Westland P12

Interestingly, despite the RAF's warding off a German invasion of Britain in 1940, Britain, like Germany, believed this to be only a temporary postponement, making preparations for the defence of the British Isles still of vital importance. Among schemes put forward for strafing German forces as they hit British beaches or for striking at supporting surface vessels was the Westland P12, a straight modification of the Lysander army co-operation aircraft. Initially planned with two 20 mm cannon attached to the fixed undercarriage legs, a redesign led to the rear fuselage being cut short, a tail gun turret added, and the adoption of a new rear-mounted "tandem wing" with endplate fins and rudders for longintudinal stability. The P12 was first flown on 27 July 1941 and was immediately shown to be highly manoeuvrable. Sent for official trials, it was never put into production as the perceived threat diminished.

anyone else odd plane want show?

No,that is an actual plane there my friend.I think it is a Lysander,or "Lizzie".It was an "experiment" to give the Liz some better defense. Not sure if it actually saw action though.

It was an emergency conversion of a Lysander done by Westland. In the panic mood of early 1940, it was designed as a straffing airplane. The rear turret was the standard 4 Browning Boulton-Paul design used on the Whitley and Defiant.

The basic idea was that the aircraft would fly along the enemy beach head and the rear gunner would spray anything that he could. The airplane apparently flew very succesfully but development never went beyond the original conversion.

IIRC there was also a plan to fit Lysanders with foward firing Oerlikon 20mm cannon. I think a mock up was made, but it never flew.

Ok, my wrong http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I really thought that some elements were out of proportion on that shot, plus it seemed to be made from differenet pictures (look at the wings).
Anyway, what a weird concept an what an ugly plane!!

Where the wing is attached to the plane, half of it seems to be attached to the canopy. Wouldnt that be slightly complicated to build? Also the tail surfaces and wings look strange being on a different level. Very strange design overall.

Quite. I'd say the Lysander looks to be about a 9 pinter to me. Of course the fellow who then decided to bolt a Lancaster tail to the back of it was probably on his eleventh or twelth.
