No...what's the story...???

Celeon999

As Suhren was visiting his old friend Hufnagel in Stettin he came across some polish pows which worked in agriculture.

Suhren heard that a classical music band had been formed out of them and that they were usally playing beethoven or tchaikovsky in restaurants.

Hufnagel came up with the idea to ask them if they would like to play the polish national anthem for them.

First they dont liked the idea to play it in that situation at all. It was forbidden to play it afterall and they could get into a lot of trouble if they would do so.

But Suhren begged them to play it even if they do it just very quietly.

He always liked the melody and its text "Poland is not lost yet!"

Suhren described that the band members had tears in their eyes while they were playing it and it was the same with him and Hufnagel.

And of course one of the "150 % national socialists" like Suhren used to call them, heard it and got in rage.

Suhren said that "he as an officer ordered them to do it" and that he takes full responsibility.

Of course, the 150 % nazi wrote a letter about this "untolerable happening" to SuhrenÔ┬┤s flotilla commander and he got into a lot of trouble for that.

By the way : Later it was Erich Topp and his influence who managed to pull Suhren out of the fire. But thats another story http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have just started reading his memoirs "Ace of Aces" it seems like a good read so far. It will be interesting to see if he relates to his moments with the Polish musicians and the resulting trouble he got in.

So we are neighbours just 130 km !
FYG - last year I saw at Duty Free Zone in Szczecin port U-boot's concrete bunker.
It's still in good condition and (now without water inside)used as dangerous goods warehouse.

For the people who dont know what we are talking about : http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Stettin is the german name for Szczecin which is the capitol city of west-Pomerania in poland today.

That here is one of the most important landmarks there.

The Brama Portowa or Berliner Tor (Berlin gate) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/1120/mkstettinberlinertor8be.jpg

Beside Danzig , the Stettiner Haff was and is the second largest harbor of poland and thats why an u-boat base was also located there. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I believe there was a u-boat crew academy also there ?

The_Silent_O

The Szczecin or Stettin area is where my lineage is from. Our old name is very similar to the Polish spelling of the city.

My Uncle was born on a ship in the harbor of Gdansk in the early 20s when they hit landfall in New Jersey he became an American citizen.

We still have some distant relatives there and one is a priest.

Unfortunately I don't know.

Picture of gate is excellent - I heard there was four such customs gates in Szczecin (for four directions). Still remained two of them. Custom fee could be paid also in living goods as ducks, hens etc !

We also had relatives living in Danzig (Gdansk) and K├┬Ânigsberg (Kalinigrad, belongs to russia now) until 1944.

Hach where is Kapit├┬Ąnleutnant Ludwig Bockholt, now that we have so much nice new propaganda coming in here ?

Celeon joins in with some air dropped propaganda ment to spread mistrust between the allied soldiers. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

I wonder if good olÔ┬┤ Goebbels had his hands on that one. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Celeon comes up with an old german propaganda newsreel. Must be from late 44 or early 45.

Very interesting footage at the beginning shows Luftwaffe fighters starting and landing on improvised "airfields".

Better said their airfield is just a open field of dirt and mud. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Celeon also likes the sound of the Nebelwerfer-41 rocket launchers. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

With english subtitles of course http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Prop Newsreel 11 MB (http://s17.quicksharing.com/v/6862067/Wwii_Nazi_Propogande_Film_Deutsche_Wochenschau_194 5_Luftwaffe_Pa.wmv.html)

Reinforced ceiling and walls.

All not part of the original stadium construction. They were build later in 1942.

The companyÔ┬┤s Blaupunkt and Siemens were producing small parts for rocket motors and electronic bomb fuses in these rooms during the ww-2. There is also a lot of strange tunnels , rooms and an big hall underneath the stadium.

Not sure what they were ment for but they were part of Albert SpeerÔ┬┤s "Germania" plans and were supposed to be completed after the end of the war.

Its real big this time (120 MB - 23 minutes) the reason for this is that the newsreel contains three things in one.

