Actually, I seem to remember seeing this done before, by Sea Cadets. I don't think theirs was fitted with a periscope, though..

I thought I had already replied about this one today. I think I'm going senile. However, I did post this on Subsim after reading about it here. Good story, Andy, and thanks for sharing it.

But there's no way this thing looks like a WW2 U-boat. It looks more like Red October, but well done for the old gentleman.

AndyJWest,

I was sitting having a drink (mug of cocoa...) at a Thames-side establishment a few years back when this strange contraption chugged past...

It could really do with a twin 20mm gun mounting on the back, but I think the river police might take exception to it.

There was a WW2-style MTB moored below Teddington lock some years back that had what looked like an Oerlikon cannon mounted on it, but I think it was a film prop, and they probably had permission.

I had a good look for images of the Sea Cadet's 'submarine' but haven't found any yet.

You must be familiar with my neck of the woods. I remember that MTB, when it was used as a houseboat, moored at Old Isleworth back in the 1970's - 1980's. My sister had a converted LCM called Coot 'parked' nearby on the same mooring. Small world! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Do you happen to remember the vintage DUKW that came ashore from the Thames at the White Cross pub at Richmond most summer Saturdays during the late 80's and early 90's? It stopped the traffic - literally! It was so big it got stuck in George Street and caused gridlock. I think the police eventually asked the owner to leave it in the river. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Ah yes, the DUKW, It (or another one like it) used to be parked in one of the backstreets of Kingston until a few years ago - a cul-de-sac fortunately.

I seem to remember seeing a LCM on the river too, being used for river-bank repairs.

There are still one or two MTBs/MGBs about on the river, though most have been modified one way or another. A few Dunkirk 'little ships' too...
