This will be Huge. It should be Mod friendly -- that means maps too, so we can expect all the big 2 and even 4 engine Flyable bombers from the community. I am not sure if this will support playable gunner stations, that would be sweet. Being an updated StrikeFighters engine (I think), it should install and run as smoothly on Windows computers as FB/PF (in contrast to Microsoft sim http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).

A really good scaleable WWI sim would be a VERY welcome addition to my HD. Maybe someone could proprietarily use the FB engine and model the planes for insertion. Seems the easiest way to me, but with as closely as 1:C guards their children, I expect that would never happen.

yeah, i have Empires Flying corps gold on my hd, but its been a long time since i flew it...was a pretty good sim, but the bugs it had never got fixed to my knowlegde, but there werent that many anyway.wasnt open to mods as far as i know...this will be pretty interesting sicne the new one will be.

as long as its not infected by any MS unfinished stuff, it ought to work pretty nicely.

This one looks very cool indeed.
I have a soft spot for WW1 sims as I first got into them with "Knights of the Sky" on my old Amiga 500. (Heh, even further back with "Wings" on Comodore 64, but that wasnt really a sim)
I followed that up with Flying Corps and Red Baron 3D on the PC.
Im no longer able to run Flying Corps (even purchased the Gold version) but I couldnt get my newer joystick to calibrate, and now with faster systems it wont load at all http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
But I still have RB3D on my drive and still regularly take the DVII out for a spin.
The campaign was, and still is awesome.
RB3D is the only one that I have never uninstalled, and has always been one of the first to be installed when I have upgraded.

I read about him long ago but I kind of forget the details, wasnt he the baloon buster that always go out hunting for the enemy alone and then got killed in his last mission?

I'll keep watching this project's progress. Seems very promising.

Frank Luke was from Arizona, and there's a bronze statue of him in front of the state Capitol there, or was.

He was a loner with a bad temper, but did have one friend. That friend covered his tail on Frank's dangerous ballon-busting missions. They'd hit and get out.

Luke's reckless tactics quickly caught up with them. The friend got killed and Luke blamed himself. He took off against orders and left a message to watch three balloons near some French village, which he named. He shot down at least two, as I recall. I think it was all three.

His plane was badly shot up and Luke was wounded. He could have surrendered and survived. Instead, he drew pistols and fought off a company of Germans for a couple of hours, killing several before they finally just shot him. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

He was the USA's second-highest ranking ace, in a career that lasted less than a month at the front, as I recall.

Lets hope this one makes it to the finnish line.

Ehh... biplanes need shadows. Self shading. Dark spots. Self-shading is a common whiz-bang feature today, but I've never seen it used in a flight sim...why not?

Everytime I see a new WWI sim I think the same thing. The planes look flat and cartoony; they just don't look real at all, no matter how detailed the model. I never get this feeling with monoplanes, and I'm very certain that biplanes look wrong because the upper wing and its support struts and wires don't cast any shadows on the lower wing.

Well, this was a pointless rant. I guess I might be kind of exited about a new WWI sim, but I don't know anything about this.

TK (Of Strike Fighters and EAW Fame) is using a modified strike fighters engine. Thus it will be a "light" sim. Frankly given the fact we have little hard data on planes of that era using the Strike Fighters engine is fine with me.

what ever happened to that one that got canceled? I wonder if any companies that can buy the engine and models, someone like shockwave.

I was psyched about it for along time and it looked very good being an old baron 3d fan.

This game engine would make a great wwi sim, slow planes, blimps docking system of the tb3 etc makes the small maps seem bigger and the above 3000m alt haze circle not possible.

good looking planes don't make a flight sim. Are there any informations about realistic flight models, damage model, engine management (rotaries only with off / full throttle; magneto switches, leaning with effects to the engine; foul plugs etc.)and will there be a campaign with immersion?

Here is a quote off the ThirdWire forum on this WW-1 sim from the developer ..... TK "Ace"

" Okay, quick answers to some of the questions raised here, before we move on to post another set of screenshots

Will this be "more ike IL-2 & PF"? Nope.

Will wee see Metric as alternative to English units? Yes.

Any planned improvements on the terrain? Nothing major, we'll have a smaller map, which means more details up close. No boxes for forest are planned.

Will it have 6DOF support for TrackIR? ... this is still is under consideration, we'd like to put some limited support for it - use it for zooming in/out and do minor position changes, but we won't have the view point moving too far (as our cockpits are built with single view point in mind and it wont' look quite right if you move too far from it... like all textures are painted with false prespective to add more 3d look, non-visible faces are often not built, etc etc).

Trenchs, vickers, and observation balloons? Yes

Sopwith family (Camel, Pup, Triplane) of planes? Unfortunately, no. Like I said before, we have limited resources and the list of planes we can include in the initial box are fairly short for this one. There are plans to include them in one of the sequels, tho... gotta leave something out if you plan for more than one titles

What are we going to call this? We have a few working titles, the final name will be decided upon with a publisher.

Engine has been upgraded to run confortably with higher poly counts? Not really, but we're shooting for slightly higher min system requirement. All the models you see so far are around 8K polys, with 5 or 6 512x512 texture maps, so small incremental increase from SFP1 models. I do think our modellers have gotten better, tho

Tiger Moth model within the timescale? Not really, isn't Tiger Moth 1930s? This title will focus only on the last half of 1918 (Jul-Nov 1918). Our long-term plan is to have follow on titles that cover different years. Of course, this doesn't mean you can't mod it to include other eras

Thanks, and new set of screenshots coming up tomorrow."

i welcome a WWI flight sim...or a WW2 tank sim...anything to get me away from punks in spits and La7s

would a WW1 flight sim have online behavior that at least slighty resembles even a fraction of the honour and chivalry that so many of us have read about in this era?

my guess is no, especially once the ppl get thier hands on spads, DVIIs and SE5as, the "uber" types

Eddie Rickenbacker was the no.1 US ace followed by Bill Lambert.
This picture shows Rickenbacker, Doug Cambell and Ken Marr ( CO of the 94th Aero ).

Oh, so you mean "it should be practically unplayable online" - sorta like all the people you see on Hyperlobby with SF and WOV....not

Correct. Neither Oleg (BoB) or ThirdWire have any financial incentive to create a "free" internet dogfight fps shooter game. For the same reason, Oleg posted at sukhoi.ru that he will eventually be going Pay~to~Play for BoB structured Online War.

Good Topic. What are the WW1 Noob planes? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I want to see a Bristol Bulldog. I am hoping the community could expand this to 1930s biplanes and high speed jets - er - I meant monoplanes. In the 1930s, monoplanes played much the same role as German jets in 1944-1945. I hope to see the day when Daiich Whines about uber Polikarpov I-17 prototype high speed monoplane "fantasy" fighter. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Well as Seafire recently found out no matter what the quality of the product the game play is only as good as the people you 'choose' to play it with. I quite look forward to this game And if we could get some Zepplins ect into it I would be stoked.

Just to be a little fussy. A common error with WWI airplane modelling is the color of the tires. All the screen shots had black tires. In WWI the tires were various shades of grey with some even pink!
From one source I had heard that both Rickenbacker and Luke were of German ancestry and had their names Americanized, from Reichenbacher and Luchs, respectively. There was so much of an anti-German mania that the Secret Service kept an eye on both of them to watch for un-American attitudes. A big waste of time in both cases.
I am also an old fan of RB3D. That campaign game keeped me interested all the time.