I would've posted more but Imageshack went down. Either way, I find an interesting contrast between US and English posters versus the German and Italian Fascist posters. The americans tend to post alot of posters which make it look like your going to be a war hero and when you get back you can be a "stud" and score with women. The German and Italian posters have an element of pride and "fight for your country and fellow brother" feel to them. Interesting...

I was at the Long Beach VA Hospital today, and when I walked down the hall where the retail store is, I thought of this post. There are all kinds of these posters, I wanted to grab some of them and run. They may even be worth some good money. I wish I had my Digital Camera with me, I'd love for you to see some of the posters and WWII pics they have on display there.

I go back Sept. 26th for surgery , so I will bring Camera then.

Pre war German stuff is --especially when compared to the base (and telling) America/UK 'T & A' (t i ts and a s s) stuff-- interesting... (Don't know if you've seen these before; they are not in this thread though so...)

Of special mention --not for politcal reasons, just for curiosity sake-- is a pre-Hitler "SA" Cubist one with, imo, homosexual overtones:

http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/2180/sa20voranlf3.jpg

After Hitler: No cubism, still a little gay, add hint of Jewish of all things!--

http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/7660/sa20mann20brandcc3.jpg

(Hitler takes over the already in exsistence WWI reactionary and continuing-19th cent romanticist/nationalist movement and molds 'SA' portion of that movement into SS.

Fascinating to note irony in the fact that German 20th cent nationalism comes from German 19th cent romanticism which comes from early 19th cent Celtic (scot irish etc) romaticism ['pre Raphaelite'] which was spread (and created, even) in part by... Jewish aristocrat intellectuals. Doh!

The same intellectuals that created the original goals of Zionism [a return to the near east for 'the diaspora'], which
post war Britain siezed upon to strenghten its colonial agenda in the near east, while pretending to relinquish its occupation of ...the world; Britain started to attemp decolonization of the planet after WWII, given the rhetoric it used to admonish and criminalize Germany for occupying... Prussia (and the Rhineland etc).

(For the smart among you [sarcasm], romanticism means a golly gee wilikers take on history a`la Braveheart, Dances with Wolves, Rob Roy, Last
of the Mohecians: "Noble hill folk are better than machivellian cosmo effetes and the near eastern/southern diaspora that brings this cosmo effetness".)

----
Much american propaganda is borrowing of other nation's stuff (eg 'superman' comics and newsreel movie-theater anthro/science lessons with maps of Europe with big black arrows on them with the word 'Hun' in the arrow lol) but this one should be familiar to nephew's of their uncle...

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/8708/reichswehr2xr3.jpg

YOUR UNCLE OTTO WANTS YOU. lol

Very gothic and dire no?

----
One of my favorites in this thread is the leaflet about the rampant scandalous infidelity in Britain (a low blow -- yes; but fairly accurate, tellingly):

(Twice I said "tellingly" in this thread. What I mean is it gives us an indication of what the West proper is (ie the Brits/US and the diaspora are) ultimately fighting for and doing to the world, purposely or not.)

Page three here has some US T&A recruitment. Also I was thinking of the endless bomber, et al, mascots ('vargas girls').

US vibe is sex for knaves mixed with occasional appeals to religious-like belief in unachievable utopias of 'freedom' and
'liberty' --as abstracts rather than concrete objectives. Ie "we will create 'freedom'..." rather than "we will 'free' ourselves from so and so oppressor(s)". Anglo america is steeped in the former; it is a religion. (americans shunned the enlightenment [and romance] movements of the 19th century. Admittedly this 'enlightenment'["naturalism" (and nationalism)] leads to ephiphanies of the 'bleak death' called nihlism.)

The socialist --fascist and communist-- regimes lack the T&A motiffs, choosing history/ antropolgy spin instead (lensing through
culture's/sub-race's successes and failures in history --and who's apparently to 'blame'). (One can then debate whether these antro spins are accurate or should be allowed at all even if they are, as the modern UN does.)

