepower, doesn't have the best E retention, visibility or top speed even. But the magic of the plane is that it has at least one attribute better against allmost anything and the trick becomes to force the enemy to fight your game so you can use that single attribute to win.

Lot of talk about LA series being overmodelled, Yak's too and G2/K4. Lots of talk about what the hardest plane to fly is, what is the best plane in the game or the worst. To me it's very simple...the Dora is the best hands down because of it's complexity. The performance is there without a doubt, but you must coax it out, it's not a point and shoot airplane or one armed with nuclear cannons. It is capable of defeating any plane in the game but unlike many other kinds, it requires a much broader skillset to compete against them all. I can't think of another plane in the game that is as versatile personally...it's all in there, but you have to know how to unlock it. I'd say the Dora is in the top 80-90% of performance range, but doesn't have a decisive edge in anything. It has enough ooomph to be competitive, but nothing is over the top.

Lately I'm on BM357 most of the time because to me that is where the Dora shines. It is by far the most challenging environment for it, everything depends on SA and proper tactics. With the Dora, you have very little to fall back on when things get tight and it can't simply turn it's way out of danger. Everything is about setting up the attack prior to engagement or getting out of a jam if bounced by surprise.

I'll swing by the TX-OC3 for sure, I definately had fun that night we winged together, we made a pretty good combination despite lack of comms. If you get in the mood, come on over to BM357, Hunde flies there as well as some other of the FW forum regulars. That is a very cool thing btw, to meet so many 'in person' so to speak.

The D9 is such a challenge. You fly against aircraft that are superior in every way with a moderately lightly armed aircraft. The 190A series at least has enough guns to cripple in one pass. Thats the main draw for me. Then, the Ta-152 will have Mk108 and Mg151/20 iirc. That'll be a good choice also. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Great post Zen. My time flying is not 70% P-51 and 30% Dora, only because the Pony caters to my style more. I feel the same way you do about the dora, and i always feel that way about the pony (only when it comes to guns though, and dmg sometimes). The Pony is "easier" to fly, but if you dont shoot the .50cal just right, all you see is little parts lfying off as you slowly pick away at something. But its a great feeling to get it just right and saw the wing and tail off a 109 simultaneously. Dont worry, i haven't completly given up on the Dora yet http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

"People use the MK108 as a crutch imho."

Zen, understand one thing though in this perspective - Do the most damage possible in the window allowed.

Note that the planes that use the MK108 are pretty much cannon fodder for the most part if they miss; they become the hunted almost every time.

Man, I love the Dora, but when I see too many B-17's in the air, I go with the A9 or a K4, and sometimes even add 108 pds to the K4 for extra insurance :-)

Yes, I've hit the B-17 bombload with a lucky shot from even a Ki a few times, but whe I'm not counting on luck, I take an A9 or K4 with MK108!

As for the original poster; Blah - whatever dude.

Zen has a true love for the Dora, and his posts reflect it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I have a feeling that a younger, hotter version with a nice rack is going sweep him off his feet shortly. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif When I'm not flying the Jug, the Dora has become one of my main rides when flying Axis. That's mostly due to his well informed, well spoken, experienced posts on flying the Dora, as he demonstrates above. I had mostly dismissed the Dora, like many others. But after reading some of Zen's posts, and getting some more stick time, it becomes quite apparent that this a/c lends itself very well to energy fighting. It's one of the best fighters around for this. Thanks Zen, for reintroducing me (and hopefully some others). http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The D9 is nice but I prefer the A and F models. For fighter killing I normally take a straight A9 (no MK108's). The A9 is less agile and doesn't dive as fast but its 4x20mm's make up for it. It also has prettier skins availible for it and it looks more manly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif.

BTW, I hate using MK108's against fighters, they are too inaccurate and shake the plane all over the place. Using MK108's is a pure gamble as well. You are hoping your sideways shooting shell will hit. If it does you score a kill, if it doesn't then you wasted the last 5 minutes you spent setting up that attack. The 20mm MG151 yields far more reliable results. Or atleast it does for me.

2) An ace stays focused - he does not give up before he hits the ground.

3) An ace is patient but agressive, arrogant but observing.

4) I could never be one...

Slick, your ego is a bit inflated.

And you are not even close to being the best la7 pilot.

Go find csl_cocour on HL. Try a dogfight with la7's against him. Then watched as he kills you every time. Then let him take a 109 and still beat you in a turning fight.

He's an excellent pilot and the best thing about him is he doesn't have a huge obnoxious ego.

I see that a lot online. I love the 109, but will not fly the late versions unless forced to because I hate the MK108. Only time I will strap one on is if I am against a bunch of Jugs or B17s. For everything else, the mg151 is plenty.

Not all Aces fly the same in FB. Some don't like to be shot down too much. Some need to always be at an advantage before engaging. Some don't like an equal engagement at all.

