View Full Version : Pacific Conflict - New PTO server on Hyper-Lobby

Just had to sing the praises of Air Group 51's new(ish) PTO server. Been having a blast there for a couple of weeks but it needs more visitors!

So consider this an unofficial plug...

During your next visit to HL, scroll waaay down and click on Pacific Conflict. AG-51 has populated the fun historical maps (well, the Pacific Islands map is just plain fun but the Gaudalcanal map rocks!) with plenty of targets for us ground pounders and you can fly the B-25, Betty, SBDs, D3A1...oh, and I think they have some fighters too. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Most of the maps are objective based so I've been getting plenty of practice flying between flak bursts but my tailgunner is getting bored.

Sooo...if you like full-real and you're not afraid of an old Jarhead in a big, fat, slow bomber...stop on by and visit my six (hehehe).

So far so good. The server is doing well and hosting comfortably. Good connex. Wake was just added to the map rotation. Come on by and fly the unfriendly skies of the PTO. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It's the merged install, 4.04m.

And they have Teamspeak! (which unfortunatly I can't use because of the size of my...ahem...bandwidth. But they have it!)

And I forgot to mention the gracious hosts who don't hog the allied planes, are unfailingly polite, and don't complain too much when I take my D3A1 the long way around...(sometimes ya gots ta be sneaky!) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for the plug Crash_Moses! We're glad you like the server. Of course, we're in our infancy, but very pleased the way it's going so far. We've made improvements based on suggestions from server flyers and will continue to do so.

Our current map rotation is {UPDATED: September 6th 2006}:

Ver. 4.05m

1. Okinawa Dogfight (late war, non-historical DF only - with ground/sea targets) 120 mins
2. Guadalcanal (early war, semi-historical, objectives) 120 mins
3. Operation Dragoon (late war, historical, objectives) Guadalcanal Early Map - 120 mins
4. Midway (early war, historical, objectives) 120 mins
5. Pacific Fight (late war, non-historical, objectives) Palau Map - 120 mins
6. Wake (early war, semi-historical, objectives) - 120 mins
7. Seaplane Base (late war, non-historical, objectives) - 120 mins

Thanks again for flying the server CM and for the plug! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I tried it tonight.
't Was nice....

Me the only one being there, chatting 'Hi, all!'

Tried skip bombing a sub... nice splash just short of the sub, even bigger splash behind it.... yup, I missed it.

Wasn't too bad, as it appeared to be a friendly one ;-)

Well, I did return to base, ánd managed to land.

Took of once more, bombed a ship succesfully, but did not sink it.
Returned to base... Succesfull landing, again.

As still I was the only one on the server... so... I left....

But, I had my fun!

I believe our hosts are in Texas so we in the Eastern time zone get out of work two hours before they do. I've found things pick up later in the evening.

In the meantime I just practice my bombing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It sure was fun. In my opinion 7 players per side is just fine. You can pair up with someone... sneak around... B&Z...fly CAP ... anything. Once the numbers double or triple, then the fighting tends to happen in furballs.

Also, those who fly "Zeke vrs Widcats" would enjoy this server because it provides a new perspective on the battles that we enjoy.

Compared to the other folks I flew with this week, and weekend, they were clockwork!

Having someone watching my six definately helped, especially since I can be a little too agressive at times http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Matter of fact, Flat and I almost had a little fender bender chasing one of those aircobras over the Japanese fleet at one point! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Bear and I had a pretty good run on the Okinawa map, he kept getting into dogfights in his A6m7, and I boomed the Corsairs and Hellcats he kept drawing in with my Frank. Great fun! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Love that Wake map guys. Nice job. It was a bit of a thrill finding that carrier where it was supposed to be and getting to land on it. Don't be discouraged if PC is empty from time to time .. it won't be for long. Definately had a blast last night! Wake ended up with 1 living pilot on both sides to determine the winner!!

To those who fwded suggestions - thanks! Most notably: Spawnpoints on the "Pacific Fight" map (Palau) for the blue side have been fixed; Wake will get another fighter CV for both sides and looking to tone down Wake Island AAA just a bit. Wake itself will continue to have only 4 planes avail to spawn there to simulate real world limited acft during that battle.

Thanks again guys!!

Ello!
Thanks for the great fun last night. I started out playing blue, kicked it around for about an hour against the Wildcats, dropped a few, then switched to Americans. I can't figure out which side I prefer... both I guess! Seriously different tactics for both sides.

One little thing: I thought the AAA was quite heavy on Wake. I realize it may have been the case, but man! they just decimate any low flying zeros. And since most axis players won't really bother to bomb out the AAA sites, it makes it pretty horrible for a Zero to mix it up with the Wildcats. Is there any way you would consider stepping down the AAA just a bit? Not too much, but maybe 20% ? Right now, I think it makes it little TOO tough for the axis.

Cheers,

You could have a lot more people on your server if you listed the ip-addresse as a lot can not get into Hyperlobby. For example my friends from Japan have no chance of getting in there, so with Hyperlobby alone you are loosing out on people from asia. I myself haven´t managed in getting in too as my computer has a German setting and Hyperlobby is too dum to find my game http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Yes indeed! Plenty of bombers in our server sir!

There IS a way to actually TELL HL where to look for your game - helpful if you didn't put it in the default folder or for whatever reason. Can't think of the steps at the moment, but I'm sure someone over at hyperfighter.sk could tell you quickly.

