My fellow Kaleuns

Welcome to the January SH4 Screenshot Competition Submissions Thread for UNEDITED entries.

The Screenshot Competition allows any forum member to show off, and compete each month for the coveted certificate, signed by me for authentification. Begun in April 2006 with the SH3 competition (Still running of course), as the month's progress, we'll build an excellent ˜portfolio' of shots we can all be proud of.

Each winner will receive a fantastic certificate, with their name printed on it and signed by me for authentication posted to them wherever they live in the world! (Credit to VG for designing the Certificate - Great Job!)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v642/antsmith/cert-colour2-1.jpg

Taking part is really simple. There are a few rules and guidelines, and below are some tips for posting up your shots Remember to vote too when voting opens each month, and add any comments or questions you wish to ask about the screenshot you are voting for.

How do I enter?

1. Submit your UNEDITED screenshots from the 1st of month until the 16th, when the thread will be closed and another sticky thread for voting will be opened, which will link back to here so you can view all the entries

2. Submit no more than 4 screenshots. It will be easier for voting purposes if you post all 4 in the same post.

3. Please remove your ˜dials' before posting your screenshot. Press 'del' on your number pad on your keyboard to remove the dials, take your screenshot then press it again to get them back. Scroll down to see how to remove the dials if you've forgotten to do this when you took the shot.

4. The only manipulation of screenshots allowed is to LIGHTEN very dark pictures e.g. night shot / underwater shots. Photoshop, Irfan View etc may be used. This rule will be adhered to strictly. http://www.irfanview.com/ and no borders or frames please.

5. All screenshots should be 800x600 pixels. Minoos very kindly compiles the entries into a one click view-all link which only contains 800x600 screenshots. Updated - Forum members using widescreen monitors that prevent 800 x 600 screenshots will still be allowed to enter - please try to get them as close as you can.

I will endeavour to contact via PM anyone who posts outsized shots or shots with dials on them to give them time to resubmit.

How do I vote?

Voting starts on the 17th of each month and finishes on the last day of the month. Any forum member can vote – even if you haven't entered the competition itself.

You get TWO votes per competition – 1st vote awards 3 points and the 2nd vote awards 1 point.

I need help!

Doug D kindly offers some good advice for those wishing to remove dials from their screencaps if they have left dials showing:

Process:
Step 1: Right click picture > select 'open with' > 'Paint'
Step 2: Select 'dotted rectangle' tool, place curser in one corner of desired picture, leaving out the dials e.g. top left, and drag to opposite corner (bottom right), let go.
Step 3: Select 'Edit' > 'copy to' and give new file name. (Note: defaults to .BMP file.)
Step 4: Repeat Step 1 on new file and select 'save as' and '.jpg' in 'Save as type' drop menu and save.

Now you have your great competition entry screenshot without the dials and we can all vote for you.
There is a guide to getting your screenshots posted in the forum too Here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/4451080164)

Caribean eh?
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/Silent%20Hunter%20III/Contest08-01/Caribean.jpg
U-181 entering Caribean waters... not exactly what we expected...

Royal Navy : Falke 0-1
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/Silent%20Hunter%20III/Contest08-01/Falke.jpg
We took a chance, when we stumbled over a small convoy consisting of 3 large ships only protected by a lone escort. U-459 (milchcow) insisted we should take on one Falke torpedo. Haven't seen or tried one before, so now should be the time... Placed U-181 in front of the convoy with stern pointing towards them. At 1200 meter we were detected. Waited. At 400 meter we fired the Falke, at 300 meter fired a G7e and had just ordered "Crash dive!", when the entire destroyer went up in the largest explosion we have ever seen. 4 hours later we had all 3 ships, which turned out to be medium tankers. 32000 tonnes in the book.

Straight ahead, Skipper! At 140 meter!
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/Silent%20Hunter%20III/Contest08-01/Skipper.jpg
March 1943. Outside the picture two Flower Corvettes are closing in too to give us a rough time, but they both left after an hour or so. But not this guy. He stayed with us long into the night - having all the time in the world. A new experience! And he knew exactly where we were all the time. Sometimes he would shut down and lie still for a while, then a little pinging around like listening for other subs and then turn the beam back on us and prepare for another run. He dropped his DCs so perfectly ahead of us, that we even had to use emergency back not to sail into the DCs path... At one point I lost my nerves as we were sinking out of control below 220 meters and franticly ordered blow ballast! As it didn't work I order flank ahead and did get the boat under control - and found we could in fact stay at 240 meter (!). Lucky for us, that "B" doesn't mean "Blow ballast!"... He left us several hours later and we haven't touched a convoy since. We saw our end coming.

Crossing paths...
http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/Silent%20Hunter%20III/Contest08-01/Crossing.jpg
Careful when crossing the path of a hungry shark. U-181 at the coast of Gabon. Hadn't had any contacts in three weeks. Took out the troop transporter with two eels, she was abandoned. We blew tanks, manned the gun and took out the unarmed merchant in two shots. Gruesome and highly efficient. Less than 30 minutes from detection till we continued our trip south.
Guess we were hungry.

Happy hunting!

I have not had chance to play SH3 for some time, so I have had to dig deep into my screenshot vault. The only problem is I cannot remember which ones I have used before http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hopefully these are fresh screen shots http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks VG...the torpedo pic was a pure fluke, I had sent two torpedoes at a target but only set one to fast mode which was the second to be launched...it blasted past the first and slower set torpedo, I managed to catch the moment when it went past!

The deadline for entries is extended to the 20th, given the poll took up some of the time in January, so if anyone else has entries by all means get them in! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I like to award Subject_Rod 3 points for his "Caribean eh?", not because I would find the image anything particular, if it wasn't for this title. It makes the image funny, so titles naming is important as well.

For the 1 point, I award it to VG for "Guardian angel", though I may think it should have been lightened just a little bit...

Sorry to be the first person on this board to take a thread OT, but has image max size been changed to 1024X768? Or max width 1024?

Or is GrandDad banned? http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z15/subject_rod/smilies/mean.gif