The Top Aces accept all challenges and can turn just about any situation to their advantage and usually do by letting the bogey commit to a tactic and then using it against him.

However, to answer your question, I'm no different than any of the other Top Aces that fly FB. It's just that some of us prefer to prove their prowess on a larger scale than others.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Actually, having bested him on a few occasions as well as that other =LA7= squad out there, I'd love to see how much he has improved since last we met. It had to be almost 6 months ago, but he was certainly well-skilled, well-mannered and provides my favorite challenge, La7 vs LA7.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The funny part is that my first post describes the attributes I've astutely observed about the true aces in FB. For those that take everything they read on the internet seriously, I set the hook by not mentioning me in it and let some of the large-mouth bass take the rubber frog.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Just as a point of reference though, Zen met me on UBI after he had posted in one of my LA7 threads, that he would love to stop by sometime.

On that UBI server that day, we had a few tussles and after he tried a few different planes, I made reference in the chat to the series being just like this and he laughed in acknowledgement that he knew I was SlickStick flying in one of my favorite aliases, GJZ3_JayZack.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

However, the best part about my skills, is that I'll tell you what I'm going to do to you in a match and then I do it. And although I like to play the "game" on the forums, I am a gracious host and when a guest comes onto my server, I treat him with the same respect and honor as he shows.

Not to worry all you Top Ace challengers, the Lavochkin Performance Series is alive and well and will be on Hyperlobby this Friday night from about 7:00PM EST until whenever and later this weekend. I always make sure to overlap PST prime time to catch a few of my favorite targets.

The only problem lately is that I run out of opponents too quickly and if I go more than 1/2 hour on a 1 vs 1 server without a challenger, I assume I've beaten all the aces who wish to put their rep on the line for that night and go fly elsewhere.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Trust me, my friend. I do not lie. I use the internet the opposite way of most. I actually use it to be exactly me. No hiding behind a persona. No trolling in other names. None of that weaker-minded internet stuff for me. Although, I do love to practice in different names, you'll always find SlickStick running the LPS and no one else.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I like my woman and my humor sophisticated. I like to make people think. I enjoy the witty banter of some of the truly savvy people around here, while seeing through the thinly-veiled BS of 80% of the others.

I love it when other people make challenges for someone else, but he's a great pilot and I'm looking forward to meeting him 1 vs 1. Let's hope he's game.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just an FYI for all. My server is extremely tight in MAX LAG and speed checking. Don't even bother joining if you're not an honest Ace. Because if I detect the burst of slowing or speeding associated with that infamous program, I develop contempt for that person.

Then, I just have to hunt them relentlessly for a few weeks after, proving to all that they are cheating, while I show all on the server exactly what the visual aspects of the cheat is and let them witness it first hand.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Why would a real Ace have such a need to prove himself as one . Everyone knows who the Aces are, their reputation precedes them within this community.
I have a list of pilots that I try not to engage as I will always loose. (Though this list is getting smaller)

Aces are named by other people, saying you are one, automatically disqualifies you from the title.

BTW, "acedom" only counts when you shoot down 5 or more real aircraft, and the kills are confirmed by witnesses or remains of the kill have been found and registered.

being good in FB is one thing, being an ace is a whole different animal..

Don't agree on the MK-108 issue I'm afraid. Given the choice I would take a G6/AS so I can use the MG151.

2 Good reasons:
It's way more accurate than the 108
More rounds (120 vs 60+)

Against fighters the MG151/20 is effective enough IMHO. If I take the 190 A-9 for example I don't need to take the MK-108 as the 4x20mm MG151/20 are plenty. Just IMHO, but what do I know - I'm just a BF fanboy http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I flew with SlickStick a few times back in the day on the Ubi servers just for fun. He's not a bad pilot.

But then again, they were severs that you could dominate flying an IL-2 just for big laughs - go figure http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

You know you are an ace when your kill ratio exceeds 25:1 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Coming from you, UnKle, I'll take that as a compliment.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I actually saw you for the first time in a long time a couple of days ago on UBI on the WarClouds server. I snuck a quick one in on your FW, but had to go after because the kids were raising holy hell.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I used to sit in F2 mode watching you mow down fighters with that IL2 and laughing my arse off! Ah, those were the days. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Loco, let's not confuse real life with virtual reality, shall we? The title is about Forgotten Battles Aces.

I wouldn't even attempt to disrespect the great Aces that fought for their country in past wars by implying anything else.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That was fun - the bad old days when you could trim an IL-2 up to whatever you liked and raise hell.

I used to prefer the Series 1st IL-2 with the 16 RS-82 rockets and go Fighter Plinking. No rear gunner shouting at me and many WTF? comments as Yak-3 pilots got mowed by an IL-2.

Mwahahahahaha http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Those were some fast trimming times in those days, lol. I'd just sit and drink my beer LMAO at all the Yak and LA pilots crying in the chat about getting molested by your IL2. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
