My friend Ed was in the signal corps in the U.S. Army in WWII. He ended up in Italy and traded some american stockings for this watch while there.
He also met his wife there and an old man who started training him in watchmaking. After the war he went to school in Switzerland and in the U.S. for watchmaking and was a jeweler in my hometown from the late forties through the seventies.
Even after he sold his shop he worked on watches in his basement for whoever needed it, and he took me under his wing and showed me how to work on watches. We used to sit in his basement at the bench working and he would talk the whole time about WWII and the rest of his life, including how he got this watch and how when he could take it apart and put it back together, he knew he was good enough to start working on other peoples watches.
None of his kids wanted this watch so he let me have it shortly before he kicked the bucket last year. Another dead-mans piece of junk I ended up with. It happens more and more often the older you get...........
