I can play it on my computer pretty good and it´s just a 2.26Ghz with an Ati 9800 Pro and 1 gig memory.

It would help if you posted your PC stats. But my PC has only a 1.7Ghz CPU, but 1GB RAM and nVidia 6800 and it runs pretty good.

Great game, well worth getting.

SH3 is a Great game with a lot of mod's from the sub community. You might want to look into SH4 also which is the Pacific side of WWII.

Check out Subsim... Link: http://www.subsim.com/index.php

Have IL-2, SH-3 and SH-4 and all work fine on my PC which is still ye-olde-worlde AGP card based not one of those new fangled PCI-Express dual core.

I reckon you'd be fine if you can get 30-40 in IL-2.

Get it - you won't be disappointed!

This game is so immersive (pardon the pun). I lost a good six months to SH3 in standard vanilla format and probably another 6 months with it modded with grey wolves.

I strongly recommend that if you do get it download the Grey Wolves mod - it adds so much more to the game, more ports - more radio messages to much to mention!

It is possibly one of the most tense games you will play - the reward when you sneak into an allied convoy and let rip with your tin fish is oooooh so satisfying and trying to escape while being pinged by sonar from closing allied destroyers is truly terrifying.

I wrote up an After Action Report (in narrative form with screengrabs) for the SH3 forum - it'll give you a taste of what you can expect:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/98...101050674#9101050674 (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/857101043/m/9801069574?r=9101050674#9101050674)

The most fun is playing it on full realism and working ot your own torpedo solutions - however to start with I recommend letting your crew do some of the donkey work (as in real life!)

Remember, Run Silent, Run Deep...

SH3 runs pretty good even on low end PCs. It is definitely worth the few bucks you pay for it now and there are some really great mods for the game.

Grey Wolves is a gigantic mod with new ships, weapons, harbors, very good radio traffic, new navigation tools, corrected fleet data and routes, etc.

SH4 is a lot more hardware demanding and has a lot more bugs. Patch 1.3 eliminates a great deal of them, but some of them really spoil the fun. IMHO SH4 is the best example why I'd rather wait another 6 or 12 month for BoB instead of buying an unfinished product.

I am running IL2-46, SH3 with GWX expansion and SH4 on my "old" rig- AMD Athlon XP2500+, Albatron KX600Pro MB, 1.5 GB DDR-400 RAM, 80 GB IDE HDD and NVidia 6200 vid card- no problems apart from the occasional stutter or screen freeze on "heavy" missions on IL2-46. So if you have a rig with similar specs, you should be OK with SH3. Don't bother with the old Grey Wolves (GW) mod though- get its successor, Grey Wolves Expansion (GWX)!!!!!!!!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

VF-17_BOOM... It's with one of the early rapid fire gun mod's. LoL

Turns that deck gun into a semi automatic.

I keep it handy with a quick patch for surface duck hunting those convoys. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If your PC can run IL2 at a decent standard then it will have no trouble with the SH series.

SH3 is very good but it takes patience. Also the mods out there are excellent. I normally go to www.subsim.com (http://www.subsim.com)

Recommended. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Just don't look at the manual because some of the stuff in there was never implemented http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Runs slightly stuttery on 512 mb memory and graphics card radeon 9800pro in convoys.

Buy it you won't regret it. You might regret the loss of many hours in the real world (or not as the case may be http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).

Just make sure to download the free mod GWX.

Some links here at the excellent subsim:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=102096

Makes it a whole new game - more realistic and yes you guessed it, harder!

I got a first generation AMD64 with a gig and it runs fine...

+1 on the Grey Wolf Mod it's a must (can't beat the price...Free! But it is a rather large download)

Beware of olfactory hallucination's...(On some occasion's I swear I can smell the ocean) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You will loose many hours to this game...(escaping the destroyers is almost MORE fun then blowing stuff up)

Go for it! Much fun!

It will run ok.Even low end graphics are beatiful.

But be warned that you won`t get much help if you get CDTs or any other kind of trouble. My game for example never accepted any mods.CDTs ever 5 minutes or so.No help from sh3 community.

I might have to find this until I upgrade...

