maybe somebody with some knowlage can aswer me this question:
why does the IL2 even in the later years still have the small caliber 7.62 millimeter machine guns, and was not upgraded to the 12,7mm which every other soviet planes by that time...

only thing i can think of was possibly that it did not need the bigger punch of the larger round as most of its targets were ground based and lightly protected such as people and soft skinned trucks, using a smaller calibre and round would mean you could carry more ammo... Also if indeed it was common with the stuff the army was using it would also mean it could operate close to the line without the need for specialised munitions or spares for the guns.........


but as said just a guess

Often times rifle caliber MGs were used in conjunction with large caliber cannons as aiming aids.
