View Full Version : PF vs other games - how much are you playing each?

Dexmeister

Out of interest and because of all the great games out these days I figured I'd ask how much you're all playing PF versus others.

This is what I'm playing in order of hours logged in each this week:

1. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (XBox)
2. Brothers in Arms (Xbox)
3. FS2004 - a part of my weekly gaming every week
4. PF...

1. PF

2. FS2004. Looking for a decent 747 (Not Meljet or PSOKY)

Dexmeister

SeaNorris, I know it's not a 747, but the PMDG 737 is such a step above freeware planes it makes Fs2004 seem like an entirely new sim.

That said I like the Meljet 747s...

My gaming alternates between season. In August/Sept, I pick up the latest copy of Madden football, and am happily occupied with it till somewhere around the Super Bowl. Immediately after that, its back to flight simming I go. Past couple years, its been WW2OL. This season, I decided to try out this one. I doubt I'll go back to WW2OL http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Regardless of season, tho, the dog/house/wife limit me to about 5-10 hours a week of gaming.

I played a lot of Rome Total War since it came out last fall. I certainly got my money's worth, but haven't touched it in a couple of months.

I tried Star Wars KOTOR 2 last month. I'm not much into RPGs. It was enjoyable, but then a bug, 30 hours into the game, ruined it for me. The new ATI cat 5.4 fix should help. Don't know if I will try and finish it.

I tried Pirates! last week. Great game, I loved the original. But for some reason, this game couldn't hold my interest for more than ten hours. It's too easy.

I have an unopened copy of Half Life 2 sitting on my desk. I really looked forward to this game. I just can't bring myself to play it. Maybe it is all the **** about steam.

So, I have actually been playing FB/PF a lot lately. I can go months without touching it, but I always come back. It certainly gets the award for longevity.

My other favorites, that I often come back too, are the combat mission series. I might have to fire that up.

Recently got SH 3 and love it. Been a fan since the days of Commadore 64 and Silent Service. Also have the original Silent Hunter, Commanders Edition.

On Weekends It's strictly PF with my squad mates. When I'm not on with them I play some of the following, Call of Duty, Silent Hunter 3, Sid Meier's Pirates, Battlefield 1942, Battlefield Vietnam, Star Wars Battlefront, and then some various xbox games. PF is fun as hell when playing with the squad. Silent Hunter has turned out to be pretty awesome, but call of duty is just a great game to blow off some steam to. I also play golf every Saturday, and from time to time break out the beer and play some lawn darts with my brother lol.

FB+AEP+PF I play the most of. Offline, online, mission building, you name it.

Then C&C Generals when I want to unwind and blow stuff up. WarCraft 3 if I don't want to play Generals. Raven Shield on PC or Halo 2 on X-Box if those aren't cutting it.

None of them is as interesting as the Forgotten Battles series.

Pfft, now lets see...

Medieval total war(with Wikings of course). This one is still wery much in use. Great game.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on XBOX.

TES3 Morrowind. Everlasting singleplayer RPG The uber RPG to me!

FB/AEP/PF, Few quickies every now and then. Mostly before wife drags me to grocery store. I dunno why. Something is missing(dont mean the patchhttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif) Probably got tired to boring campaigns.

AEP/PF the rest of the time along with FS9 and CoD. But the new Pirates is looking VERY interesting since I played that way back with SS.

Heh, now that you mention it, I just this week got a copy of PF, and have been busy starting a new job, so i haven't even loaded it up...

In the meantime, it's been either the old IL-2 (played online with a few 'holdouts') or Target:Rabaul, which has gotten the lion's share of my flying time.

Why worry about Steam if you've already got half-life 2?

I mean sure Steam is a draconian measure, and even a little annoying at times - but you're not going to have any trouble with it unless you're pirating the games. Since you've already got a copy, Steam isn't going to do anything to you at all...after all, you don't even need it running unless you want to play.

Trust me, you won't regret the mind-farg monolith that HL2 is: the only thing that gets me is that it seemed too short: longer than the original, though.

And I'll still come back to IL2.

I don't understand this steam whining. It's a good little program!! It helps you play all your games, downloads and installs updates for you and tells you what's happening in the studios (Their next update will contain, new maps etc) and I've never had a problem with it. Just install the **** game http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Pretty amazing how some peoples whining can stop you playing the best FPS ever made...

I for one hated that Steam gig. Why the hell impose that on a gamer? Took me 10 minutes to fire up HL2 the first time I played it.

Anyway, I've had my PC upgraded recently, and my joystick has pretty much every button busted from overuse, so I make a pledge not to install FB+AEP+PF again until the patch comes out, at which time I'll get a new stick and take to the skies again.