Crash_Moses
06-06-2006, 09:58 PM
Yup, had to do it a couple of times myself... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

From the online manual:

7. LOCATING THE GAME INSTALLATION FOLDER

When you try to connect to a game room, HL may pop up the game-location dialog. This happens when HL is not properly set up or cant automatically detect the game location. This dialog can be forced by pressing CTRL+SHIFT and left-clicking on the CONNECT button. There are two ways to enter the correct game-installation folder:

1. Type the game path into the text box with the name of the game executable, for example "C:my gamegameapp.exe", then press the Save button.

2. Left-click the Search button and wait until HL finds your game folder. Then double-click on the correct item and select save.

If you think that both of these methods have failed, right-click your game icon, select properties, and copy and paste the game path into the textbox and left-click the Save button.

I will give it another try, although I have tried a lot to get into Hyperlobby. This problem seems to be real bad in asia, as hardly anyone seems to be able to get in, and several of those people I would not call amatures on computers so there must be more to it. But I will try your tip see what happens. As over ubi the only maps you can fly bombers are one or two servers listed under PF stand alone, the FB+AEP+PF servers you can forget too close are the bases so that you are only fighter fodder with a bomber.

Then I hope you can get HL working or at least join using the IP address. The fellers at AG-51 have loaded the maps with plenty of juicy bomber targets (except for the Okinawa Dogfight map. Bleah!) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/mockface.gif

As for being fighter fodder...ya gots ta be sneaky! I like to take the looooong way around. Come in high and from the opposite direction and they won't know what hit 'em.

Doh! Just gave away my position...

Got the Ip-address, so should be able to fly on the weekend! Yes that is how I fly too, is using the terrain to my advantage flying as low as possible and hiding behind the hills. Most fighters don´t worry me as a lot like to offer themselves to my AI-gunners but there are a few, who know better and if a mob spots you no chance. Ships aaa doesn´t worry me once you are near enough and below 20m they don´t fire any more!
Its is only when you are shot up and limping home that is where you are a easy target, nothing worse than shortly before reaching your base with your crippeled bird to be jumped on!

And if you fly low they can't sneak up beneath you. And it's a lot of fun hopping from gunner position to gunner position...I just wish the Betty had more ammo! (B-25 has plenty).

But I thoroughly enjoy level bombing and I've found that 14,000ft is a nice safe altitude. Flak isn't as bad and many of the fighter jocks don't want to climb that high (but many do!). But it takes so long to get there sometimes I just stick around 10,000ft or so.

Dive bombing is a blast too...can't say which I like better...the Val or the SBD...I think...both!

Looking forward to flying with ya...

SBD in a dive feels like a brick falling out of the sky to me, the Val almost like I'm hanging...something like floating in a pool targeting the drain and I have to really work to get there! Those sneaky Japanese engineers and their lighter-than-air planes!!

I too initially could not figure out how to set the path, and was unable to connect to HL for a log time. As for the problems encountered in Japan etc., I seem to recall that during my random net surfing some time ago I saw a fix explained in a Japanese URL. If my memory serves correctly, the problem is caused by the way how characters are defined in OS in different languages --- they have to deal with different sets of characters such as Kanji (chinese character), hence what the Japanese users type in, say, Japanese OS, is not recognized as the same character in different machines or in some softwares intended for other languages. Something like that.... They need to change something in control panel of OS.

Hi J_Anonymous,
I hope my friends see your reply, otherwise I will send it to them as a e-mail. I also have to see to it that I get into Hyperlobby, guess it is having problems with my computer as it is all in German, had that already with those patches, there things had to be changed manually otherwise you could not get those patches in the right file.
If they at Hyperlobby had a language option that would make things easier for those who do not have there computers set in English.

No kidding! Flew a couple of sorties last night in the SBD. Didn't take a hit until after I sunk my sixth ship (had to turn around and make the run again...hit the wrong ****** button.) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

And the reason I hit the wrong button...I was testing TeamSpeak. Got everything running, tweaked a couple things, assigned a push to talk button to my HOTAS, connected to my ISP at 33.6 instead of the usual 28.8 (tweaks seemed to have helped), logged into your TS server (using the lowest quality codec I could) and ran a few tests.

Ping jumped about 20 msec to around 230-240 but I've flown with a lot higher (as you well know). Didn't change much when I talked ,unless I held the button down, even with flak flying all around. Very stable. I recorded the session and sound quality was surprisingly good.

So, uplink looks good. Acid test will be the downlink. If I have problems with that I'll bump the modem back down to v.34 and see what happens.

Now I just need to shuffle my daughter off to summer camp or something so I can have my rig back! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Holy cow! That was great, being able to hear everybody last night....

I can't help but think though that some of the complaints about stuttering were the result of my connection. May have to limit my use of TS to times when there are only a few folks on. There was certainly a full house last night!

Speaking of which, a number of the lads asked if it was a "new" server. Considering the sporadic activity on the PF forum I was thinking it might be a good idea to broaden your advertising base by posting the main topic in the General Forum.

Yeah, but I wasn't sure if my latency in and of itself might be causing problems although yer server is normally pretty dang stable.

However, I was on again tonight and I really noticed the stuttering (didn't experience it last night) on the same map; Pelau Island. And I was all by my lonesome. It was just that map though. Others maps were fine.

I'll check the Palau and "Dragoon" maps for stutter.

Detroit Diesel should have been cleared, but I'll ask Dart to check again (you can do it from within the game for that session, but it has to be done at the server to make it permanent).
