Hello all.
I haven't played SHIII in over 2 years and I'm wondering about the "latest and greatest"?

I have a new system which should now handle SH3, with mods, much better. As I recall (and from looking on the storage HD) I was running with patch 1.4, JSG Mod Enabler, WAC, and various other small mods, SH3 commander (I have 2.7 saved). I don't remember where it came from...but I had lots of traffic in the harbors, a canal out of Kiel and various other "things", and, I just don't remember where I got them? Did WAC come with any of the traffic or added canals? Or did I get this elsewhere? Perhaps RuB, as I have 1.45 also on the storage drive? Is it just my imagination or could parts of RuB be installed...without the entire thing?

Sheesh! It's going to take a long time to rebuild SH3 to where I had it...and then move it up.

This I know (I think? LOL)...I had WAC installed, I had extra traffic in the harbors, including guide boats for the minefields in "friendly" harbors, I had maps of minefields at target ports, I had a canal out of Kiel (I seem to remember some other additions with this canal??)

Geez...it's been so long. I'm trying to avoid a "Mod and see" attitude but I may have to resort to that unless any of this sounds familiar to you.

You should definitely take a look at the GWX 2.0 super mod. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Thanks guys...

Also, if you have a moment, what would you suggest for graphics settings (antialiasing, anistropic, etc., etc.) with my system and nVidia nHancer or Control Panel?

ASUS Rampage Extreme x48
Intel C2Q 9650 3.0ghz
4gb OCZ RAM
BFG GTX260, 896mb (x1)
SoundMAX X-fi

I'm really looking forward to getting back into SH with a system that allows great graphics without problems.

Whew.......That quite a system you've got yourself there, viciii3. I've been looking at the Rampage Extreme myself but finally gave up when I saw the price for it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

How do you like that Asus board?

OK...I'm downloading all the bits and pieces of GWX 2.1 as we speak. Can you tell me if it includes any harbor traffic, navigation map tools or any of the other small mods I used to have (Crush Depth, Depth Gauge Mod, Milk Cows, etc.) or will I load those after GWX install?

Tambor...so far I love the new system...and I haven't touched OCing of anything but the GTX 260. It's working beautifully with Flight Sim 2004. I've added an ASUS CPU heatsink and fan so, when I get into OCing the board, I'm good to go. Other than that the Rampage comes with built in heatpipes/sinks for all the major board components...it really is a gamer's board...I'm very happy with it! I am REALLY looking forward to SH3 on this machine.

Still would like to hear some thoughts on graphics settings, if anyone has any?

I'm sure I'll be back with many questions.

Thanks guys.

Just to make sure I understand the GWX 2.1 install...is the GWX21.exe an "update" to 2.0 and do I run it after I do a GWX2.0 install...or do I not use the GWX2.exe at all?

Thanks for any "clearing up". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Thanks, Tuddley. I'll give GWX a try (since I'm almost setup) but may yet go to WAC 3.0.

One question on SH3commander...will the GWX config files for SH3cmdr3.0 work with SH3cmdr 3.1 and later?
Thanks guys.

So much has changed with SH3. Most of my old mods are sitting forgotten with GWX2.1 available. The best part is that I can run the sim so much better now with the new machine. I had to give up running SH3 with WAC several years ago...it was just too slow on the old system...and I just couldn't bring myself to go "vanilla", y'know?

I've gotten most questions answered regarding GWX etc. I have run into a problem after completing my 1st GWX2.1 patrol so I'll be posting another thread in the Community Tech help. Hopefully someone can offer some advice.

The improvements to the game are pretty incredible and I'm looking forward to getting into a real wartime patrol!

Now that I have had a chance to complete a war patrol with GWX 2.1...I have more to say.