Until then, I'm distracting myself with:

Rome Total War
Act of War: Direct Action
Homeworld 2
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Star Wars Republic Commando
Doom 3
Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War

And a little Star Wars Battlefront for multiplayer fun.

Getting a pc 4 years ago and a flight stick was the best thing Ive ever done for my bank account. Started out on the Atari 2600 and was always a 2 new games a month person, $$$$, right up until the pc and starting with CFS1. Now I buy maybe 2 games a year if they are really interesting, play them between flight sim breaks, finish them, back to IL2 full stop.

FS2004 doesn't save screenshots as far as I know. I use Hypersnap to catch my shots, but you could use FRAPS or many other tools as well.

P.S. Treetop, I hear you on all the FS2004 stuff. Even being very selective with what planes I keep, I've got boatloads of top notch freeware planes, 4-5 payware ones (worth every cent!), terrain mesh for most of the world, add-on airport sceneries, payware traffic, voice activation for ATC comms, and on and on. What an excellent investment FS has been! Such a great sim with something new coming out all the time. Now THAT'S how to keep a sim fresh.

I'm SO surprised how few people are playing Splinter Cell CT or Brothers in Arms! What great games, both UBISoft too!

Yes, you CAN save screenshots in FS 2004. Press printscreen, then your pic will be all ready to paste into Photoshop. Just open a new document (it will already be the right size) and chose 'paste' from the edit menu. This works in Microsoft's Paint too. I think that you can only save one pic at a time, but you should be able to pause the game, temporarily close the FS2004 window (Ctrl Entr I think?), and paste as many times as you like! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
BTW one of Just Flight's Spits was included as a demo (seems to run forever!)in the latest PC pilot magazine. It has a great flight model, though it needs a light touch. It makes me long for PF's awaited FMs

I enjoyed the first Splinter Cell, but I still prefer MGS. Better story, not so much emphasis on sneaking about.

As for BiA, the game was pulled out of the stores here in Portugal, because there was some problem with it that rendered multiplayer impossible. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

For FS2004 I use FS Terrain (realistic elevation data point spaced either 19 or 38 metres apart, I don't remember which) and VFR photo-realistic scenery, which is really fantastic AND frame-rate friendly! (The recent FS 2004 patch now allows for 19 metres between elevation-data points in FS2004, though I don't know if the FS terrain or VFR terrain add-ons allow for this level of detail, does anybody know?)

I still play IL2 merged online some. But I have gone to playing SH3 a lot. Awesome Sim.

I play FS2004 somedays and been working on my Homebuilt aircraft to get it ready for flying this summer.
I am not flying IL2 PF much as I am wiating for the forever patch or upgrade to come out.
When that comes out it will inject some newness into the game and I will go back to it full time for awhile.
I have been flying this sim from the Demo when it first hit the web, what 4.5 years now?
But there are some great sims out now and more coming out that I want to play also. I have missed a few flying this game, it is one of the greatest but I do not want to miss out on some of the others either.

Download the free version of Fraps (google it) : it lets you assign a key to take screenshots and a folder where they are stored.

A neat utility for basic editing (resizing, sharpening, contrast, light, etc...) is Irfanview : very user-friendly and free too.

No problem Treetop64, the easiest way to save screenshots is to paste them into the Paint programme that comes with Windows (look in Program: utilities, or under tools, I dont remember where exactly, but alongside disc defrag' and Wordpad). You don't even need to create a new document, just paste (I think!!)

I don't want to sound too negative here, IrfanView is a great program. I dont however think it suits screenshots very well. Banding of colours can be seen instead of gradual transitions. Skies can be ruined. In other areas you won't notice much of a loss in picture quality, though close comparrison with pics in XP's picture browser show obvious loss in quality. You can open a jpeg in IrfanView at the same time as you are looking at it in XP's browser and directly compare the picture quality.(Loss in quality depends a lot on the type of pic, compression level etc.) IrfanView can be very usefull though, and should be recommended, I use it all the time for pictue (photo) viewing. I would have doubts about picture editing in this program though.
On the positive side Irfan View offers the ability to change Gamma Levels (the relative brightness withina pic). This allows you to brighten a pictue without burning out the lightest colours, and helps give screenshots that magical glowing look. This feature can be found in IrfanView by clicking on Enhance Colours under the Image menu. Adjustments are made using the Gamma Correction slider.

Here is what I am playing.

Call of Duty. (sometimes you just got to go online and hunt tanks with a panzerfaust)

War in the Pacific and Uncommon Valor-the best strategic games out there. Love those carriers.

Combat Mission Afrika Korps. Still great after all of these years. Can't wait for them to do ver 2.

