Check out this interview... it is from the old Blue Byte forum... (I got this from SHQ thanks to Dude) and consider where we are today. I know the next two add ons arent out yet.. but they are coming..... just think about it... plus he said even then the engine was 2.5 years old... so all this that we have is on a maxxed out 7.5 year old engine. STILL going strong. Pretty darn impressive if you ask me. Keep in mind the date of this interview. Do you think he delivered? There is a question about add ons.... consider all the free stuff..... the add ons were IMO worth it.. even if the other free stuff wasnt there... when all the free stuff is taken into consideration... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif It is interesting that he mentioned the Go229 even then.

Oleg Maddox: "First time you see it - you'll spend couple hours to make your first mission. The 15 min, then 10 min, then....="

BB Contact: "How difficult will take off/landing be and which is the most difficult a/craft to do this in at the moment?"
Oleg Maddox: "To take off is easy on any plane, if you don't take too much bombs in overloading, Landing - I think MiG-3 and Bf-109. And some time P-39, if you forgot that you have nose wheel. ="
BB Contact: "Will it be easy to turn aircraft and ground target identification icons/labels on or off?"
Oleg Maddox: "Sorry don't understand tem easy "to turn". About ground icons. We tried to use them, but the quality of modeling is very good and you'll be able to identify troops very easy. Icons on the ground bring us many not nice effects... This is still subject to change.="
BB Contact: "Will I will be able to shoot down Oleg and T1 from the skies when game comes out? "

I remember being in that chat.

I am trying to remember when I got the "super secret" IL-2 Beta Installation disk packet... it was cool stuff... lots of familiar names were on that test team, including Luthier, Starshoy, Stigler, etc.

Ahh... the good old army days.

I remember a stretch I spent almost 24 continuous hours testing and writing reports for Oleg, and setting up a lab to test multiplayer capabilities.

Oleg gave me access to the first version of a dedicated server. I set it up and had an online session with testers from all over the world so that we could see if firewalls would work well with the online system.

Oleg told me he thought I could develop some applications for IL-2 after going to my site, when I was involved with some old X-Wing/TIE-Fighter/XvT/and X-Wing Alliance projects. I took him on his offer and did the best I could as a tester, then developed UQMG.

I was still playing CFS(1) when I saw screenies of IL-2 in deve, I was impressed then, and for the most part I'm still impressed today.

No sim comes close to Olegs stuff, although if I had to pick one point it would be LW sympathy that seems to have filtered through.

well, one thing is for sure....Oleg's English has certainly improved, heh heh http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif.

I was flying cfs2 when i noticed this, fighting the lousy misn blder and having to make the zillion mods to get stuff to work right etc. This was such a relief to get into. Amazingly good engine for that time period. Well be flying this for yrs to come.

Heh, those were the glory days indeed!
One thing is certain is the strength of the community and the diversity of it. The IL2 community has not diminished but rather spread out and found many niches.
Long live the IL2 community!
