Battle-Fields (http://www.battle-fields.com/joomla/index.php) has the two popular UK-Dedicated servers with a historically inspired mapset running. Until now, both servers were run with externals on.

We decided to give it a go with externals off on the 2nd server now and see if it works just as well or even better. We'd apprechiate if everyone gave it a try and give us some feedback. Our decision of how to run this server in the future will largely depend on it's popularity with the externals off settings.

Maps are optimized for externals on, so please forgive us if you find one or the other AI bomber in the plane selection that is not controllable with externals off.

The server is run by the Gennadich Server Commander. UK-D servers have a stats page, you need to register on our site to see them. For feedback, visit our forums.

Have fun! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Good news JtD.
I was on WarClouds since last month,'cause i don't want to fly with external views anymore...Oops I mean,i don't want see this damned F6 key to break down a surprise attack anylonger!

But,as a french virtual flyer,i get 172ms ping on WC-WF,which isn't bad,but 30ms ping on a UK server is...How to say that...clearly better! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

See you soon!

Yes, yes, yes! Finaly! I prefered UK2 compared to UK1 cause it has cockpit allways on. This option is soooo arcade... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

I hope some day UK2 will go full real.

EXcellent News!....i had previously avoided that server b/c i don't like flying with externals.....i don't have the time today, but tomorrow i'll jump on and give you my take! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If I do fly something other than Co-op its at UK-D2, I will not fly No-Cockpit servers(think its arcade, almost a cheat and defeats the purpose of it being a Sim)I dont use externals that much anyway other than when I spawn fresh on an airfield and sort out which direction on the runway Im going to go, and maybe the odd flip to exterior to check my bomb hits, this is refreshing and will definitely improve the realism even further on UK-D2 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Brilliant news!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I love UK Dedicated 2 but the F6 cheat was sometimes a bit too obvious. I imagine this can only make it better. Good move!

I tend to like the externals, for I often find myself on unfamiliar airbases and it lets me get my bearings before I taxi for the runway. After that I stay strictly inside, fly full pit and never use padlocks.....even on 334th Dedicated where everybody else is flying wonder woman view and using padlocks.

We had some good runs on UK2 eh http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Now with externals off we can have even more fun i reckon, hopefully damn soon!

Please turn the externals back on!
Finding your way around an unknown airbase is no fun with them off.
Those who don't like them don't have to use them!

Externals off....great.

However, there has got to be a better way to find taxiway to runway for all these servers.

F4 padlock is totally fair in my mind. It's nothing like F6 as it doesn't lock on - when the plane goes out of view, lock is lost. It allows people without track ir a chance.

Besides, what's more real, moving a mouse to look around or the virtual head moving itself in line with the enemy?

You can have cockpit off and externals on??

Good news.
Externals are drawback for me.
I just hope that UK_ded2 will eventually lost ugly padlock too.

I have noticed that now people actually play on UK_ded2 more.

You have minimap path.
You should have no problems with orientating whatsoever.

Why ruin one of the only good servers on HL with more of that full difficulty nonsense, when one could go to just about ANY of the hundreds of servers on HL to get that ****?

A good way to find your way to the runway is to bail out and use the externals you get from that. Another way is to record a track and watch it. I usually go with the latter method, allows you to quickly get used to the entire map. Esp. true for our maps, because you will have static cams above most of the targets.

Good question DDT, that's why it's a trial and not a decision.

Clearly a TiR user.

PL on is *more* realistic than PL off. Plus it reduces an otherwise unfair advantage for TiR users (which is why so many are against PL, truthfully, though they'd never admit it).

Before you start - Oleg himself even stated as much (that PL on is more realistic).

It's really quite simple and logical. We are staring at the virtual world through a small flat window. One that not only robs us of peripheral vision, and reduces depth perception, but also is greatly limited in resolution, visual distance, and most importantly, size (everything is compressed in the "normal" and wide views, the only time we see close to real size is with full zoom and then we are basically looking through a tube and have amplified control inputs to boot).

All of that is to say nothing of the crappy and clunky view control methods we are forced to use. Even TiR is clunky. How often do you look left by turning your head a fraction of an inch while looking in the *opposite* direction with your eyes (in the real world)? You don't. (And of course you don't have to hold your head steady IRL to look straight ahead either)

If we were using full, hemispherical dome screens, PL would be unecessary. If Oleg's PL locked at unrealisitic ranges, or on to targets that weren't centered in your view, or did not break when targets got obsucured by objects (such as clouds, mountains, your plane, other planes, etc), or of there were no limits on camera tracking (pan and tilt) - then PL would be a "cheat" or "unrealistic". However, none of that is the case. Oleg has got it right. And is right when he said that having it on is more realistic. (he made that comment here, somewhere, a looong time ago)

Furthermore, you don't have to use PL if you don't like it.

"Finding your way around an unknown airbase" has nothing to do with the map path. He's talking about trying to find the bleedin' runway. I know exactly what he's talking about and he's right, it sucks balls.

This is a combat sim. The whole point is combat. Not taxiing around some airbase without leaning out or having any help from the ground. M$FS is around if that really is so desired.

Plus, along those same lines, sometimes a long wait is necessary to get to altitude. It sucks and is boring as hell. Offline, time compression is heavily used to cut out that pointless wait time (time that is otherwise literally wasted, never to return and providing nothing in it's expenditure), but online, there is no time compression, so externals are used to pass that time. Take screen shots, look at the target (if bombing), find where the scrum is so you don't spend hours wandering aimlessly, look at your own plain, marvel at the overall detail, etc, etc.

Again, if you don't like them, don't use them. It's really quite simple.

The UK Dedicated's servers ar two of the best dogfight servers on HL (imo). They are very much appreciated. There are many others that already have 'full real' or 'no external' settings. It would be a real shame to see one of the only decent choices available for 'externals on' flying dissapear.

I was there for a while tonight and it's great, also since I'm in Europe ping was great and everything was VERY smooth, low number of players though http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

It may be more realistic(IMO not) but I don't use it as it confuses me too much, I look around with my hatswitch emulating mouse, also I think Kuna was talking about notorious and really arcade F6 padlock, I guess some people hate being bounced without even seeing the guy who shot them, well so do I but that only makes me more carefull http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Look at the ground, you will see from where you can and can not take off, when in the air, look at the base and that's it, next time no worries, not to mention that on most bases you simply turn left or right and firewall the throtthle.
Now don't get me wrong, I respect your points, but try to understand mine, because this little details are fun for me as much as they are spoilers for you http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well it is a move in the right direction to have no externals.

Now get rid of the air-starts and no-vulching rules, those are for sissies. The kind of person who is interested in realistic settings is not going to be interested in air-starts and non-historical chivalry. Also get some decent AAA going at the bases and elswhere.

F6 is tied to externals. He was talking about inside padlock. And given that it offsets so much of the unrealistic limitations of the interface, it IS more realisitic to have it, than to not. There's really no 2 ways about it.

Fine for tricycles. Anything else sucks balls. Especially the single strip/no taxi-way bases.

The point is, as mentioned earlier, there are hundreds of servers on HL that run full difficulty or nearly so. UK Ded2 was the ONLY good server left. Why make it a clone of every other one?

So you see, it's not about not respecting your prefernces, because you can go anywhere any time and have that. If anything, by advocating the ruination of the only remaining good server, it is you who are being intolerant.

We have less air starts than say Spit vs. 109 and I have seen you there quite often.

Massive AAA has more cons than pros so we avoid it when acceptable.
