There's a bunch of guys in Australia currently looking for a spitfire that was buried in it's delivery crate soon after the war ended. This will be some coup if there's any truth to the original story. Here's a link to an article that appeared in the Bulletin magazine a few weeks back...

...and to follow up here's one for the organization that's doing the looking and filming for the documentary.

I for one have my fingers crossed that they can come up with the goods. There can't be too many unused Spitfires left just lying around!

I know of about two hundred American army despatch-rider's motorcycles buried in a field outside Newton Abbot in the SW UK. Harleys and Indians mostly. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Unfortunately they are now lying under a 'big shed' type shopping complex. I've heard that there are quite strict rules, still in force, about unearthing these kind of 'treasure troves' of unwanted surplus. In short, it ain't legal and carries quite severe penalties.

The Air Force of the Republic of Indonesia has, I was told many moons ago, lots of mint condition crated P-51s that went their way shortly after the war.

Most, if not all, of the Indonesian P-51s were originally supplied to the ML-KNIL (P-51Ds and P-51Ks), which was disbanded in 1950. The P-51s WERE new when the ML received them in 1945, but most definitely were NOT new when handed over in 1950...........

They can be found in one of those huge warehouses...you know the kind that the Ark of the Covenant wound up in at the end of the first Indiana Jones. They may never be seen again.

I think I've read somwhere that a hangar was positioned under level ground somewhere in Germany during the late stages of the war, and that it contained several planes, mostly Me-410, as the war ended. After the war, the runway was stretched, and the hangar was buried under the runway with the planes still inside. Has anyone ever heard or read something that can confirm this?

On the other hand, I've seen pictures of RN crews dumping brand new Seafires (or Spitfires) over the rails of an escort-carrier. They were en route for delivery in the Far East as the war ended, and they were just thrown over board when they suddenly were no longer needed.

The only thing i heard about in germany was that they founds a ammo dump underneth the berlin airport a few years ago,

Ive had a few fantasy's about being on holiday in germany, hiking near the "eagles nest" and finding a door behind some bushes that leads to a 60,000 square foot hanger built into the side of the mountain that has a mish mash of 410's 210's 109/190 234's 262's and all of them conviently vacumed packed in opaque heavey guage plastic(so none of the ruber dry rotted) and of course the rest turns into a james bond type chase with my girlfriend (who happens tobe a raptor pilot) are screaming across the tree tops heading for french airpace (in 262's) before the germans pick us up on radar....I think you know how the rest of the story go's.... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I believe I heard a similar rumor that there are crated WWII Harleys buried at F.E. Warren AFB in Wyoming. But then again, the guy I heard it from had been stationed there and in England before that so maybe I have the location he told me confused. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