I am presently about 300km out of Wilhelmshaven. I am beat up, wiped out and barely floating. I am just trying to make it home. The old "easy" days of SH3 are apparently a thing of the past as I have had my butt pounded incessantly for every ton of shipping I have managed to kill...and there aren't that many tons. My old tactics for SH3 vanilla are, obviously, and painfully, a thing of the past. My first war patrol in GWX2.1 has left me scarred and beaten...but alive, thankfully. I am limping home...better for the lessons learned...but beat to crap anyway.

SOooo, you want to know what I think of the evolvement of SH3, after several years of absence? Install GWX2.1 and then tell me what YOU think! There are no more free rides. Mess up and get your *** POUNDED into the Atlantic mud! As I said...I am extremely thankful that I managed to limp my way home after my first wartime patrol.

It's a beautiful thing! Whether or whatever mods you choose to use...the SH3 community is the best! Gone are the days of shooting fish in a barrel. Thanks to all, I can now count on getting my butt kicked, and MAYBE making it home!

Yes...the changes available since my first foray are amazing...and welcome! I look forward to many more missions, hopefully not returning to base so messed up, but, it's all of my own doing.

Hey, I've been at it, on and off, since SHII. You know why? Because of the great community, the modders who offer all their hard work...FREE. The help and suggestions for those in a bind. It all adds up into a greaT PLACE.

Glad to hear you're enjoying GWX! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The increased difficulty makes us kaleuns more cautious, and therefore take fewer 'daring' risks (e.g. surface attacks in daylight, port raiding, aircraft duels, etc). The result is often a more realistic tonnage score, which is a good thing. I'd rather return to port feeling I've really 'earned' every ton sunk, rather than the old way many of us used to play SH3 (becoming an instant 'U-boat ace' by sinking 100/200K tons in a single patrol http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif )

Out of interest, what tactics were you trying to use that got you into trouble?

viciii3
11-16-2008, 09:04 AM
Tactics?? LOL..."Greed"! I finally managed to find a medium sized convoy with a few, spread out, "fat" targets. I shot through the first echelon, into the 2nd, at a whaler. I shot her towards the front, hoping she would drive herself under. I then lined up on a medium sizer in the 3rd echelon and got her with one shot. I dropped under the 1st echelon for an aft tube shot at another medium merchie and sunk her. By now the escorts were taking SERIOUS notice...but the darn whaler was still going. I kept looking at her and thinking, "I want that fat one!". She had slowed, a bit, and the proper thing to do would have been to slink away under the convoy and shadow her. Nope..."I've got time to get the big prize" sez I, thinking I could outwit the escorts long enough to put another torpedo in her...wrong! I eventually had 3 DD's circling and dropping DC's. I spent over an hour dodging, feinting...and taking some serious damage. I finally found a resting place on the bottom, not by choice as I couldn't pump and repair fast enough, and the escorts finally left...which I found amazing, they had me dead on if they had continued.

I got real lucky and don't plan on being too greedy from here on...there's no future in it!

Sounds like an exciting attack! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Sometimes the destroyers give up the hunt so that they can catch up with the convoy. Maybe that's why they left you alone...

The other thing you may now realise about GWX is that, if you want to sink a big ship in a convoy, it's better to hit it with a salvo of two torps to help ensure you sink it.

Most ships can be sunk with 1 torp, but it's riskier: aim for the engine room, then hopefully it'll at least slow down or stop, so you can finish it off after the convoy has moved on. Aiming for the bow like you did sometimes works too, but not that often in my experience.

Ships that you damage but which don't sink and carry on with the convoy can of course be attacked again if you retreat then do a fast 'end around' to re-intercept the convoy... BUT... In GWX, the convoys change their course a lot, especially as they approach coastal waters. And I don't mean zig-zagging - I mean big changes in course which could mean you lose all trace of the convoy during your end-around manoeuvre. It makes re-interceptions a lot trickier!

Another tatic that the escorts like to pull on you viciii3, say for example there are 3 of them. Two of them will finally give up and head off to rejoin the convoy, BUT the 3rd one will stay and keep you submerged until the convoy has moved off and changed course! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif
