I recently upgraded my AMD64 3800+ @2.4 to a Conroe 6400 @ 2.13 gigs with a P5B Deluxe ASUS motherboard. I also overclocked the cpu to 2.4gigs to match my old AMD.

Benchmarks

AMD...1024/768 / Perfect / water 1 / Blackdeath track
Min 27/Av 60/ Max 90 frames rates much higher when flying normally

Conroe....same settings
Min 46/ Av 100 / Max 137

IL-2 really likes the Conroe processor....BOB...who knows

I fly with lower setting because I don't want any hint of a stutter, and I don't notice any difference in graphics quality when running 1600X1200.

With the Conroe I can now fly with no stutter using water 4.

Nvidia BFG7900 GTX
2 GByte DDR2 1066 Corsair XMS Twin2X

Funny my last three upgrades have had lower clocked cpus
P4 @ 2.6
AMD @ 2.4
Conroe @ 2.1

Thanks for sharing. Finally some real world numbers about Core2Duo and FB. Looks like for now, any one building would be better off building with Intel rather than AMD.

Me? Even if I were building new, I believe I would stick with AMD. They will come out with a competitive chip and it won't take them 3 to 4 yrs to do it like it took Intel to answer AMD's K8. I believe within the year, Intel will once again being playing catchup to AMD when it comes to gaming. Although I could be wrong. It's all specualtion on my part.

You could be right Quazi. I don't see anything on AMD's horizon except their 4x4 system. I don't really care as I just buy the one that gives the best price per performance. It was AMD and now its Intel. Tommorow who knows, but luckily there are two different compteting companies keeping the price lower that it would be otherwize. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

would you mind telling me how you did it? im having a hell of a time getting fraps to properly test my system, and Id kind of like to compare notes!

While flying or running one of the tracks you would like to use as a benchmark. Hit Shift and Tab together.... then type fps START SHOW

This will display your maximum, minimum, and average frame rate.

and you just wait towards the end of the run?

Thanks! ill post my results in a second...

Hmm interesting, I cant type when I hit shift tab....but using the instant benchmark (F11)

I get 88 min/95 max/ avg 91.91 at 1024x768 water = 1

AMD Dual Core Opteron 165 @ 2.62 ghz
ATI Radeon X1950XTX overclocked to 675/1050
1 GIG PC3200 @ 217 mhz

All I know is I can crank the gfx to 1280x 4x/16x and run 50+ fps all day!

for those short of funds, a better bang for buck upgrade might be a amd cpu, if u already have a amd 939 system, as u dont havetobuy another mobo..

pretty rocking performance tho http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Hey Chivas, do you know if the Conroe works with the 945P chipset? (ASUS P5LD2 board).

Thanks.

You know this is the most civil discussion of AMD vs. Intel I've seen on the net in 2 years. God, you go to any tweak or tech board and it's like Hatfields vs. McCoys. Absolutely NO LOVE anywhere. I'm an AMD man, yet I can acknowledge a superior product "when I see it". And right now Intel's got the edge. But a full year before Intel had Core2Duos ready to buy, folks were on other boards telling AMD fanbois XY and Z.

I don't understand where this fanaticism comes from, it's just a friggin computer chip!!!!! I'll stick with AMD cause, quite frankly, I was burned by Intel on an older home build and they'll never get another dime of my money long as I draw breath... but that aside, it's GOOD FOR EVERYONE to have Intel competitive again.

Like Chivas, I have no alliances with either company. I want the best performer for the dollar when I'm ready to build. That's all. If I wait until the next great iteration from either company, I'd always be waiting.

I build new every 18 months. I've done it for almost 6 years and it keeps my whole network fresh. Even my oldest rig on my network runs IL2 decently (P4 2.4, 1 gb ram, 9700 pro). It's really nice though to be at a build-point and have this fresh technology released. The pc market hasn't seen this type of performance increase since the first pentiums...

I'm not sure if it does Tree. I would go to the Asus web site and check its specifications. Then check for new bios updates for your board that adds Conroe support.

I hope it will mean better linux support for ATI cards. That plus Cedega and I might finally be able to play the IL2 series on Linux. Testing with Aces High (which I did get to work) on an Nvidia card gave better FPS than on Windows XP.

Yes indeedy. It's a great time for "bang for your buck". For about $1600.00 US you can snatch up an off the shelf running a 6600 with 2 gig 800 DDR, twin 7950gt's, 7.1 sound, water cooling, and a healthy hard drive.

And AMD, in response, has dropped it's prices dramatically.

It is a time to enjoy.

Thats a definite NO, only 965 and 975 chipsets support it, like Asus P5B and the like.

I've got no loyalties to one company or the other - I've had this 3GHz P4 for the last two years and Il-2 runs smoothly with everything maxed (although I haven't played online or on a large and complex map since bumping the settings). Truth be told, I can't remember if it's a P4 or an Athlon half the time... and the other half I've guessed it wrong...
