For the final patch, can we please have a proper level bomber AI routine for these planes? As it is now, they drop down to ground level after releasing their bombs and begin strafing targets like Il-2s, instead of simply moving on to the next way point. Just because they have forward-firing guns doesn't mean they should be acting like low-level ground attack planes.

Are you absolutely positively sure that they do that in every instance? Altitude of the GATTACK point on more than one bomber determines the behavior of said aircraft. For instance the Pe-2 or Ju-88 will level bomb or dive bomb depending on altitude and what makes the most sense...

The other question is...what happens when we DO want to make use of these planes in the low level strafing mode. They were used for that...thus the guns being fitted in the first place.

Yes, they do. Run an A-20C bombing mission from 3000 meters, and set a GAttack way point over a group of stationary targets. When left under the control of the AI, the bomber will make its run, drop its bombs, and then circle back around for a low-level gun pass.

For the Ju-88, Pe-2, and Ar 234, it's not only altitude but also the way the target is set up that determines how a target is attacked. For instance, if the target is a simple GAttack way point over a group of stationary targets (including bridges), they will level-bomb every time. A GAattack way point tied to a particular target (vehicle convoy, ship, train, etc.,) will result in a dive-bombing attack, provided the altitude is high enough.

As for your last question, it should simply be a matter of altitude that determines if they should strafe or not, just like it is for whether a dive-bomber will dive bomb or not. Say, anything under 1000 meters would result in a strafing run, preceded by a glide-bombing attack, or a simple strafing run if no bombs are on board. Can it really be that difficult to adjust?

Forget low-level attacks for the A-20 and B-25 anyway. They just cannot do it. Might as well do level bombing, then they'd do SOMETHING right.

What the "low-level strafers" will not do in Il-2:

1. There is a hard alt floor of 140m. They will not fly below that. So they don't attack at low level.

2. They don't strafe on target ingress. The entire point of all the guns was to attack and suppress targets BEFORE they dropped their bombs (on the same pass).

3. They form into line ASTERN to attack. WTF? Try to attack an airfield, and instead of spreading parafrags a little over a wingspan apart, they make a neat line, wrecking the same targets over and over.

Instead of all the above, they use "wheel of death." Aptly named, because they all die as they fly in idiotic strafing passes til they run out of ammo.

The game would need a major AI change for the US strafers to do their jobs properly (even just acceptably). For ground attack, they should open fire with the 50s at maximum range, and fire before, during, and after their bomb drops, then run home. Use as much ammo as possible in a single pass. For shipping, they should fire on ingress to the mast-height attack, drop 2 bombs, then peel away. Secondary passes as needed until bombs are gone.

At the very least, the minimum alt thing needs to go away. They need to fly the waypoints given them. On top of that, all the US strafer bombers need to form into line ABREAST to attack, not line astern.

indeed, please give the A-20C and B-25J the same AI routine like the B-25C/H-111H/G4M-1/Blenheim IV.........

as they are now (4.071) , its ugly to use them as AI bombers in COOP/singleplayer missions http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