(Nilhism/pointlessness/futilism [ie the inevitable outgrowth of objective observation of natural reality?] has developed as the main form of intellectual expression in the socialist cultures --and France. lol. It has been said that optimism is a child's delusion and pessimism is a pejorative the delusional invented to hurl at the REALISTS (ie there are only the delusional and the realists). And I don't mean optimism or pessimism about whether, say, 'we'll find clams today if we dig long enough' but rather whether or not some utopian goal or religion can really achieve anything more than... the same, for naturalist determinist reasons.)

---
Now about my 'tellingly' comment regarding gender...

Western--anglo american-- success and feminism (hyper western chivalry) are synonymous. Socialist nations don't do this 'family
destruction'/epidemic female infidelity to themselves; even communism, which uses female-liberation advocacy-demagoguery as one of its tactics, doesn't in the end.

Even though National Socialism doesn't expressly say "we want to stop 'feminism'" and the anglo american optimism (called democracy and capitalism) doesn't [originally at least] expressly say 'we want to promote feminism', in the end the anglo american belief did, and the socialist belief didn't.

I belief one can see these two trends already there in the way the two different cultures expressed "pyschological social symbols" and used propanganda. It was innate and unspoken /not even processed but there in subtle pyschologically expressed ways.

Now if you believe the feminist rhetoric that T&A everywhere proves so called "patriarchy" controls women, I first say to you 'which
feminist wing are you talking about'? And second: saying the moon is made of cheese doesn't mean it is; ie women --and the mediocre males who are their toadies (think 'donahue')-- are notoriously bad philosophers. If you say that anglo-american soldiers are "conservatives" (whatever that means) and therefor they don't fight for feminism (and etc "liberal" [whatever that means] things), I say see my above paragraph above about what is expressly said and what ultimately happens (for complex determinist reasons).

I'm not fluent in Russian but from what I can gather the first page is a propaganda statement, saying that Stalin's high-ranking leaders/commanders (vlasti) don't give a damn about you and are happily throwing you into the fry in a reckless fashion, thus ruining not only the lives of yourself and your comrades, but the homeland (narod) as a whole. Sabotage Stalin's evil doings by stopping to fight.

The second page is a safe-conduct chit (Propusk/Passierschein) for those willing to give up.
It states (in the vertically printed German text) that it is valid for all members of the Soviet Armed Forces, including Officers (field commanders), Political Workers and ordinary fighting men. N.B. yes, politrabotniki means political workers, including Political Officers (Zampoliti - each commander had one watching over his shoulder) and Political NCOs (propagandists mixed in with the regular troops). The Rusian text further mentions that this safe-conduct chit looses its validity at the end of the war (meaning "give up now before Germany wins - if you don't, we won't guarantee your safety if we catch you after we win"), and there is an instruction that if you want to give up without being in possession of this safe-conduct chit you should approach the German forces with your hands up in the air and shouting "Stalin kaput" ("Stalin broken").<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Use the vertical!

I feel :
bojcy - soldiers
kamandiry - officers
politrabotniki - political officers (sent to the front by Communist Party) /you are right rabotniki means workers - so translation is
"political workers"/

Do you remember "The Hunt for Red October"

Wow. I can really read and understand that dutch "Kauderwelsch" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif from the first poster. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Its still easier to understand dutch than norwegian which has only 40 % of similarity to german http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Its has nothing to do with propaganda but i just found this american LIFE magazine from 1939 that has U-35 on its cover. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

hmm... somehow I felt offended by that statment http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif . I dont know how many Norwegians was directly nazis, but I dont think it was that many. Many of the Norwegian Frontfighters thought the comunist was a bigger threat, and feelt strongly about our nigbour Finnlad being at war whit Sovjet. Also dont forget the Norwegian resistans or the Exile gouvement in England nor Norwegian RAF flyers. Ande we never ever surendered to the germans, continued to fight to the end of the conflict.

