View Full Version : Oleg in new issue of GFW mag + 1st addon for BoBSoW

Hey I got my latest issue of Games for Windows (formerly Computer Gaming Monthly), where they sat down with Oleg and discussed his philosophies and such about the series. He seems really to be focused on delivering a great game from what I read.

Apparently in April 2005, he had 2 car accidents back to back which forced him to not be able to fly for two years! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif I had no clue whatsoever of this!

Ok, and he talks a little bit about Storm Of War, saying that they are also have done more in-depth material modeling including their physical properties, and this can also affect instruments, levers etc. inside of the cockpit!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

We already knew about the fact that London and other cities will have AI controlled vehicles that follow logical routes and such, and how radar will be a very important part of the game play. Also dynamic weathering has been greatly improved from their previous in house version.

Furthermore the talked about how they're using a different approach to rendering the ground:" tiling a large number of special textures for hi res close up quality and reserving satellite data for elevation maps!

They will also be releasing end-user design tools, so people can make their own maps, planes vehicles ground objects, but limiting of course to single player while not touching the multiplayer plane sets: "Letting fans access the core of a combat sim invites rampant multiplayer cheating, this is why Microsoft's combat sim franchise died. Our multiplayer is cheater free".

AND FOR THE ICING ON THE CAKE: (I am directly quoting him for this one:
"After that, we may release an add-on with the Fw-190 with some British Planes with the appropriate scenario".

Release date written June 2007, but CFW has been always pushed back the date to the following month since early 2006...

p.s. They gave Il-1946 10 on 10 ( I agree with the reviewer)

p.p.s. the issue also has an article about Team fortress 2 - apparently no more nades, to alleviate all the spam killing, absolutely bold decision

Bringing the FW190 with an addon is quite a challenge.Basically the Spit, even the V doesn`t stand a chance.I`d like tha NOT being changed for gameplay purposes.

But ofcourse I`d always like the Gustav over anything.

I can see why getting the Fw-190 in makes good sense but a Channel '42'd be dispiriting. An airwar over the Reich kind've thing would be more playable and draw in our American friends as well as providing some top Lufty rides.

Ok, Ok. Two guys then.

Anyway, I'd really enjoy an 1942 scenario with rarer subtypes and rarer plane types than the ones boringly known from every other sim...

A true first Merlin 61 Spit IX, a pressurized 109G-1 (I don't think any sim had a pressurized 109 so far, but it would be very fitting for '42 Western front!), a FW 190 A-3, a Swordfish maybe and a Typhoon is a must - for all the great battles of 1942..

Neat to speculate so far as people don't assume that they will be getting anything. But that'd be neat...a FW190A-3, a Spitfire V, Typhoon, maybe even a Merlin 61 IX, Bf109F, and a Mustang Mark I would make the cross channel fighting quite entertaining! Hopefully Dieppe is included on the map and we'll be able to do some interesting scenarios. Even if the RAF did get its butt kicked on that one.

Yep. And they will hound him about it till no end. If he starts posting here again he will mostly likely get annoyed quickly because of it and then vanish again.

Its sad really. Every time Oleg post something no matter what it is about 90% of the people only post to ask for something. It does not matter how much he provides for us it will never be enough and they will not be able to help themselves and continue to beg for more.

Too much time behind the PC?
The truth is that people with real lives don`t get to even follow the project sometimes.Because of huge amounts of work I didn`t take a 2nd glance before I switched from 4.03 to 4.08.

Just try to get in touch with real life some more or find a real life hobby. For those actually having multiple other occupations BoB is just a few steps away.

Look where we are now.In 2005 it seemed like it was never going to come, now it`s like a max of a year away from release.

Release the 1942 MkIX with teh F190, balanced restored

Why do we need 'balance' all the time?
The guys in real life didn't have the 'luxury of balance' at all times...
Fight with what you have!

If you really need 'balance' then fly Spit vs Spit... I know it's not historical, but neither is 'balance'.

Flyable Fw 190, 109F, Spit V, Typhoon would make a neat add-on and easy to make as only thing that has to be done is to add planes.

Tiresome maybe. Work? No.

Disagree with this. I do both (or even 3 different ones...)

- Hard work for post office, nightshift work unloading trains and truck, countless mail bags of 20-30kg, roll boxes of 800kg, etc.

- 200-300hrs/month on the computer doing maps, photo editing and layout work for a book.

- travel research and photograpy...

All of them are exhausting. The worst was the computer work in my opinion. You are alone staring into this screen for hours and hours.
Work for post office is hard but we got a good crew and enjoying the job because of that. Plus if you are off your body might feel tired but your brain is not - much easier to switch off and do something else.
Last part, the travel stuff is hard work as well - and few people see that as work; as with all work that goes into anything slightly artisitc or related with holidays people consider it not as work but as fun and earning money in top of it.. how wrong they are! But it is sure the most interesting work of the 3!

Cool you got a great family, btw! In my life I probalby missed that junction somewhere...
Can't have it all...

And no, it was agreeing with your post, directed at those who spend too much time (free time, not work time... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif) behind the PC and got nothing better to do than to complain and ask for more, more and more...

So back to the the topic and the moaning:
http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
I want Pacific Malaya/Singpore/Philippines/Burma add-on for SoW!

