View Full Version : How NOT to lose sight

I need your advice on this. I lose sight of my enemy all the time. I lose it when facing the ground and when it gets so far away from me it becomes a dot. I have a very hard time seeing the dots in the sky, but when the dots are below me, it gets even worse! You can imagine the consequences of this. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I like to play without padlocking, icons and externals (don't have a trackir for nothing). How do you do it? Is there anyway to make the dots more visible, maybe graphics settings?

the following helped me a little:

- reduce landscape details/light effects, to be shure it runs as smooth as possible
- put object light effects to maximum, helps to distinguish planes against ground
- adjust graphic cards settings using a greyscale,
especially the gamma settings
- ad a little sharpening in the graphic cards settings

Drop to 640x480 resolution. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It works. The Dots become Flying BasketBalls (tm).

If you are flying at high resolutions, a partial Dot fix is setting Dotrange to the maximum 25km. The Dots appear somewhat darker, but even small fighter aircraft Dots can then be seen out to maybe 10-12km against the white sky just above the horizon. So, you gain some Dot visibility, but may lose some realism seeing small aircraft at Extreme distances.

The Dots were made strictly for 1024x768 alone, and at this resolution they work well. At higher resolutions, they decrease in visibility very fast with increasing resolution (faster than one would expect). At lower resolutions, the Dots become Flying BasketBalls (tm). The sinhq Admin, dude163, is one of a very few Honest players who will admit dropping to 800x600 resolution when in competitive online play mood. More bizzare, we find even the latest 500$ X800-6800 Ultra-Pro beta test video cards are being used at Ultra-Low resolutions, to see Dots.

~~> There is something you can do. Read this through and its not as bad as it sounds at first. Use the mp_dotrange command in ChatMode to setup quick alias key and set all text icons to .01 range (range numbers are *kilometers*) -- except the Range range (confused? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif). Set Range range to maybe 5km range, neutral Black text colour, then the Range numbers begin to appear at 4km or less, fading in to solid black at 3km. Then, use the Toggle Icon key command you have mapped to turn off the 4km Range icon, but have this key mapped to joystick button so you can turn it on fast during teh dogfight, then turn it off when you see the target again. This command is a Cycle, cycling through 4 icon styles, so you must use this command 3 times to turn off after you turn them on. That's why I reccomend mapping to joystick button. Set "dot" to 25km.

Another issue, not related to Dots, is the Vanishing LOD Problem. This is when the small aircraft, not yet far away to be a Dot, is lost among the forest below--even at fairly close range. You can vastly brighten aircraft skins in a good photo/paint program. For experiment, Save to new skin and keep original, although you can reverse-brigthen new skin back to original. This helps alot, and I have only begun to experiment with using this, although I noticed it last year when setting up a white Void skin on a summer map by accident. See if it works.

Generally, these Fixes are not needed as much on Winter maps -- mainly the Summer maps.

****Edits...so many posting mistakes...here is the mp_dotrange command in my "rcu" file....

@alias q mp_dotrange COLOR .01 DOT 25 RANGE 5.0 TYPE .01 ID .01 NAME .01

So, just start game, and in mission, goto Chat Mode and type "q" (then press ENTER) to see the mp_dotrange settings take effect. The "q" is capital sensitive. Change "q" to "Q" if you wish, or use both...

Hey thks LEXX luthor i will try that idea of droping the resolution next time i am on line http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I fly with a ATI card and when i start the game the the game is darker than my desk top and it makes the planes very hard to see so i set thur the cards gamma settings to have a lighter screen and can see planes better.

Hummmmmmm shooting basketballs! Maybe i can hit one better than trying for planes http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Hey, Lexx I hope you had the expressed, written consent of the National Basketball Association
when you mentioned those flying basketballs!!
Do you want to get into the same kind of trouble Ubi got into with Northrup/Jerks/Grumman???? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is interesting - I also lose anemy a/c over forests. How do you change the gamma for IL2 without altering your standard desktop seetings. I assume there's a editable/selectable profile tool lurking somewhere - I just don't know where.
