View Full Version : "Poppa's got a brand new bag." My first Online Experiences

I've been flying IL-2 since its first iteration but never ever online. I avoided online servers because I liked having the flexibility to run the game "my way". I didn't like landing or taking off and never practised either. About a year and half ago Bearcat began PMing me about joining the 99th and becoming a Redtail.

I thought about it a lot and even joined but health problems (vision), parental duties and my on insecurities kept me offline only. Finally, after taking my dog hostage, Bearcat convinced me to fly a coop with his squad. I met Hawggy, Diamond, Snake and some other's and they gently eased me into the taking of my online virginity. It went kinda like this.

1. Diamond talked me via MSN messenger through setting up teamspeak and everything else I needed to fly.

2. Diamond showed me how to navigate around Hyperlobby. NOT an easy thing which someone should do a detailed tutorial on here about.

3. Formed up with the fellows in a closed coop (thank goodness for that).

4. I promptly groundlooped on my first take off.

5. After restart I lurched into the air over the barracks and promptly "got lost". This cockpit always on, no icons on the map stuff is HARD!

6. Got found thanks to Bearcat putting on his nav lights. Followed on his six till mission was over. Fired nary a shot.

7. Restart new coop. Got off the ground smoothly. Didn't get lost. Warned Bearcat of vulching A.I. wingy. Got back to base.

8 Forgot to unlock rear wheel and drifted into the dirt wrecking shiney new Pony.

9. Laughed, smiled and hooted for a full hour of some of the best fun I've ever had and I never fired a shot. Who knew??

Thanks Bear, Diamond, Snake, Hawggy and all the rest of the Virtual Retails for making it one special night.

I wish I were there for it. There is nothing more exciting than your first coop.

Worf......welcome to teh joys of online flying and coops. I used to fly offline all the time at first too. Then i went online..like you a littel scared and unsure of my abilities. It's a whole new ballgame flying against real people not AI's. It's also addicting. ~S~

@ Worf101

Have a very similar tale- just started online after 3 years playing offline- getting ceamed on warclouds regularly but having fun with blairgowrie and his mates on co-ops. I can hardly talk on teamspeak for the dryness in my mouth sometimes - it gets very intense- a different game altogether.

BTW- I have put up a quick start guide with the help from this forum- see here

http://www.airwarfare.com/guides/flying_online.htm

I dont claim its definitive but should help others to get started.

Welcome to the land of the lost. I'm sure that's what the family would call this game.

It can get addicting but more importantly you will make close friend that live nearly around the world.

Have fun.

Oh, BTW Stay away from skinning. It's worst than flying on line. He he http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

NOOBS! Oh well...ME TOO! My first time online was last weekend (I can't remember which day, it's all very blurred). After flying offline for several years I was fairly confident that I would do quite well online...WRONG! I did thankfully manage to down 2 aircraft, but most of the time I spent as everybody's favorite target. It IS a completely different game online...even on the dogfight servers...and a bit nervy...I forgot most of what I'd learnt over the past years in the panic - trying to stay alive.
I'm still a little shaken by the experience http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif, God knows what it was like in real life coming up against real-life opponents for the first time!!

I'm going to have to get used to getting shot down!

See you online! Don't be gentle http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif.

LOL great stories, and welcome to Hyperlobby and the online world of Il-2.

As soon as i got the original sturmovik, i was online. I did start a campaign, but never finished. I think i realy enjoyed the online so much that i wouldn't or couldn't go back to single player campaigns. This is a great online community, better than any other i have been a part of. I have met more freinds and people through this community than i have at work, bars, or other events in the past 3 plus yrs.
My best freind introduced me to this game, and now i have a squad of best friends, kind of. The thing is you know what to talk about. PLANES and PC's. NO BS or politics, just WW2 Planes and computers.
I enjoy the comraderie and just basic friendships more than flying now. Just flying solo isn't as much fun. I need bombers to protect, ground objects to cover, enemy to hunt down, and AI just don't cut it.

By the way an ACE AI aint got nothing on the ACES in this community.