The Dutch poster reads;

A 15.000 ton sunk ship

Means the month ration for a city like Amsterdam with +/- 900.000 inhabitants. And per head this means; 3kg meat, 15 wheat or bread and 2kg fat. This is only 1 ship. Many millions tons of English shiploads are already on the ocean floor and many millions will follow...
Germany wins the battle of the Atlantic

The cityplan inside the ship is Amsterdam. I dont know is this poster is from late in the war or not? Its interesting because the last winter (44-45), the North of the Netherlands suffered a severe famine ( called the Hungerwinter, people even ate tulipbulbs because of the shortage of food http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif ). Maybe this way the Germans would prove their might?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

There were two different kinds of foreign soldiers in the german armed forces.

Those who were forced to join and those who volunteered.

Here are some numbers and names ive found but there are definitly incomplete :

Forced recruits :

Poland 250.000
Belgium 8.000
Slovenia 35.000
Luxembourg 140.000
Hungary 120.000
and lots from occupied soviet republics

Volunteers (no numbers) :

Poland : The so called "Anti-boshevik legions" mainly recruited out of soviet POW camps.

Swiss
Spain
Portugal
Sweden
Turkey
India
Palestine
Tunisia
Croatia
Slovenia
Ukraine
Denmark
Letland
Estland
Romania

and even : (No joke !)

Yes i forgot France and the Netherlands.

I cant say something about numbers.

Will have to look for that.

I just know that there were over 10.000 volunteers from Spain alone.

Mainly anti-communists who saw their great chance to eliminate communism in eastern europe and asia.

They joined right after Barbarossa began.

The SS had also muslim SS units from yugoslavia. They had an Iman instead of an RottenfŘhrer (squad leader). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

They were mainly hunting serbian resistance fighters.

I have some photos in my books. I will post them later.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Muslim SS soldiers wearing the traditional Fez in addition to their uniforms.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/4384/pic0002xv0.jpg

Every Battalion had its own Imam and every regiment its own Mullah.

The first formation was a catastrophy. Some of them stole money, killed a german officer and deserted.

The second formation was a success after the Grandmufti of Jerusalem was contacted and motivated them to follow orders.

From their SS combat rating :

"Wonderful human material"
"From a racial point of view of low grade and improper" "But strong and healthy combat material"

I have to comment it.
Part of Poland as from 1939 was incorporated into the German Reich (so people were treated as Germans even a lot of them had Polish roots or were Poles).
I think east front joint mostly Silesian people who had no other option ! They had to join German Army as they were treated as Germans (after WWII German's archives treat all of
them as Poles even those with German roots)! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/sadeyes.gif

They are mentioned in my book.

They were captured by the soviets in 1939 and brought to labour camps in the east.

As those camps were "liberated" by the advancing german armies during Barbarossa they were recruited to fight against Stalin.

There are no specific names mentioned , only that they were called "Anti-Bolshevik legions"

Not further informations in my book.

They were propably integrated into the wehrmacht units.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks Celeon !
As I know there was no one single Polish legion who fight against Soviets.
Soldiers captured in the east joint Gen. Anders Army (later on they fight in Monte Cassino) and Gen. Berling Army who attacked Berlin together with Red Army.
Officers mostly died shot by NKWD in Katyn.

I`ve read in a book D-Day by Stephen Ambrose that majority of troops opposing Omaha landings were Ost-Truppen or better still.
There is a story of three Koreans.
How did they get there you ask yourselves?

Well, the story goes like this:
They were originaly in Korean army.
When Japaneese occupied Korea they drafted them in their army and sent them to fight against Russia in Manchuria.
They were then captured by Russians who put them in their uniforms and latter sent them to defend Moscow.
Again they were captured, this time by the Germans and sent to defend the Atlantic wall, where they were, you guessed it, captured by Americans.

After the Americans defeted Japan they were sent back home....only to find themselved in yet another fight between North and South Korea.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

A really nice thread. Has anyone yet posted this classic? When I was a kid I didn't think she looked like anybody's Mum...

This one from 1942 was personally banned by Churchill. He didn't like the suggestion that the bombsite & boy with rickets came thanks to Tory governments of the 1930s!