Campaign Gettysburg. In spite of the worst possible graphics imaginable the scope of the campaign and game itself is great.

When I feel like something different. Half Life2 and Doom3. Lots of fun.

My next purchase will have to be SH3 from the sounds of the raves it is getting on this board.

If you want something more advanced than Irfanview, try Gimp. It's pretty much on the same level feature- and complexity-wise as Paint Shop Pro, but it's free. About the only bad things are it has a fairly steep learning curve and doesn't support some file formats (like PSP files).

PF merged
Rome: Total War
Soldiers: Heroes of World War II

The PF/IL-2 series is by far the best, but when I need a break, I like the intrigue and tactical aspects of Rome. I'm playing the short campaign as the Britons and had allied with all three of the Roman factions and Germany and then BAM, most of them turned on me in the space of a few turns!

Besides, ya gotta love a game where one of the units you can put on the field is armed with the contaminated severed heads of your opponents and you throw them at them. They are called Head Hurlers of course and they are very effective!

I used to play PF+FB+AEP all the time with nothing else, now that the fix has sort of run off (the lack of team work, I need to find me a squadron), I find myself playing a few other games,

Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour

On Steam:
Counter-Strike: Source
Day of Defeat
Zombie Panic
Natural Selection
Note about Steam: It is so worth it, the game updates take barely half an hour to complete (unless buy them through Steam, which I did and was greatly happy with the results). Once you get used to the interface, it's a really nice little program, and by the way, it doesn't effect game performance unless your system is really that bad.

Battlefield 1942 Forgotten Hope - masaker2005, glad to see another FH'er, wish more people played this mod, it's what an arcadish psuedo-realistic WWII game should be like, I'd go so far as to say it's almost as fun as PF (at least it has the Devastator :P)

For Xbox:
Halo 2
Doom 3
Burnout 3
Haven't picked up a copy of Brothers In Arms, is it worth it?

PF was an EXTREME diappointment for me.
the FMB is almost impossible to learn well, and the only thing that smokes for a while is an aircraft when it crashes... trying to sink ships is just a big waste of time...you might get a small puff of smoke that will last for a few seconds...

I played Call of Duty/United Offensive for a while, but that has worn off also.

Brothers in Arms is a new WWll shooter which is fairly fun, but it also is just a very short term game..

I Tried Starwars Battlefront, but that was a complete waste of $54.00...u spend all of your time running across a map only to be told when you finely get to the other side that the game is over u either won or lost...without doing a da*n thing...very poor game.

I even tried CFS3 with the "pay for patch" Firepower, but it still is so riddled with problems that it just isn't worth the hastle...

I miss the older games...that were actual games and were fun, but they only worked on win98...

right now i'm really not playing anything because they just aren't any fun...no real enjoyment...

Been working my way through Half-life 2, which is great fun. I only play for a couple of hours a week, so I'm almost through it for the first time.

I also finally installed the Forgotten Hope mod for BF1942. This is the so-called "realism" mod, that removes a lot of the more arcade-y features, and gives you a whole new set of vehicles, weapons, and maps. It's a lot fun. Flight model is still absolutely awful, though, so I fly Sturmovik when I want air action. I do enjoy shooting down the funny toy planes with AA though, which annoys the would-be "aces" to no end...
Kind of interested to see the new modern-era one, Battlefield 2.

PF mostly (but generally on the East Front, none of this Pacific nonsense).
Call of Duty but nearly finished United Offensive.
Enjoyed HL2 but finished.
Same for Vietcong and addon, re-visit for the odd firefight.
Used to play a lot of Talonsoft's Campaign Series and tried a few East Front 2 scenarios recently. Could have been great if the AI wasn't so stoopid.

Do any of you still play America's Army? Used to spend quite a bit of time with that game until it went with T & L minimum requirements, which is beyond my Dell 2350.

I play PF almost exclusively, but also enjoy CoD, Counter-Strike, MOHAA, Ghost Recon, Athena Sword (Rainbow 6) and progeny.

That is surprising for many reasons. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

1. FB+AEP+PF (I was beginning to slack off a little, but since I've just joined a squadron I've figured out that I've been missing out on most of the sim!)

2. Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM). Most people don't believe me on this one: it's a rogue-style adventure game (meaning all ASCII characters, no graphics), but it's held my attention longer than any graphical RPG I've seen around. Thomas Biskup, the guy who designed it, has been adding to it on and off for 10 years and I've been addicted to it for 5. It's incredible: every time you think you've found all the embedded secrets, you find that you missed out on something - because the game doesn't drop obvious 'hints' for everything like most I've seen. Check it out: www.adom.de (http://www.adom.de)

3. Tribes Vengeance - Aww yeah, jetpack combat forever!

4. Red Orchestra. Incredible - I used to think DoD was an interesting realism Mod. I've been slacking off on this, but 3.2 just came out so it'll probably go back up to just below PF again on my list.

