View Full Version : Someting for the New Guys: Earn 100% Renown

I first explained this a while back. Since then, many new Kaleuns have come aboard and may not have learned how to edit certain game files to customize their game experience.

SH3, in its original format relies upon renown as the basis of its merit system. Renown is earned by destroying enemy ships and planes and completing patrol requirements. With sufficient renown you may be promoted, make upgrades to your sub, bring aboard better trained crew, purchase torpedoes and advance to newer subs. If you sink a lot of enemy shipping you will earn a lot of renown. Seems pretty straight forward.

The problem is that if you play at lower difficulty percentages, it can take a long time to earn sufficient renown to get the men and equipment you want. At 100% difficulty, you earn the maximum amount of renown for your accomplishments. At less than 100% difficulty, you earn less renown. The lower the difficulty settings, the less you earn.

There are many players here who are quite capable of playing the game at 100%. The problem is that in order to play at 100% you cannot use certain features, such as external views. You can play at 100% but your ability to take screenshots will be limited to only what you can see through the scope or from the bridge view. The idea behind this is to prevent you from using such features to cheat in a manner which was not possible in real life. While it succeeds in stopping you from exploiting these features, it also takes away some of the fun of the game and the awesome eye candy this game provides. You can play without using such features to "cheat" but the game doesn't give you the option to be able to have these features and not cheat.

Another problem with playing at less than 100% is that the A.I. seems to give you less than 100% of an effort. In other words, if you play at 50%, the computer will not try as hard as if you were playing at 100%. It has never been answered definitively, but some of us believe that at 100% the Allied escorts have limited numbers of depth charges, whereas at lesser settings they seem to have an unlimited number of depth charges.

Would you like to be able to earn the same amount of renown at a lesser setting than you would if you played at 100%? Would you like to be able to use external views to take screenshots and not take a renown hit? If so, then all you have to do is carefully follow my advice as detailed below.

The file we need to work on is called GameplaySettings.cfg, which, if you used the default installation is found in the Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\cfg folder. Scroll down to the section [RealismPercentage]. There, each line is a value for the patrol realism settings and has a number at the end of each line which is used to determine that line's value toward the patrol realism percentage. The first line is for the batteries. If you play using limited batteries, that counts as 5% toward the patrol realism or difficulty setting. If you total up the values for all of the lines in that section, they add up to 100. Every option that you deselect removes that number from 100. If you use all lines except for manual targeting, your patrol difficulty will be 85%.

All you have to do is make the value for each option you wish to use a zero and then add that line's value to another line for an option that you do not use. It doesn't matter where you add that value, as long as for each line you make a zero you add that value to another line. Be careful to make sure that the lines all add up exactly to 100 when you are done, or it will not work.

Example: If you wish to use automatic targeting, you change the line "Manual Targeting System Realism Percentage=15" to read a "0" at the end, and add that 15 to another line for an option you will not deselect at the patrol screen. In other words, if you play with limited compressed air [checked at the patrol settings screen] you could add that 15 there, so that the line for compressed air would now read 16 instead of 1.

If you want to use the external view, then you would edit the line "No External View Realism Percentage=6" to have a "0" at the end and then add 6 to another line. If you play with realistic batteries, then you could add the 6 to the line "Limited Batteries Realism Percentage=5" so that it would now read 11 at the end.

It's very easy to do this. Just make sure that for every line you make a zero to add its value to another line. When you go to your patrol options screen you will now be able to customize your patrol to use the features you changed and you will not be penalized. After selecting your options, it should read 100% for your difficulty setting. From now on, you will earn renown as if you were playing at 100%.

The only thing I ask is that if you use this method, be honest with yourself and your fellow Kaleuns. Try not to use your external view to take a look at that destroyer as it passes overheard to see when it drops its depth charges. A real life Kaleun couldn't do it. If you edit your files this way and you have a 100K patrol, don't go to the 100K Club and say you did it at 100%.

By Grapthor's Hammer K61, do you know there is a Maths Black Hole and I live in it?

I can't hit the side of a BB @ 1000 paces with anything but a homer by way of calculations. Even then I can miss. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

That is with my maths-clued-up university daughter doing the sums. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/compsmash.gif

I don't have enough fingers and toes. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif to those who can do it!

Another way:

FRree Renown
To have the needed amount of renown to get the upgrades to your sub or to change your U-boat model use the following procedure:

You have to be in the base after a mission for this cheat to work.
Note: This procedure involves editing a game file; create a backup copy of the file before proceeding.
Enter the "\sh3\data\cfg\careers\" folder. Select the name of the folder that is the same as the career that you are using.
Use a text editor to edit the file Patrols_0.cfg.
Scroll down to your last mission details and change the amount of DeltaRenown that you got paid.
example (DeltaRenown=498.750000 Change to DeltaRenown=6500.750000)
Save the file and start the game.
You can now buy what you like in the game.

Forget the renown, lower the cost of everything and one patrol will get you all the upgrades and the next will have you ready for a XXI!
The way SH3 works Gates and Buffet would have the good boats and Prein and Kretschmer would be in row boats with sling shots.
I have decided I am the favorite son of the Kriegsmarine and get the best for showing up!
With little to spend my renown on I did up the XXI to 5,000. Bascically, If I can even get to where one is available I will be sure I can afford it.
The only thing I raised the price of was T-4 and T-5 homi's to 500 and 600 each.
I may even go through and make everything 10! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Oh yeah, I'm aware that there are more ways than this to fiddle with renown. I wrote this for the guys who didn't want to mess about with all the individual ship files. But if you know what you are doing, there's more than one way to skin the cat, as they say.

I just downloaded, but haven't yet installed, the Grey Wolves mod, which if I am correct no longer uses renown but tonnage. Tonnage seems the better way. I've always thought of renown as a rather esoteric and arbitrary thing. You earn fame for your exploits, then you mathematically lose it when you "spend" it. Prien didn't become less of an ace after he got his Knight's Cross. Other famous aces got their medals, promotions and new commands but were still renowned and held their ranks when they "cashed in" their renown, if you get what I am saying.

What I did was add to my renown any that was subtracted by making purchases. Maybe it was cheating, but once a famous Kaleun, there's no going back for me.

I reduced the price of everything, gave myslef more renown (depending on the year) to start with and redid my crew cfg so I had more what I wanted. I also redid all the torpedo load outs to be as I have been switching them to at the start of each mission.
I also made it so the entire crew gets a war patrol badge after one patrol because they did.
Of course I also increased the escorts to as many as 12 to 15 later with all veterans and have added new formations around the bases I use in 44 (St Nazaire and Bergen. I even added a trawler out of Scalloway (not on the map but I have been there) sending it from Shetland deep into a Norwegian Fiord to honor the Norwegian restance "Shetland Bus"
I also added HMS Hood's sortie into the central North Sea in Oct 39 when whe received a bomb hit (Hope you have gotten Warhunter's HMS Hood it is the finest model done to date!)