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/1941/fightforitfw5.jpg

And this is a famous one from 1946 which caused a huge fuss at the time, so it was obviously very effective:

http://img327.imageshack.us/img327/8372/keepdeathoffdq0.jpg

If you look carefully in this nice Osbert Lancaster cartoon of 1949 you can see his take on her...

I dismiss this kind of "democracy" when history is substituted with "no offence" policy because of one man.

Oh yes thats indeed not easy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

It is an appeal to u-boat men to sabotage their boats while in dock.

Ok here we go :

SIX WEEKS OF VACATION
for the whole u-boat crew,

when a colleague lets a ballast tank crack due to too high air pressure.

When someone closes the vent and the floodingclap of a ballast tank and then spins the valve a bit , like he is checking if the pressure conduct is still airtight, he can easily walk away and wait that the "accident" happens.

The best time to do it is during testings at the pier or during trimming tests.

Thats a safe thing.

First, things like this happen often even without help by someone.

Second, nobody can proof who did it.
Every dockworker or boilerman who came aboard might has been the one who operated the valve.

Third, there is some time between the opening of the valve and the cracking of the tank when the pressure gets too high.

Nobody can say exactly when this has happened.

Sure is : The boat needs to go into the dock - and the crew has docktime extension !<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Nice picture Bockholt! I've seen a photo of the same subject before, but not this excellent painting.

http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c188/VikingG/clip_image060.jpg

The greenery on the conning tower is to celebrate U-201's commander, Kaleun Adalbert Schnee, winning his Oak Leaves. The snowman symbols painted on the U-boat are a light-hearted representation of Schnee, whose name means 'snow' in German. Naturally, the snowmen, like Schnee, wear the Knight's Cross http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I can't read the name, but there is obviously a life-ring taken from a British merchant vessel sunk by U-201 too. (I must get around to renewing my uboat.net subscription so I can look these things up!)

Schnee was the Kaleun who famously, in the hours that followed the 4th May 1945 ceasefire, commanded a Type-XXI in which he intercepted the British cruiser HMS Norfolk. He evaded the destroyers, simulated a torpedo attack, then left the area and subsequently surrendered.

Bockholt, where did you find that picture? Do you know when it was painted?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Greetings VikingGrandad, and many http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gifs to you. All that you say is correct, but I can add a little. The painting is by Geoff Shaw, clearly based on that photograph. The photo must have been taken between July 21 1942 when U 201 sunk the fleet auxiliary HMS Laertes (T137, 545 dt - 180 miles SSW of Freetown, Sierra Leon) and 8 August, when she returned to Brest. Presumably they stopped to gather the oak boughs, as they don't seem to grow in the sea. After that O/L Guenther Rosenberg took command of U 201 and she was subsequently sunk - with no survivors - by the destroyer HMS Fame (Cdr S. Heathcote) 850 miles ENE of St John's, Newfoundland, January 3 1943.

Will that do for my short story competition entry?!?

Slightly different subject, reminded by the propaganda leaflets posted above : I read an interview with an elderly German who had been a radio operator in Russia during WW2. He said that there were two superb radio channels full of good music, very dirty jokes and highly accurate news which everyone listened to. There was also Goebbels' official channel which was dull and mistrusted by comparison. The two good channels were known to come from London and, in his words, be 'the work of German Jews', though none of the soldiers were stupid or racist enough to prevent them from listening, especially to the excllent jokes and relatively truthful news bulletins.

This suggests that British Intellegence was rather brilliant, doesn't it?

Thanks Bockholt. I wonder where they stopped to pick up the oak boughs!? Perhaps one of the other U-boat bases south of Brest, or maybe special 'overseas' delivery from the Deutsche Reichspost! Anyway, it's good that they went to so much effort for the Kaleun.

Here's another superb piece of maritime art that perhaps you have seen before:

A wonderful painting. Presumably comemorates the sinking of a famous German ship? Not, I think, Wilhelm Gustloff, but perhaps a 19th/early 20th Century one?

