777 Studios will be using the Merlin engine used in BOB WOV. The bases of this code was originally built and used for Rowans BOB. Unfortunately the code doesn't appear to be fully understood or easy to work with.

The 777th was one of the original IL2 squadrons when I first came onboard in 2002. It was a source of inspiration to me in the early days.

Actually the resources weren't available till now to take advantage of the merlin engine. Now they are for this sim. These will be eventially shared with Bob/WOV btw.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Your right about them sharing any ideas about improving gaming with the merlin engine, and having more resources, but its been a serious chore just adding one aircraft to the code.

Most of the reason is the chief bob programmer buddye and others aren't proficient in this ability sad to say. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif New paid staff with this knowlege would go a long way to solve this and other bob problems. That is why a new sim using merlin that has additional resources is a welcome addition to bob too! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Exactly what ability is this that buddye and the others are not proficient in and how do you
know?

Cause if it's because of some hearsay rather than you've had your head and hands into the code
than I can tell you from experience that most of that kind of talk comes from people who also
haven't actually worked the code but run their mouths anyway about "must bes" based on wishful
thinking to support empty promises. It's a hoot to see those clowns get their wish and fall
straight on their faces!

The BDG are far from incompetent. There's just some tasks that are bigger than most believe.

Buddye isn't a graphics coder and he is the primary coder for bob. He has mentioned this quite often as one of the primary reasons and if you were a member you would know this has been ongoing problem. The other guys involved aren't either or have very little experiance in it. There has been a continual request for volunteers having these particular abilities at the site. You notice the word "volunteer"? don't you? That is another big problem as you may well imagine.

Now with a paid staff that includes graphics coders working on another sim with the merlin engine there is the promise of a cross dialect of info for the improvement of many of BOB graphics.

Yes, We can never have too many good combat flight sims.

Bader, Osram, Buddye and the BDG group are all very talented people dealing with a complicated code written by Rowan, and last I heard Rowan isn't giving any courses on the details of their code.

When the Merlin engine is streamlined and cleans up some of the dark holes in the Rowan code, more talented people will join the BDG group. They will need this to compete with a modded IL-2, ROF, and SOW, especially in the detailed terrain graphics aspects.

Stalker is correct, I am not a graphics C++ programmer. I take care of most of the internal code (Ai [my favorate],FM, bullets, guns, campaign [just starting], etc.). The BDG is short on help and it always has been. We work for the love of the BOBII game and it is a totally all volunteer group.

The BDG has had many C++ coders volunteer to help us. We set them up on the BOBII source and try to help them ( a significant cost, actually). Then, all the new C++ coders just fade away after they get a look at the very complex 1 million source lines of undocumented code and how very hard it is to find and work on problems and features.

I have worked on the BOBII (and BOBI code) since 2003 and I have made some progress on the BOBII AI and other significant features and problems but it has been a very hard task.

We are hopeful that the 777 guys will provide BOBII some new code and we can use it. We have provided them with all our new code as well. It seems a reasonalbe deal for the BDG but we will have to wait to see if 777 is sucessful.

I do think that BOBII is special and a quality flight sim (of course I also think IL2 is the standard and a super flight sim as well) which is why I work on it. It is so very difficult for us to get the word out so Flight Sim'ers will give BOBII a try with the new updates as PR is not our strength.

I would be curious about checking out a new PTO "flight-combat-sim"...

If you think we have a long wait for "BoB SoW"...imagine waiting for the PTO edition of the new "IL2 engine" (LOL)...I would imagine that we could easily be looking at a 2011 release (LOL).

As good as "Il2 1946" is I don't think we have ever had a "good" PTO FCS... It looks like the AAA mods have added some much needed content for the PTO, but in reality it has never really been done well. And by that I mean (in essence) the flavor and adventure of the PTO campaign has never been simulated in a FCS...

I definetly don't want to turn this a BoB2 vs il2 thread, but I must say that the Merlin engine has much more in it than the il2 one. I can't imagine how a sim could look better than a modded il2. Still, sometimes I'm bored to h*ll with the gameplay (I'm an offliner). Yesterday I had a very low level turn fight with a 109, at the edge of blacking out, high G-s for a minute or so, and I was thinking "when did I have something similar in il2? When did I see something else than infinite climbing turns, or barel rolls into split S and shaking me while blacking out?" What I want to say is that although there's a lot of work to do with BoB2, it has more potentials thanks to the Merlin engine. Creating a 3d landscape is a huge work to do, but it is "just" a work to do. I think those who fly both il2 and BoB2 will understand this.

I am hoping the guys at 777 develop a multiplayer and share the code with Bob. For me multiplayer is unimportant but apparently it is very important for others. I also hope that they develop better ways to get new aircraft into the sim then we have now. I would love to fly a JU-88 or a D0-17 on a raid. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
