Yeah, i though the same about the sound in FB. But when i switched from an AC 97 to a shiny Audigy, i could feel how stupid i was http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Audigy1 OEM here. Used to have an Audigy1 Gamer, but it died a month ago and took a mobo with it.

No problem, great excuse for upgrading to the AMD64 platform http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The new EAX1 setting in PF setup has improved audio in the game imo.

Oh? I am just planned to upgrade from AC97 to Audigy 2 ZS, and goes with a Plantonic headphone (which is an USB device) as well, so they don't mix well?

also, I heard that Plantonic headphone has it own DSP and can reduce CPU load, so I have 2 questions:

1. Is it gonna help?
2. If yes, do I still need an Audigy card?

soundstorm on current box, Audigy 1 on previous box.

Subjectively, I thought the Audigy was slightly better, but both are excellent.

Audigy 2 ZS now.

Previously nForce Sound Storm, not noticed much (if any difference) performance wise. But sounds better....but then I did add 7.1 speakers too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Audigy 2 ZS... Coupled with the Klipsch pro media's or my headphones....when I'm not listening to a P-38 or Dora do a fly by then I'm likely trying to find something subtle in favorite old tunes......man the electric piano intro in Steely Dan's Babylon Sister, bliss .

Gainwards Hollywood@Home 7.1 is my current card. I love the sound but I am still coming to grips with how all this works. I had a Creative 5.1 and thought it was awefull. THen I got Creative Platinum 5.1 and was still satisfied. This led to my using onboard AC97 for allmost a year. But when I built my current baby(PC), I opted for a soundcard and Gainward did not disapoint. The only thing is that turning on extensions in game will cause the sound to stop working. The quality of the sound however is awesome.

I'm running an Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum card. It's connected to an Onkyo 502 HT Receiver for Digital sound and the same receiver plus an old Akai 1030 for Analogue sound. Run in 4.0 surround 99% of the time.

Speakers are Logik nearfield monitors up front, vintage Allison 4's in the rear.

Soundblaster pci 128. This weekend after much tinkering decided to replace my Hercules Fortissimo III 7.1 card with this old fossil I had lying around somehwere to see if it would stop stuttering in Windows (XP and 2000). And yes it has... (haven't tried it in IL2 yet but I'm playing Half Life 2 with it now and it works fine)
Probably going to order an Audigy 2 this week.

Audigy 2ZS here - although recently have had onboard AC '97 (old P4) before that I had a AWE 64 (PII) and before that I had a Creative VIBRA 16 on my P-90 http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

sound wise it is hooked up to a Zalman 5.1 Channel Headphone Amplifier ZM-RSA, which has a pair of Zalman RS6F Headphones. Am rather impressed by this combo - great for games and DVD's - less so for music (good enough to do me 90% of the time at any rate - otherwise I use my Hi-Fi)

Shameless bumpage to try and get more votes on what sound system is used on PC's that actually play the game.

I'm considering upgrading to an Audigy of some kind to replace my onboard AC97 audio. I mainly use headphones, so I'm assuming that the only difference it'd make would be:

1) Better FPS in some games, since the AC97 would no longer be hogging CPU time. What kind of difference would it make in PF?

2) Better EAX effects. But what kind of difference does it make when the output is only stereo?

If there's anything else I haven't considered, feel free to point it out.

VIA AC'97 (Wave). not brilliant but works well enough and am happy with the sound (it's good for music).

After reading this thread I went out and bought an Audigy 2 ZS. While I don't see any dramtic framerate increase I must say I am amazed by the sound effect, even with the crappy earphone I have...

Go back to my question, so I did something wrong? should there be at least some noticable preformance difference? and what else I need to do to get to most out of this card? (e.g. a good earphone / headphone? any suggestion? plantonic USB version?)

FatDude, choose Sounblaster in the IL-2 setup under the sound tab. Post your diagnosis over in the Community help forum, but before you do that, run an Ad-Aware scan twice and Spybot scan once in safe mode to get rid of the spyware Creative gave you.

I think i have done the necessary change in the IL2Setup. Will tune it once more after office tonight...

and Creative Driver and software (I d/l the newest from the web) bring in spyware? you serious? I don't even think about it before, oh my... will check it tonight too...

for a reference, how many extra fps will such an upgrade give me? (in, let's say, black death)
now I am running AMD64 3500+, 6800GT, 1G Corasir RAM, with 2xQ AA and 2x AF it give me 22 fps in black death. adding a audigy give me just 1 extra fps...

LuckyBoy1

Yeah, I wasn't happy to learn that either. You want to just install the drivers only and then roto-root the spyware out again.

This has got me wondering...

I've been using a creative SB live value card that I've had for forever and never even thought to try the computers onboard sound system. It's a gigabyte ga7n400l motherboard nforce2 chipset and I believe it has the soundstorm onboard...hold on I'll check the manual...ok, onboard sound on my board is listed as alc650. Would I be better off to yank the old SBLive value and go with onboard???

Fatboy, you should be getting better fps than that. I have a similar rig with an Athlon 64 3400+ and am getting 37-40 fps average in perfect. I am just using a 9700 Pro so your machine should be smoking mine. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Did you do a clean driver install for your video card? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

FatBoyHK
11-26-2004, 09:57 AM
what water setting your are using? with water = 1, my rig can hit 55fps in blackdeath (VSync = off, 2xQAA and 2xAF)

and I did a testing by disablng the sound altogether... and the FPS is the same... does it mean something?