S! and again Welcome
Jboy

Good on you Worf http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I also found that the flying is more intense and the interaction with other humans hugely increases the enjoyment and immersion. It's really hard to go back to even the best of immersive campaigns after the experience you can enjoy in a tighly knit squadron or bunch of friends flying in organised tactics with voice comms.

Nothing like that first flight online; in formation, comms back and forth and unfortunate snaffu/wise-crack bringing down the house.

Sabre lead: "Sabre, tac left 90 to 2-7-0"
Mustang lead: "Sabre, Mustang tumbleweed"
Sabre: "Rgr Mustang, we are headed 2-7-0, advise posit when ready"
... long pause...
Mustang: "Sabre, I think I got it...standby"
Mustang: "Yes, yes, we are definitely in J8, near that river"
Sabre: "Mustang, brevity please"
Mustang: "Rgr, dang it, it's ... J... err.. um Jigalo 8 tack 5... or somethin'!"
Entire JG1 flight lawn-darts laughing their heads off. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Ha ha ha, this brings back memories. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Your first time is also a good test for your heart. I remember the first few times meeting enemy planes online and my heart almost pounding it's way through my rib cage. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I remember telling myself "Jesus, it's just a game, relax". It kinda makes you wonder how a real first timer felt when encountering the enemy.

My first kill, although 4+ years ago, is still very clear today. I've always choosen to fire at my targets from long distances. JG/54XTC(one of the two guyz that made "Requiem" video)was on the 6 of my teammate. There was no way I could catch him. I told my teammate to break right and when XTC followed I removed his right wing from 800m(icons on).

Even though the next few hours of online play involved constant punishment from XTC, I was very happy and proud. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'd like to add that for the first few weeks, before I got a kill, I was everyone's target. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

BTW, by going online I quickly learnt that going up against 16 enemy AI offline and being victorious is nothing compared to beating one experienced enemy pilot online.

Way to go Worf.... Hope you like the skins.
I still remember my first night online here.. only it was IL2 but still.. coming from CFS it was ... an adjustment to say the least. I still thank Redwulf1 for his kindness that night.. he and Painter were two folks who endeared this community to me early on.

Welcome aboard Worf. Glad you had a positive first time out with the 99th. One of the best things about our squad is how supportive and easy going we are. No prima donnas or A-holes. For most of us this is more than a game, its a social Tuskegee Airmen fan club. I've been flying online for 6 years and the last 2 years with the 99th have been the best.

S~ and welcome Worf. I can't wait to fly with you. My coops have come to be known as Die-by missions, but they are no harder than Red Diamond's missions, really.
Welcome to the squad. All are here to help you. See you online vrey soon, I hope.
Flyby out.

Nice thread, Worf.

I hope it encourages more folks to log on. I flew for three or four months offline until some posts on this board convinced me to try the online scene. Haven't looked back.

I'd never played a game online and the things I had heard about online gaming were not good. I was worried that all I'd find there was a bunch of kids acting juvinile. What I discovered was a bunch of old guys acting juvinile. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Seriously, I'm online 2,3 or 4 nights a week for a couple hours or so since 2002. 95% of that time in coops. I can count on one hand the number of TK'rs or general spoil sports I've run into in that time. For all the unique individuals in that crowd at HL, they are generally a good bunch.

After a while you recognize the hosts that run the coops/ settings you like and you gravitate to those games. I'll jump in a public 99th coop in a second. You've chosen good company there. I always enjoy flying their coops whether I'm blue or red. Serious pony drivers they are.

See you online.

Take care.

Hey guys, Worf101 made his first successful carrier takeoff last night. Not bad, eh? But know what? He made a GREAT first landing on a carrier too! He just lined 'er up and sat 'er down (Hellcat). Would have been a three-wire in RL. Impressive.
So Worf, no pressure now as you go for 100 consecutive traps! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If you'd seen me shaking and dry mouthed afterwards you wouldn't even dream of me trying THAT 100 times. Just glad I didn't run into anyone. You guys are the greatest. That was so much fun!!!

Thanks mucho.

Great post Worf http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Change the names and the squad and that's pretty much how my first online flights went - even down to losing everyone ( to this day I still wonder how I "lost" 18 B17's and 12 escorting P47's just by looking around momentarily http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif )
