View Full Version : OT - A Star Wars Sim, Wouldn't that be great?

I was just thinking wouldn't it be awesome if Lucasarts hired Maddox Games to make a Star Wars simulation, realistic with working guages, and damage models... man I'd love to punch a hole through a Tie-Fighter's solar panels.

but your green lasers are already in the sim! Fly I-16 dude!

It'll probably never happen. They did make the X-wing series of games a while back like TIEFighter, Xwing vs TieFighter, and X-wing Alliance; but that was it.. they never continued from there.

LucasArts figures their best bet for gaming is for game-consoles (eek, i hate that word) and are veering away from PC gaming, somewhat. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

TIE Fighter ... my first StarWars game. I loved it ... TIE Defender, Missile Boat ... I wish someone would do such a brilliant game again - this time with accurate physics and of course modern graphics.

I think these guys (http://www.xwaupgrade.com/) are still around. I even got some of their stuff to work with the direct3d versions of X-Wing and Tie Fighter a while back.

If you have X-Wing Alliance and haven't heard of this, you're in for a treat.

As mentioned there are already made games of the Star Wars scenario. If you would like something with a bit of realism, Star Wars is not a good idea. Everything is unreal, from sounds in space to the WWI/WWIIish movements of the fighters.

Elite and spinoffs have realism in movements.

But they don't have the soul like Star Wars http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

X-Wing was great, and TIE-Fighter was even better.

X-Wing: Alliance was real fun and technically impecable -for its times. Besides, it included a nice multiplayer. It still looks good, IMHO.

A pity they don't make a revamped version of this stuff, but they're just interested in console arcades... With the exception of some decent FPS and the Knights of the Old Republic series -good stuff, although the last one needs a technical patch desperately- everything has been a downhill progression to kid entertainment.

My first star wars game was Rebel Assault, next was X-wing, then of course, Tie Fighter, X-Wing vs. Tie fighter, etc.... I loved them all. But now I have this sim and the others get boring quickly.

I loved the x-wing series, the original tie fighter was one of the best games over, technically and funwise. I agree that xwing alliance still looks good after all these years.
Totally games is still around, they even included an xwing and a tie in secret weapons of the luftwaffe a couple of years ago.
Lucas released an expansion for their massive mp game were you can pilot ships the old way, but for the screenshots, it doesn't seem like the totally games way (energy, etc)...
They simply don't do another one because lucas has no demand for it, it's funny to think that if there was a TIE Fighter 2 the target public that would buy it would be in the late 20's at least... (i was 12 when I got tie in disks).

But hey, there's a new space game by 1C

Parkan II, ahead in the article there are more screenshots.

The Rebel spacecraft would surely be heavily undermodelled.

Accurate physics in a fantasy film? hmmm...

Anyway I wasn`t much for X-wing, but I snapped it up when you could fly a TIE fighter! Nothing like fighting for old Darthy boy! Sure, a `simulation` , a serious `realistic` Star Wars fighter game in the image of IL2/PF would be wonderful. And I mean serious, not arcade.

Imagine starting the engine/s, watching the lights come on, then getting the go-ahead and ejecting into the turmoil of fighter space combat. You`d have to watch your weapons use, fuel, targeting objectives, etc.

I`d buy it.

i always thought star wars as a sim would be kinda hokie. the tech just has a made up for the moment half ***ed feel to it. now a sim set in the bablon 5 setting would be kick a$$ IMO. starfury's rock.

I can imagine the whining: "Oh no mr. Maddox, you got it all wrong, X-wings are supposed to have better cannons. More powerfull, less dispersion and better ROF. Als, I think it was faster in real life" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Can you imagine that? I do http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/34.gif

Yes, the problem is that adding realism to Star Wars would completely and totally change it. The only thing you would have left is the spacecraft graphical models. Even those would need some tweaking. And, while I enjoy space simulators with realistic physics, I think that the people requesting a Star Wars game with realistic physics would be greatly disappointed if one were made.

I mean, the lightsaber itself, arguably the most important part of Star Wars, is a hugely unrealistic concept. It can't be done. Neither can the "lasers," for that matter.

try rogue squadron on Nintendo Gamecube, Brilliant graphics and you get to blow up the Death Star MKII (to do this I sat there for 3 hours re-trying again and again until I did it.

When I was talking about "realism" I meant correct axis on the joystick (XWA and before had that one mixed up), believable damage model without "hitpoints" and maybe some more options dealing with the ship itself (emergency procedures, linking of torpedo fire between torpedo-armed snubfighters, ...).

I loved Tie Fighter! Since it was not the first one of the series (played all of them) i liked it most. I like playing for the dark side (see my nick http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif )
The X-Wing series had a good long time motivation. Got Tie-Fighter to run on my system some time ago but the grafics are now so outdated that i couldn't get me to play more than 3 missions.

A remake would be very desireable.

Hi,

It shouldn't be too hard at all. The entire physics engine and models already exist - in PF. All they need to do is to change the 3D models and use the sky colouring from above 6000m http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Dux, check this: http://xwaupgrade.com/

For those of you who want a realistic physics model; you have no ****ing clue what you are asking for. There is NO way you could do anything even REMOTELY cinematic with such a model.

This is a pretty decent game out with Matrix games called Starshatter that does a lot of what you guys are asking for. There was even some work being done for a B5 mod and a Star Wars mod...

This looks like pretty cool stuff mate thanks for the heads up.

I have been looking for a means to scratch my mechwarrior itch for some time now and if what this guy promises with his game engine gets close it could be the solution I have been looking for either way I will check it out when I get home.

Thanks again

The trouble with any decent Star Wars fighter sim is that they would have to dumb it down so that 9 yr olds can play it, in other words, no real challenge. X-Box, whatever, just arcade rubbish.

Too bad too. I really liked X-Wing/TIE fighter and thought one day that a better version would come out.

I use to play tiefighter and later xwing vs tiefighter. But I had the most fun with the wing commander series. I'd like to see some continuation on that. Also enjoyed privateer.
