View Full Version : yak 3...cannon or machine guns?

I'm currently trying to be less crap with the yak 3. I fly the yak 3P with the 3 cannons because I reason that the explosive shells in the cannon do more damage, and I prefer to fire all guns at once, not chop and change from cannon to machine guns ( on a previous post I was advised not to use cannon and machine guns together.) I'm practising against bombers as I find their defensive guns a challenge to avoid. and they take quite a bit of bringing down which encourages me to be more accurate. I was wondering if my reasoning re cannons is sound or is there a reason for choosing the other variant of yak 3 with the machine guns? Incidentally I read somewhere that the cannon armed Yak was actually slightly lighter than the machine gun carrying one.

Practise with the Yak 3, not the 3P. Since the 3 doesn't have quite as much firepower it will teach you to place your shots well.

Also you will find that the yak 3 has more than enough firepower to handle bombers if you fly smart.

What are you practicing for? If you will eventually want to go up against fighters (which is what the Yak3 is for) then you should be doing that now. Start with friendly fighters and teach yourself when to hold and when to let loose your precious ammo.

Another tip for gunnery practice: Set ammo to unlimited. This will relax you considerably since you can take your time and missing shots won't trip you up. I'd bet you'll start hitting more accurately.

Then, switch ammo back to limited and set up missions against enemy fighters.

I disagree with HayateAce, practicing against bombers can be very valuable as they give you a larger target to focus on...but you need to learn to group and concentrate your shots.

I'd stay away from the Yak-3P until you can properly appreciate its firepower. Do half of your practice with the standard Yak-3 and the other half with the Yak-3P.

Attacks against bombers should be done using deflection shots and never from directly behind. Make sure you're avoiding their firepower by making yourself a difficult target to hit. Fancy maneuvers really won't help...solid flying, deflection shooting, and using the angles against them are the best options.

Once you start to consistently land hits on the target with the Yak-3, try the Yak-3P and realize how a full on burst from the 3P will now totally rip the target to shreds. Aim and target as if you didn't have the firepower...it makes a huge difference.

Then you should work your way up to fighters...but if the plan is to practice the plane and you want to learn it through and through then you should work your way up from slow and easy to hit to small and hard to hit.

I tend to go for short bursts with all guns.

In some planes (the 109E comes to mind) I can see the need for not using the MGs and cannons together. You have a ton of 7.62mm ammo and very little 20mm ammo, so you want to be sure that your shots are going to hit with those 20mm cannon, you can use the 7.62s to sight in the target, and then blast away with the cannon.

But with the Yaks, it seems almost better to use all of your weapons in a short burst when you have a sure shot. You can stretch out the ammo load on the Yak with some patience and proper use of the gun sight and convergence.

Go with what works for you, though.

Depending on style/server/settings etc... it is generally better to fire all in short bursts and preferably hit with (at least) one of those bursts.

On realistic servers I always go for prolonged initial burst (all guns), it is always invaluable when you cripple/destroy your target on first pass.

DK, you don't happen to have one of those, do you?

I agree that you can get bombers even with the regular Yak-3 but you can't get a lot of them. If they are escorted, I try to get at least one and then go for a fighter or two to take some heat off of my buddies. If you use the 3P you might be able to get 3 or 4 bombers and maybe a fighter, especially if you aim for the bomber's engines and wing roots. And that's with short bursts with all cannons at once. I happen to be flying a 3P now in an offline campaign. I average 2 kills per sortie, with 6 kills being my best sortie.

I recommend it.
It's a good book about subject especially if you didn't have previous experiences with reading about this airplane in combat. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
And yes... aircraft profiles are sweet http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif.

Maybe you want something you gotta get more hits with for better practice?

In any case for gunnery practice you might want to set Arcade=1 in conf.ini. It shows white dots where you hit, confirming how many and
where.

Other thing is to make a track especially when you are having problems. Play back using view and speed control to allow pause when your
plane fires (you see your sight picture and you watched how the nose is moving and where The Ball is) then move POV to the target plane
and see how close the tracers come that miss. Arcade=1 in track playback shows direction arrows for all your hits and shell fragments.
Just because the arrow goes through the plane, it is only direction, the shot may not have gone through.

The feedback those two ways should speed your progress in gunnery practice.