I can only play PF occasionally lately, as the computer I have access to right now is way below minimum spec. Its fun to fly once or twice, then I just get sick of waiting for the computer.

I've been thinking about starting a new campaign in Hearts of Iron, but I've been too busy in the garage lately.

I've got a '79 YZ125 that I've been working on (it needed a good home), and that seems to be eating most of my free time.

My enthusiasm for PF has cooled a bit recently sadly... To fill out my available gaming time I've been playing some older games that I've loved for a long time like MTW and Ghost Recon. Recently I got Warhammer 40K Dawn of War which has been a laugh riot! I've always liked RTS types and have plaed ALL the CnC titles, but this one is *really* special. Great graphics relatively smart AI for solo play/skirmish etc and Lots of available mods/maps. I think one of the things I enjoy about it the most are the sound effects! "Rally Squad! To me my Brothers!" or my personal favorite, "Eat BOLTGUN!"

I'm sad to see that great game Operation Flashpoint was never mentioned.

Anyway i play:
PF merged
NFSU2 (which is THE best street racing game for all you racers out there)

MOH Pacific Assault (awesome game but too short)

Operation Flashpoint (the BEST first person shooter SIMULATION that was ever created, that right its 10% Game 90% SIMULATION, it get as close to the real first person combat then any other game )But its old though

I still respect all you guys games, but when Operation Flashpoint 2 comes next year...

Ehhh, OpFlash is a bit too...little annoying things for me. In terms of they way you stand, run, etc. And I hate it when you just barely touch something in a vehicle going over 5km/h and you explode http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif. And the cruddy vehicle game engines, it's real dodge the way you have to control aircraft and ground vehicles, especially cars, trucks ,generally things with wheels. Tanks are easier. I don't have it anymore but when I did, I only used it to play around with community addons, which are pretty stunningly good btw. My mate has a bout 3 gigs of downloaded addons http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif But won't touch PF http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

TES3 Morrowind. Everlasting singleplayer RPG The uber RPG to me!

Another Morrowind player! I've been addicted to that game since it came out, and I'm still not done with ALL of it yet. I can be found trying to keep spammers in line on the Tamriel Rebuilt forums.

Being the heretic here that I am, I play a ton of cfs3, ground pounding bliss. I've been waiting for the patch to get a good campaign going along with the online dogfights, I'm bored to death of the same **** a6m vs F4F dogfights all the time.

Been playing alot of Brothers in Arms. It's ok, but I'm not finding it nearly as exciting as call of duty. The weapons are too **** innacurate, you wind up missing german soldiers that are standing less than five feet from you. looking down the sights of your gun is useless too

OpFlash is a mixed bag for me. I love it most of the time, but sometimes it gets too frustrating. They could have made soldier movement more intuitive and kept the realism though. I wasn't even aware they were making a sequel, I'd love to see gameplay like opflash with graphics perhaps like far cry.

IL-2 (in many forms) 75%
OFP 25%

Before OFP2 comes though, I suggest keeping an eye or two on Enemy in Sight (http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard311/ikonboard.cgi?s=10ef220ab9fbc87a4ff0108f225ca4ce;a ct=ST;f=11;t=45515), made by the same company that brought us Hidden & Dangerous and Mafia, suspiciosly Czech too.

Tripped over this thread, and thought to give my 2 cents worth.

Been doing PF stand alone for a while, but the last couple of weeks, been doing CFS3 a lot. Many new mission downloads for that sim, and with the ease of getting noseart, planes, ships and pilots, plus many new skins, I have been loading CFS3 into a whole new flight sim.

It is now nothing as released from M$. A whole new game.

I don't do MMO, RTS or FPS games that aren't flight sims. Realism of flight dynamics are important to me. I was a pilot during 'Nam, have flown several restored WWII birds, and have come to appreciate realistic piston powered flight sims; especially with critical engine management controls, fuel and ammo in limited quantities, and required take offs and landings to complete missions.

Regards,
spqr1951

I'm glad to see some response about flashpoint. Though with all due respect flashpoint game engine will be 5 years old this April. It is true about the addons, they the only thing that keep game alive, keep the flame lit, not mention the brilliant mission/camapaign makers. Well enough said.VBS1 too

Very interesting flashpoint was made in Chech Republic, Il-2 In Russia. Both are very interesting games. Maybe Bohemia Interactive and Maddox Games will outwit all others...
