View Full Version : Overheating merlin engine

When I'm flying the Hurricane Mk.I I'am experiencing overheating of the engine while flying below 100% and radiator cowling on. When overheated, the engine is damaged very quickly, so that after a few seconds of overheating the engine never produces max. power again and overheats from then on even on lower throttle percentages. Giving the fact that de merlin engine was a great succes in WW2 I think that these vulnerablity for overheating cannot be historical correct. On other liquid cooled AC I didn't find similar behaviour.

I would like to see this corrected in the next patch because the Hurricane is a delight to fly in dogfights.

You are flying a correct model that's very close - yet not the real thing.
... but only on full real settings ...

hmmm... i like the Hurricane alot in FB, but never had it overheated...

What happens the most to me, it that i get 1 hit in the propcontrols and the darned prop overspeeds out of control...i can only fight on, using the pitch controls as throttle and the "true" throttle lowered under 30%...Merlins are susceptible to damage imho, but hard to demolish...i could fight on with the pitchcontrols shot up for at least another 15 minutes...

Merlins are good engines...just keep the radiators and coolinglines damage free and keep yourself from running it at 100% power all the time...
I fly em in at 75-80% normally and fight on 90-95-100%...works fine..

Just treat them Merlins like you'd treat girl...be gentle but sometimes open up full and know the limits..

Der Tote Baron a.k.a. SK_Black_Knight....

The Hurricane MkI seems to have a much greater chance of having its engine rendered totally inoperable through overheating than the MkIIb/IIc/IIfm. The others will just degrade in performance and make grinding noises, the MkI will degrade and then seize entirely.

Are you running the mixture too lean?
Are you using prop. pitch correctly?
Please figure out if the problem is in your flying methods before you beg for a change.

cant, cant again http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
the overheat is odd on spit/hurri. takes ages to overheat but get it too cool again? nope

It happens only to the Hurricane Mk.I. I'm playing with CEM off in the Romanian offline campaign.