SH4 runs like a dachshund on wet tiles on my computer. Not to mention my copy is all buggered up and won't patch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Apparently, when they say "Imported" on E-Bay, sometimes it's actually true. 'Tis playable, but only from the CIC/Map room, which sucks a lot of the fun out... (And makes torpedo shots kinda hard)

All right then I think I'll get sh3, I hear about sh4 but it seems more people prefer sh3 or well that's what I've gathered from the internet over the last week.It seemed like the only thing people liked about sh4 was the lifeboats. Thanks guys, O and that grey wolf thing is free right? And what side(s) can you play on in sh3 ,is it just u-boats?

07-27-2007, 06:56 PM
GW mod is a free realism mod.It also makes the game harder.Enemy ships are smarter, don`t lose you so easily.Different technical parameters of uboats aswell as graphical additions are in it.

For example there are spots on the map where almost nonstop flow of cargo ships without escort.Easy to make 300.000t that way, not anymore with GW.

I agree, GW is a vast improvement over the stock game.
I also found that I encounter more convoys in GW whereas in the stock game it was most frequently lone coastal merchants or cargo ships that were easy prey. Even the early war escorts are dangerously good now.

SH3 is just German U-boats as far as I know.

I think SH3 has more of a fanbase because there are more fans of U-boats than US Pacific fleet subs. Also SH4 was quite buggy when it was released. People have had time to make mods/fixes like GreyWolves that really improve SH3. SH4 is still relatively new.

Silent Hunter 3 is from the German point of view, so you'll be riding around in U-Boats.

I think Sh4 has potential, Ubi just needs to work out all the kinks and bugs. In a couple months or so (Or year...) it could be either fantastic, or one big patched up submarine.

I have to say that the slight problems with SH4 are not a big deal. SH4 is a Great game and has a lot more potential in the future.
Both games give a very relistic view of the action in each theatre of war that they represent.
Exspecially with the multi mod's that are made available by this dedicated community of sub gamers.

I truely believe you will have a excellent time with either version you decide on buying. Keep us posted on how things go. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Two things slo:

Are you running XP? I just got SH4 as a gift and noticed that Windows 2000 isn't supported. I haven't tried installing but I'm thinking I'm out of luck - I was hoping to bypass XP complete.y and run vista when I build my new machine when BoB comes out.

slo_1_2_3... SH4 loads Very Slow it's a large game. I just recently reinstalled fresh for the 1.3 patch and even my machine took just short of a half hour to install from the disc. You might not be giving it time to load.

Also to install the 1.3 patch [you don't need the others]... "you don't want to run the game before you install the patch".

Question.... Are you installing on a CD or DVD drive? I've installed with my DVD for SHIV and CD for SHIII.

Post how you make out. I am running XP Pro.

One more thing... have you posted the problem on the Subsim forum? The people there are extremely helpful and should get you on the road if you need more help.

SH4 WILL run on W2000, I finally bought it about 2 months ago and installed it on W2000. You MUST, however, install the DirectX version included on the DVD (or a later version), plus the Mediacodecs. If you don't install these, SH4 won't start on W2000.
It has run perfectly since then- I haven't had any CTDs. Now running with patch 1.3 and TM 1.4.

Excellent ! Thanks Gerrit !

I didn't buy SH4 initially as the box only mentioned that XP and Vista were supported. However, several others on the SH3/4 forums were running SH4 on W2000 so, encouraged by this, I eventually bought it as well. Of course, I would imagine that W2000 has to be updated to at least SP4 and Update Rollup 1, but I can't imagine that anybody still on W2000 hasn't kept it up to date.
SH4 has apparently not been tested on W2000 during development, but that does not prevent it from running happily on that OS. Who knows....it might even be possible to run SH3 or 4 on W98(SE), but I haven't tested that so no guarantees.

GerritJ9... Have you seen the "Royal Netherlands Navy mod v0.2" for SHIV?

v0.2 April 13 2007

-Added Battle of the Java Sea Quick Mission

Background by Vincent P. O'Hara

You start submerged between the IJN Java convoy and the IJN escort group intercepting Doorman's ABDAFLOAT group. You can either go and sink the convoy to the north or go watch the spectacle of the battle in progress to the south. Your choice. The battle ends relatively fast but you have a good 14 hours to sink any remaining IJN ships. They dissappear after that. Dock at Surabaya to end the mission.