Got it! It's by Claus Bergen and it's a wreath comemorating Jutland/Skaggerakschlacht, cast into the sea by the Reichsmarine. You can just make out little swastikas in white circles on the ribbands...

Im from Estonia, actually I wanted to ask where can I find posters which had used in World War II.
Im actually big fan of U-Boats, but I have so much work to do, so I have not much time to play Silent Hunter III.

If you are interested of them, theres pictures to at right up corner -> http://www.online.ee/~peeprada/lembit/lembit.html (http://www.online.ee/%7Epeeprada/lembit/lembit.html)

Its in estonia, but its OK to look for pictures.

Greetings Glivenko and thanks for the link to your historic sub. Interesting that it was built by Vickers Armstrong - that would be at Barrow-in-Furness (NW coast of England)I think. That company was pretty incredible in the 1920s/30s making everything from machine guns to airships. They built battleships for the Royal Navy & made tanks for countries as diverse as Bolivia and Poland.

Can you tell us some of the history of the Lembit & Kalev?

A nice kit of the great ORZEL from Mirage:

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/1488/orzelzw3.jpg

Sorry I haven't assembled it yet, otherwise you'd see the finished version. (One day!)

Dutch-built, after breaking out from Gdynia she was briefly in Tallin in October 1939 where (presumably) the occupying Russians tried to intern her. Escaped to England. The box art depicts her sinking German freighter Rio de Janeiro. ORZEL was lost May 25 1940.

Good luck in your exams Gilvenko! (You will do well in English if that's one of them.) http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

A somewhat famciful picture of the Royal Navy panicking and abandoning Ark Royal with a slight list to port...

It is, however, true that the engineers who could have saved her by rigging up emergency electrics had been evacuated, so she just failed to make it to Valetta.

Total casualties : one man, one aircraft carrier.

OK, it's Corageous, but still a somewhat fanciful picture etc.

Just thought the artist had done a bad job of the Ark, but let's say he's done a good job of the hardware, a bad (propaganda) one of how the men behaved. Another pedantic correction of myself : Ark Royal was making for Gibraltar, not Malta, when she sunk.

Not exactly. Should be Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and parts of Serbia http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
(however on poster is "Croatian from Bosnia-Herzegovina")

Ante Paveli? arrived on 20 April, 1941, to become the head of government, poglavnik (fŘhrer), of the state that would soon encompass most of modern Croatia, all of Bosnia-Herzegovina and parts of Serbia (Syrmia and Sand?ak regions). Because the Usta?e did not have a capable army or administration necessary to control the territory, the Germans and the Italians split up the NDH into two zones of influence, one in the southwest controlled by the Italians and the other in the northeast controlled by the Germans.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Ok thats a bit harder to translate. It has some rarely used words.

Announcement !

On July ,13 1940 , a pole did shoot on a german soldier.

The entire polish population will be held responsible for such an act.

I have therefore ordered to take hostages who will be liable for the good conduct of the polish population.

If an act of violence should be committed against the german wehrmacht or members of the german wehrmacht in the future , the hostages will be shot.

The military commander

Ok .....

During the planning phase for the construction of the Titanic the White Star Line was informed that there is no crane in the whole of great britain and Ireland available which is nearly big enough for this project.

So they started looking in foreign countries and engaged the service of a german logistics company that had one and was able to disassemble and transport it to Belfast.

After the german workers had finished assembling it at the docks they raised the german flag on top of it.

This immidiatly caused anger among the irish dock workers who said that a german flag has nothing to do on an irish dock.

They shouted a huge variety of insults up to the people on the crane who immidiatly started counter-insulting although both sides couldnt understand each other http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Luckily, the english foreman of the dock spoke fluent german and was also a very clever man. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

He saw that the situation was heating up and that the irish workers were already starting to arm themselves with sticks and stones.

He ran over to the crane to stop the dockworkers and explained that he will talk to the germans to clarify the situation.

