View Full Version : What the clouds should look like in CoD. Video of clouds at altitude with Fighters

When it was announced 'many years ago' and I spoke with Oleg there was talk of most of the Graphics being place-holders. The Atmospheric effects were heavily mentioned, all of it being accurately generated, clouds would be huge, there was the possibility of flying through cloud layers.

Watch this video and imagine flying in that environment with your WW2 aircraft.

Watch especially as 22 seconds as the aircraft plunges through a cloud layer and comes out the other side......that is what I want! I want to believe I am in the air. I want an environment effect that says...you are in the clouds! Check out 50-seconds and look at that cloud layer as the aircraft skims over it! Another example of what the sky needs to be like. Not fluffy cotton balls!

This is an amazing video showing what clouds look like.

We all know what clouds look like. They are an integral part of the sky we fly in. They were used to evade and surprise the enemy. They need to be effective and not fluffy balls of cotton.

Can we please see something that shows us environmental effects? Rain, Snow, Cumulus, Cumuli Nimbus......just something rather than 'place holder' again!

Weather was a constant problem in England....it rains....a lot! I live here. Today is Grey, yesterday was Grey.....but above the clouds....it is Sunny. Show us something that says....CoD has Weather!

I just want to believe that so many years in development has created the 'New' IL2 and not an expansion pack!

I am not asking anyone to be on my side, I just wish to share my Opinion and back it up with video that shows what clouds look like at altitude when they exist!

Cheers, MP

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I hope something like this can be done ingame.
1 Lifelike scenery
2,Lifelike weather,
3,Realistic sounds,
4,Realistic FM's and Dm's
5,Decent dynamic campaigns etc.
If i remember correctly there's a lovely bit of cloud filming at the beginning titles of Memphis Belle.
Another nice video of clouds ,good music too . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXWQQYZ8vck http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

+1
So far, for me, this is the single biggest disapointment.
Oleg said they are redoing all the clouds from scratch and will implement them with the new weather engine some time down the road.
Is kind of sad not to have a new look at the release. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

"Sky Fighters" was a damn good looking movie. Who cares about the cheap plot, sexy Mirage 2000's and breath taking sky sceneries is enough to keep aviation nuts like us glued to the screen. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

The clouds make the sky and the flying so awesome. It sucks CoD won't have nothing new in this area from the start. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

so.. from what i was able to follow 1C has good clouds on late stage of development, however if im not mistaking they found it too much demanding for a normal rig and decided to wait.So they wont be at first but on future release YES. The same thing is for high quality trees and WEATHER SYSTEM with the last one being i game and accessible via mission editor but not optimised at a point to make the game go at 1 FPS on a high end pc.
The fact is that they need to optimise and this is a release with somethings tuned down that are waiting to be triggered in future

Sometimes when I watch the sky filled with clouds at evening, first thing I think is that my video card drivers are malfunctioning again.

Then I remember it's real life. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

But yeah, clouds like those in video, with different shapes and correct lightning would be great.

We all know that computer programming and graphics have come a long ways since the intro of Il2. I'm sure there are methods that could be used to get surprisingly close even in the existing Il2 format.
Even the water has made significant leaps with the use of some mods.
Sky's the limit really, it just depends if your computer can handle the graphics.

Yes, mostly right. The weather system was "too demanding" because it wasn't yet finished. Half the job of code is writing, the other half is optimizing and debugging.

According to Luthier, CoD WILL ship with a dynamic weather system, but it will literally slow your PC to 1 fps. It will not be activated by default, but you can set it up in the FMB if you so desire.

At some point, someone complained/lectured about the 1 fps thing, and Luthier promptly replied that not long ago, CoD itself was only running 1 fps on the same rig that now runs it at 30. (And this is why Oleg and crew use not-so-top-of-the-line machines).

If this game is a success financially, we will see dynamic weather and so much more...

Now, I'm not crossing my fingers for Sky-fighters in real-time on my PC. That's just unrealistic daydreaming http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I would need to reprogram Watson to run clouds like that.

PS - I always felt that Il-2s rendering of clouds was very good, and it feels quite life-like for what it is.

Most programmers I work with would say writing the original code is only 10% of the job and the rest optimization/debugging. Of course, I just tell them they're sloppy coders.

I can't remember (and I'm too lazy right now to search); was CoD supposed to include PhysX support? That might help a lot for rendering things like clouds and weather.
