i'll buy it for sure (if it'll run on my current pc) regardless of the campaign mode...if it is as bad as it has the potentail to be than it will at least provide a huge source of excellent screen backgrounds for modding SH2...so as i really don't think the consumer can be held responsible for the decisions of game companys and equally shouldnt be held to ransom by nor exploited by said bunch of hombres...(aint we just like a milchKow?) then i voted yes..

My vote is 'Yes, but only when it reaches the bargain bin'.
I would add that I'd buy when folks like CB and other modders from Subsim.com will patch SH3 up to standards which I share. I would also check out sound files.

I was going to vote BBin, but then I stopped, read a couple E3 impressions, and thought about it some more.

I've since voted Yes.

Clearly the level of detail is incredible. SH3 has atmosphere and immersive environments that, from what I can see, are of amazing quality.

It seems to me the devs are really making a true Silent Huntersequel. Everything I've read suggests the campaign is like the original. As long as the missions themselves are not canned, I'm happy.

An editor is included and it is said to be mod friendly. We can make our own missions, but can we import them into the campaign? Better yet, can we make our own campaigns?

I'm assuming excellent AI and physics, but then I'm also gaining more confidence that the dev team is going to deliver on one helluva sim.

I voted no, but I'd like to qualify that. Unlike some, I don't mind the idea of automatic transport to the patrol area, with random encounters along the way. I say this since I usually use hight time compression to get there anyway. On the other hand, in AOD I always stop, look outside at the weather and make a radio report at the same time every day.

What scares me is the "3-possibilities-branching-campaign idea". I would rather see the destinations randomized, and the encounters randomized as well. AOD may not have been completely realistic, but nothing since has given me the same feel (well, SHI comes close), and in a sim like this feel is everything, at least to me.

Like I said over at the subsim forum; I'll sit on the fence until i buy/try it. After all, you really dont know how a woman "feels" until you get her clothes off. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I've been away for a bit so forgive me if anything I have to say has already been covered.

So the campaign has been revealed as some sort of scripted branching thinngy I take it. Hmm. my first thought is probably the same as most of you. Why, after whatvis now amounting to YEARS of peole asking for a proper AOD campaign have they done this? The obvious answer is that they are not overly interested in the people who would continue to support the product over the evolution of the series. In fact, they seem more and more to be catering for the shoot and squirt crowd who, traditionally have about as much interest in Sub sims as I do in First person shooters.

Right, had to get that off my chest, here's my point. What most of us are looking for is something with more than a nod to 'realism.' a Branching campaign of scripted missions is idiotic. It implies, strongly, that the majority of them will be objective based - in real life they could be described as 'special missions.'

What I would like to know is this: exactly what proportion of U-boots spent the war on bloody special missions as opposed to standard anti-shipping patrols?

Second point: Do they really think that mixing up the order of the scripted missions will aid replayability one iota unless there are THOUSANDS of them?

Third point. I must be a freak but i kinda LIKE controlling the boat from port to the patrol area and back again. I have heard people saying that the method they have plumped for is cool because SH1 did it. I would say this; How old is SH1 and do they not think that, in this day and age, we deserve a BIT more? But then, your basic arcade gamer might find this boring and we can't possibly have that, can we?

All the nice pictures and moving crew man in the world won't help this game if the basics are screwed. I might well be over reacting but the alarm bells have been ringing for a little while now and have just been replaced by a full on Klaxxon.

Yep! this is exactly how I feel about this....... man this game could be ugly on the inside.

A game that looks this good can not be missed, even if there is no dynamic system in place.

Hey, I love good looks.

As a matter of fact, if you're looking for something truly photorealistic and don't worry about minor details such as gameplay, "Das Boot" is set to come out as a full, uncut, 5 hour version on DVD June 1st.

I guarantee you that you won't find better pictures of U-Boat combat anywhere and hey, who cares if you've seen the same scene over and over again? What really matters here is how it looks, right? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The gameplay looks fine ,they are just cutting out the needless boredom, and the missions will be random and varied so.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

one good thing yu have to say is that the level of detailing on the sub interior models is way beyond the normal level for simulations (even flightsims dont usually go this far except on add on 3rd party models) so out side of the campaign they have set the bar for simulation modeling..which will have a knock on effect on other sims..but 2mb of dynamic campaign engine wouldnt have killed them..(if AOTD can hold a fully dynamic campaign engine in it's miniscule bowels then it can only be around 2mb les than some screen shots) after all the campagin engine is just pushing dots on the map around no graphics involved at all..just tells thing A to go to place B and so on..

and round we go again...perhaps if they just told us why??? seems evry sim site with a new version on the cards is going thru the same thing....why no dynamic campaign.....

YES WHY????

there is a reason.....and we'd all like to know what that is from the horses mouth...it's getting monotonous going thru this for every new simulation released....WHY no dynamic campaign.....it sold copies 5 years ago it will sell copies now....did some one copyright the concept or something???? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

some times it just wise to accept that there's no point trying to re-invent the wheel...dynamic campaigns are the best it gets for simulated war...stop arsing around and get on with it...

I agree fully with you CB, the "why" from someone with responsibilty would really help a lot because to the ordinary gamer/simfan such as I regard myself it makes absolutely no sense at all to skip the random/dynamic CG concept. I played Silent Service on a C64 with a Datasett and even that game got more depth than SH1 & 2...

I always hear that arguement about stunning graphics which make up for the rest - I wont and cant deny that they are truly stunning and amazing as anything I ever seen so far but they do not make game a ... game.
For example the interior pictures/scenes are very nice to look at but who will play the game from that screen?
I cant tell for sure of course unless and if I played this thing but my expierence would guess I will either watch the map, be on the bridge or in the sonar room for 80-90% of the time.
So its a nice bonus feat but who cares for it the basics are missing? (Thats just an example to show the way I see it that has nothing to do how good this feat is made and how good the graphics look)
For me its I wont buy a game just for its graphics.
And to all those people who are complaining about people whinning about a game which isnt released yet - Iam glad those people post because such a forum is an excellent feedback for developers I think which they should pay attention. At least those people have an opinion which they state in hope to get a product on which they would be willing to spend their money on.
Everyone is entitled his opinion the whinners and the anti-whinners and everyone can post it (in a good mannerd way of course) that what those forums are for.
And no one stops those masses which seem to be happy with the way this game goes to post their happiness too but if they dont feel the need to do this dont blame other for posting their impressions.

I still have great hopes for this game but I think they really need to rethink some things. Sorry for the long post.

Cheers to all

Hey!
Most should probably go get the game as it is the latest U-sim title and actually containing a lot of added good stuff.
However, with campaigns like the ones in good old AOD/CAOD, Silent Hunter 3 at last would be the real successor and King!

SH3 won't have an AOD like campaign...