The dockworkers asked the foreman that he should translate to the germans that they can take their lousy Kaiser and put him where the sun doesnt shine. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

He shouted the following up to the germans on the crane :

"Your irish friends kindly ask you not to raise your flag higher than the irish one"

The germans answered :

"Tell them that all irish are cowardly gay bedwetters and if they want to turn down our flag they shall come up and get it!"

He translated to the irish workers :

"The germans said that they apologize for this and suggest that the irish flag is brought up there beside their own one, they also suggest all workers should later have a drink together"

and shouted to the germans

"What about bringing the irish flag up there too ? Your Irish co-workers apologize if they should have insulted you and suggest that all should later have a drink together"

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Both sides were happy now and the work continued without problems http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

About that Crane, I lived in Belfast as a child before moving to the States. Though many miles away I could see the big yellow crane belonging to Harland & Wolf. And yes it was a huge crane. The problem with the German Flag stems from the fact that Northern Ireland is and was a commonwealth of the UK. Interesting enough was a POW camp located in South Ireland. It had unit insigna's from not only Axis POW's but Allied as well painted on the ceilings of the barracks. South Ireland remained neutral throuhout WW2. Aviators from both sides and yes U-Baot crews were all housed under one roof. This lead to great soccer games but most of all respect between all soldiers. Funny thing is that not too many escape attempts were ever noted. Rumor has it that the Irish Army Guards rarely had ammo loaded, but never let on. I love the Irish and Ireland!

Thats indeed a good work. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

It has suprisingly few errors, just some small typos and tiny grammatical errors which still reveal that german was not the mother tongue of the writer.

But overall , its a complex text so its an excellent translation work anyway. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Im not sure if my english knowledge is enough to translate it but i will try.

Give me some time.

Government of the General Gouvernement
Main department Propaganda

Announcement Nr.35

To the population of the General Gouvernement !

Due to an suggestion made by the main department propaganda within the government of the GG , a commitee of representatives of the polish population departed to Smolensk to convince themselves on the spot about the beastliness of the soviet pole murderers.

Through that, the polish population shall be teached about the horrible fate which would had awaited them when the soviets would had managed to enter the temporarily german occupied polish territory.

The material collected by the polish commitee will be made public through the press and other special measures after according edit.

In connection with that , the government will order an analogical excurion of an commitee consisting of all ethnic groups living in the GG to the concentration camp Auschwitz.

This excursion will proof how much more humanitarian the german facilities are with which help the mass liquidation of the polish population is conducted, compared to the bolshevistic methods.

Here ,the german science has accomplished enormous for european culture , instead of an cruel and primitive mass murder of the inconvenient population, one can see gas- and steam chambers, electrical plates etc. with which help thousands of poles can be transported from life to death in shortest time and in a way that honors the greatness of the german people.

Its is enough to point out that the crematory can incinerate 3000 corpses on a single day.

Additional excursions with special train journeys to concentration camps in Mauthausen,Oranienburg,Dachau, RavensbrŘck are planned in the upcoming summer months.

The leaders of all german departments within the GG are herewith ordered to place this announcement on public places to ensure the best reachable participation in the excursions.

My Step-Father passed away back in Dec, 2006. He served in the Merchant Marine in 1944, he was 80. You know they dont give military honors for the men who served in that branch of the service. Its a real shame, I felt he deserved it after the stories of the torpedos he watch going under his ship and somehow not exploding. Thats combat duty in my view, and should be recognised.

I've been fascinated with Russia and the USSR since I was 10 or so, though I don't really know why.

This is not so simple. In the past we had to learn Russian for min 12 years and from the other side English was forbidden in preliminary and many secondary schools ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

@ Celeon - is that first poster showing a Russian soldier holding a gun to a German officer? Do you know what the text says?

Its about the Katyn massacre.

Per wikipedia:

'German poster depicting executions of Polish military officers by the Soviets, with caption in Slovak: "Forest of the dead at Katyn."'

Russians blamed the Nazis, but officially admitted the truth in 1989.
