I have had a number of careers by now, as have most of us. Regarding tactics, aggression in convoy battles or going to suicidal patrol grids, does anyone else get more conservative as the war progresses? Esp if playing DiD. I still go for it but only if I'm 100% certain and I stick to my battle plan, no going off on tangental attacks. It's nearly '44 for this current Skipper.

You're doing well getting that far. I usually get to '43 or so then die in a blaze of stupidity

I have had 10 captains in Campaign. 1 is in play, 4 have survived, 5 have died, playing DiD. Not good odds for the boat and crew, even playing with a strategy and tactics. Most died from 43 on.

Yeah, Im using thr GW mod now. Even harder at higher levels. Time comp becomes a luxury, ack-ack a necessity and tonnes of luck. Haven't got a full patrol out on GW yet (due to time and mrs hueywolfs list of 'small' jobs), but very hard to find targets, even harder to chase in bad weather. A lot of people on this forum are starting to complain about this as a lot of them were used to bagging 100k+ per patrol & now with a level of realism, they find this impossible.
I'm enjoying the challenge, but I'll have to take a small holiday soon so I can push through a few patrols http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Here is a plan I use, it works on small to medium convoys and assumes you have at least 1 homing torp in the rear tube and 1 in the front, so its '43-44. I stick to it and don't go for targets in the convoy outside my window of attack. Like all plans it can go out the window real quick if things get pear shaped though!

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif I have completed one patrol with GW. My experience is similar to yours. Convoys are plentiful in the shipping lanes, but detecting them in time to intercept is another matter. I clumsily sank 3 neutrals at night before realising I was in an area that had a lot of non-war commerce. The first generation radar
was helpful in locating one convoy, but its harder to keep it on target and functional than a drunk rifleman.

I'm using the modified battery tweak, so they don't last quite as long. All in all; one will work much harder to get kills.

...And the sinking time... well! I sweated an hour and a half in an Air patrol zone off Freetown to see if a Tramp steamer would sink. It had one torpedo hole and I expended the entire remains of my deck gun ammo. The damn thing settled to the main deck and floated like a cork. Having no ordinance left, and risking air attack, I slunk off, giving up the kill.

Yes!! By the time 1944 comes my skipper turns into a checken. I have even given up on convoys, though I think I can still get them.

What happend is that for the first time I wasn't able to get away from the DD's in 15 minutes. (There was another time like this but I had forgot to turn on silent running that time.) Since I played DiD and I want this captain to make it I have become a killer of single ships only.
