Just finished watching Downfall, and I must say I'm very impressed. The casting was first rate, looking at the key players photographs on wikipedia the likeness of the actors and actresses is very similar to the characters. Bruno Ganz was awesome in the movie, the whole film had me enthralled from from start to finish.

If you have not seen it - it is a must see movie.

I still prefer the "Hitler's car stolen" parody of Downfall. For those who joined since the last time I posted this, enjoy:

And the fun thing is : Did you know that the german word for a driver's license is "Führerschein" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This literally translates to "leader's certificate" as you "lead" the vehicle , get it ?

There is a nice old fun rhyme :

"Der Führer war ein armes Schwein, er hatte keinen Führerschein"

Which means :

The Führer was a poor swine, he didnt had a Führerschein. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

Celeon owns the "Extended Edition" which contains additional 25 minutes which were cut from the cinema version.

Beside a "making of" DVD it has also a little booklet with photos that compare the real persons with the actors

That's a shame, it would have been nice to get the whole version. I have tried some of the on-line stores and they only have the same version I have got. Was your version exclusive to Germany?

I have to say, I prefer the 'new' Frau Junge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

@ Celeon - the German name for the film is 'Der Untergang', but it was translated as 'Downfall' - should it have been called 'The End'? Is that a closer translation? Maybe it doesn't make such a good movie title as 'Downfall'.

The reason I ask is that I have a book called 'Hamburg - The End' which was originally written in German and titled 'Hamburg - Der Untergang'. The translator felt that 'The End' best conveyed the meaning in English.

I have to agree VG - she is rather attractive http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif - she looks far better at the end when she is riding that push bike.

Yes this could be. It has the logo of the TV channel on it that was broadcasting this version.

You dont miss that much. The young hitleryouth boy shoots a russian soldier, and some additional dialogues in the bunker. Nothing too important. They speak about the hope that a new improved v-2 could still turn the tide and Hitler says something about Roosevelt and something about New York.

No, Downfall fits pretty exactly. Only the (THE) before Downfall is missing.

I was going to start a separate thread for this post, but I think it more appropriate to post this here.

According to "World War II" magazine [an American publication to which I have subscribed for the last two years] July/August 2007 issue, there is now only one remaining survivor of Hitler's bunker in Berlin. Baron Bernd Freytag von Loringhoven recently passed away. He left the bunker, with Hitler's permission, one day before Hitler killed himself. The sole survivor is Rochus Misch, Hitler's bodyguard.

Celeon, thanks for the information about the extended version of Downfall. It is amazing how so many actors/actresses [I refuse to call female performers actors] resemble so closely their real life characters. I'm going to see if I can get a copy of Downfall; I hope it is for sale in Canada. If not, does the version you own have the option of viewing the film with English subtitles? I prefer to view WW2 movies in German, with English subtitles; it's one way I improve my understanding of German. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will soon have a new job, driving 18-wheelers in the US and Canada on long hauls. If I get the job, I hope to invest in a learn-to-speak-German audio CD set. I've seen television ads for "Rosetta Stone" language lessons. According to the ad, Rosetta Stone products are used by military personnel to help them quickly learn a new language. Anybody here have experience with their products?

There is second witness from the Führer bunker who is still alive.

Armin Lehmann was a hitler youth courier who spend most of the time in the bunker.

He lives in the USA today where he taught at the United States Armed Forces Insitute and served as coordinator at the US AFB Tachikawa in Japan.

Later he worked for some travel and tourism company.

He was not featured in the movie. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

He also wrote a book called "Hitler's last courier"

Today he works as a peace advocate and participated in Linus Pauling's "Campaign for nuclear disarmament".

You can order the Extended Edition via amazon from Germany but it sadly has no english subtitles and there are also the shipping costs...

Hitler obviously has a little problem with a car leasing company called Ismaier.

He compares *in a nice bavarian accent* the guys from Ismaier with Mafiosi and their boss with Al Capone. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Looks like they tricked him into a expensive leasing contract. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

He "sued these gansters till the sparks flew" with the "best advocate" but only gained a "moral victory" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hitler told the judge that i cant be that" a man who has always been decent good and fair, and never did even recieved a ticket" could be trapped into such a leasing contract.

The Judge said "Oh yes this can indeed be " http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

There's also an excellent docudrama on Mussolini which was originally a tv series and which I've just bought. It's spread over 3 dvd's of which the last could be considered to be the untergang Italian style. And George C. Scott fits the role of Mussolini very well ito appearance at least.

Just for a "compass check" here the stats on the American Version I own:

- 155 minutes (minuten) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif "my gasthaus deutsch"
- Dolby 5.1 with English subtitles
- Making of Downfall featurette
- Cast and Crew interviews
- Director Commentary

My http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif goes out to Corinna Harfouch. Although she plays on cold icy B i t c h. She is a very alluring woman for her age. She's slightly older than me in real life. CELEON should appreciate that fact that she was also an East German before. Google her and she looks very different in real life.

Which reminds me, we should start a non english speaking actresses topic. I am truly impressed with many of these german actors and actresses that I watch in these foreign (to me) films.

JULIA JENTSCH who played Sophie Scholl in "Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage (2006)", was truly impressive. That was also riveting drama for those who haven't seen this film. She also played a small role in "Downfall" as one of the other secretaries applying for the job.

Still need to see "The Lives of Others" about CELEON's recent past government and I have "Before the Fall" to watch on my shelf.

If this is going to be a running topic then we should limit the actress or actor from having broken into the mainstream of English speaking films.

Diane Kruger...You're out http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif ... and not only for a being a good looking, bad actress.

In my collection I found the three pictures of German girls, they are not actresses but they could have been !

So if you have any pictures post them here, it is important to know how looked the girls and wives of our brave submariners.