Doesn't have to be the first one, I would say do France first, North Africa, etc, that by then the allied planes are all modeled and only the Japanese have to be added...

If there was any chance that BOB would appear let's say in the next four months we would have had a website, with teasers, demo etc.

So my point of view is that BOB is not due before 2008 at least if all what has been said would be implemented.

I do not care if I must wait as long as the quality in the end is excellent (I trust Oleg for that), the product runs perfectly under Vista/XP with multicore processors and in native DirectX 10/DirectX 9. Yes the two modes must be available if not Vista users will be disappointed and in a year or so and later on that will be the market.

The only thing then I ask to Oleg is to keep improving IL2, adding more objects.

My hartly request "SOLDIERS !" and a few capsized ships 90 degrees and 180 degrees (use existing models and just rotate them along the flotation line).

This would be nothing to do. To model one soldier for German, US and Japanese, in three to four different postures would be a very small effort but would increase tremendously the quality and immersion of all the scenarios.
By adding soldiers we can create platoons, columns etc. etc. and I agree it is hard to say but war is war, so there must be a dead soldier model for an area when it is destroyed like we have for other objects.

You better go to Lockheed, Grumman and other aircraft factories in the US, who think they need to get money for advertising, instead of paying for it and tell them about your pain.

Remember, this is not a European round by choice.

Besides that, I really wonder where some people take their knowledge of things ahead. Maybe you should use your magical chrystall ball to make some money and give it to them?

Well here the trick.. SOW will probably not satisfied many for the theater and planes choice but think of this.. It will be a very different way to fly the planes and challenging and all the great weather things to come.. me too i don't like this theater but the new engine and model flights will be on it self a well worth the buy big time... there is no doubt about this.

Korea will be there with all the great planes that you all love. I think it will be great and very positive.. Enjoy the fun of flying virtually.

Geez guys the game hasn't even been released and some of you are already WHINING like babies http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Hows about waiting for the game flying it for a few weeks and then maybe, possibly, starting your (predictable) whines then? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Since I'd be willing to bet that even more folks are going to show their butts in here before I lock the thread I will do something that someone should have done a while ago.

"..... when he isnt spending time with his kids, counts skiing, diving, windsurfing, and snapping nationally recognized , award winning underwater photographs among his seasoned hobbies.

"Flight sims that emphasize storylines over features dont stay on the market long. "

"In other flight sims, piloting simulaed planes is actually much more complicated than flying real ones."

Scan the IL2 boards and you'll eventually stumble across customary quibbling over things like IL-2's physics, fuel mixtures, elevation efficacy... and whether IL-2's renditions reflect accurately or with bias the basic plane pizazz of the game's numerous nationalities. "It's not that we're doing something wrong, it's mainly the bias in post war literature." defends Maddox. "Americans grew up reading that the Mustang was the world's best fighter. Russians grew up reading how the Soviet airforce rolled over the Nazis. Then they run their games and get shot down in P-51s or Yaks. Or the Germans go in and see they cant score 352 kills ot that Russians actually put up a fight and had decent planes. Echoing Churchill's statement that "History is written by the victors." Maddox believes that discriptions of superior planes and pilots can be found in virtually every country's accounts of the war."

"..... it's pilots who win dogfights... not airplanes.. simulation or no"

On SoW:BoB

"We're modelling the complete internal structure of the aircraft.. not just visually but physically.."

"....street level traffic... busses follow thier routes and stop at bus stops.."

".. reserving satellite data for high elevation...."

"historically accurate ground radar..."

For the whole 9.. you will have to buy the mag. But it was a nice read.. although like most things about BoB that I find it just wasnt enough.. and it wont be till I get that puppy on my HD. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It`s just that people who are forced by their lives to make shorter or longer breaks from IL2 really get to enjoy the game. The flaws and inaccuracies rarely bug those who have limited time with the game.

I remember myself being overly excited bout BoB in 2005 but so much have happened since then that even releasing it in June 2008 doesn`t impress me.

"History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon.", was what Napoleon said.

The original is much older. I have a book about Celtic culture, where this is also mentioned as an ancient word of wisdom.

I guess you mean Celtica and France was the nation called that and it is that way, because the Celts originated from there and had their largest influence here and in Germany.
A number of tribes lived on the island, but didn't leave very much influence. Most of what people in England think is Celtic, especially in language and culture, is originating from the Welsh tribes, which didn't have much in common with the Celts.

Hopefully Dieppe is included on the map and we'll be able to do some interesting scenarios. Even if the RAF did get its butt kicked on that one.

a SoW:BoB "to-pay-for" AdOn called "Dieppe" would realy be nice http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

with flyables like
Spitfire Mk.Vb
Spitfire Mk.IXc (Merlin 61)
Typhoon Mk.Ib
Mustang Mk.I
Boston Mk.III

Bf109G-1
Fw190A-3
Ju88A-4

+1

i wish there will be also jabo loadouts for Bf-109F-4 and FW190, plus flyable Beaufighter Mk.Ic together with accurate DM for ships and ground targets

another MUST add-on would be a dedicated "SOW:The Night Blitz" (just an idea) for early nightfighters... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

so there could be 2 add-ons, a Channel '41 with 109F2/F4's and the very early FW's plus the the Dieppe '42, but all this writing is speculations. Time will tell...