-Fixed a problem with some the Admiralen class ships decommision dates being on the battle day and therefor unable to initialize
-Changed Djakarta to Batavia in Campaign_LOC.mis
-Changed the initializaton dates of Jap coastal batteries in Jap_CoastalBattery.mis around Java to a later date in March/April to better represent the invasion (they spawned a good two weeks too soon).

v0.1

-Added Java class light cruisers (1 on 1 Cleveland class clone)-Added Hr. Ms. de Ruyter (she's not truly a Java class though she is derived from it, just put her in here for now)
-Added Hr. Ms. Java
-Added Hr. Ms. Sumatra
-Added Admiralen class destroyer escorts (1 on 1 Fletcher class clone)-Added Hr. Ms. Evertsen
-Added Hr. Ms. Witte de With
-Added Hr. Ms. Kortenaer
-Added Hr. Ms. Van Ghent
-Added Hr. Ms. Piet Hein
-Added Hr. Ms. Van Nes
To do:

-Model Java Class Cruisers
-Model Admiralen Class Destroyers
-Add K and O series submarines
-Rename Djakarta to Batavia (Batavia was changed to Djakarta after the japanese invasion)
-Add patrol duty waypoints for the ships
-Add ABDACOM strike force
-Add Dutch East Indies radio station
-Model C11 Fokker W floatplanes
-Add PBY Catalina Searchplanes ( I have a hunch UBI will add these)
-Add Tromp class light cruisers/flotilla leaders (thanks AntEater)
-Add Dornier Do.24 searchplanes/bombers (thanks JScones)
-Add Buffalo Brewsters fighters (thanks OddJobXL)
-Add Dutch Sailors

GerritJ9

I've seen it and downloaded it, but only used a few minor bits. The "Admiralen" class would be more properly represented by SH3's "C&D" class destroyer; both the RN's "C&D" and the Dutch "Admiralen" were direct descendants of HMS "Ambuscade" though there were considerable detail differences. At the moment I am trying to modify the "C&D" into a more proper representation of the two groups of "Admiralen" but since this is my first foray into modding it will take lots of time- I have to learn how to use 3DS Max etc etc. For the Java Sea battle, the "C&D" would be a good representation of HMS "Electra" and HMS "Encounter" while SH3's "J" class would be perfect to represent HMS "Jupiter". Other SH3 ships have been modded for SH4 so I assume that it could also be done for these ships.
Neither Hr.Ms. "Sumatra" nor Hr.Ms. "Tromp" took part in the Java Sea battle, incidentally.

I have both games. SH3, even stock, kept me interested for months. SH4 only for days. It certainly is a matter of taste, but imho SHIV has a huge problem with immersiveness and too many bugs, even after Patch 1.3. Another problem is the burn out syndrom of all major SH3 modders, which means there probably won't be a Grey Wolves like mod for SH4. So, if it is for fun and long livelty, I'd stick with SH3. SH4 has some very neat graphics, though, as I have to admit. First time I saw it I was stunned. Wished this was portable to SH3

Disagree 1.3 fixed most of the major bugs, and it is not certain it is the last. I think you underestimate the modding community, who says we won't see new people come in who will make a Grey Wolves style mod for Sh4? There are already talented new people making great stuff for SH4.

I have been playing since SHII/Destroyer Command and picked up both SHIII & SHIV when they first came out.
SHIV is slowy becoming a Great game on it own and with some of the outstanding mod's available now this can attest to the community mod's interest.

GerritJ9 ... Good Luck with the mod! Hope to see what you have made in the future. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Er......... e-mailing GWX is out of the question, I'm afraid. GWX is, all told, a download of some 800 MB!!!!!!!!!! From memory, it consists of five or six parts including the installer. Perhaps you can download it at a mate's house if your connection keeps getting interrupted?
And before I forget, you MUST install SH3 patch 1.4 BEFORE installing GWX!
