Online exclusivly here. To me the irradict AI ruins offline play. They either do something completely stupid or they pull off some incredible manuever thats impossible in real life. Hopefully strides will be made to include greatly improved AI in BoB.

1. Offline Campaigning almost exclusively now. I just haven`t the time for online. The AI is very good and since I play against it exclusively I`ve seen many gems that have improved over time. It isn`t perfect but is the best combat flight sim AI I`ve seen to date.

2. I like to make my own custom skins, but haven`t had time to do anything dramatic or even particularly good.

I use the QMB only to test an aircraft and obtain the optimum joystick configurations/convergence/ ground attack settings. I NEVER pretend to test AI by it or use it to try and tell me whether the FMs/DMs are `porked/uber` or not.

I never touch FMB (although I used to do it to create maps for online play). Offline I don`t because I don`t like knowing what`s going to happen or who i`m going to meet and how many. It`s just not realistic. Now if there was a kind of Dynamic FMB that had random options plus would work as an entire Campaign I`d give it a go.
That`s about it.

60% for me. Online, offline and mission/campaign building.

I have to disagree with your concept that modelling is part of the game. You can't build models with PF or IL-2. You need other software to do that. Same with skinning. Not flaming you or anything, but neither of those two things are actually part of the sim so I think it distorts your poll just a little to include them. Just my opinion on that, interseting poll regardless.

40% for me

I play offline. I'm very deep into my Russian campaign and had a nice Finnish campaign going until I had some issues with my PC and had to start over.

I've only played online a couple times and just never cared much for it.

Tried skinning once, figured I'd leave it to the pros.

I used to mess around with the FMB quite a bit, but I've been having some issues with it lately that I need to resolve before I can get back to making missions.

Predominantly %40 although I occasionaly flirt with 60 to 80 % when I am feeling frisky http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Online has been my main theater of operation till recently then I discoverd its a hell of a lot more fun terrorising the AI than being gang banged by a bunch of strangers online. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

However I will no doubt get my self back online again soon as fankly the ai dont cus biatch and whine so good.

Thank you for the kind comments, we are all amateurs though, we just try to please, and i think I can say that for all of the skinning fraternity http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I mostly play off-line, make my own missions, use other folks skins. I have most fun with early war **** planes and my beloved Spitfire, I look forward to the time when we have the full set.

The AI is not very good but some planes are a bit more challenging, the Ki-46 for example. The FW-190s under AI command are all cannon fodder, which is a shame as I understand there are some real killers flying them on-line.

I would love to play on-line but (continued) lack of rudder input at this time, lag, and the fact it's only really meaningful if you play full switched, and I'm dead meat on those servers without rudder or that Track IR thingy. And I really hate that lag thing, get nicely lined up...freeze, they're gone...you die. In a few years Track IR'll be married to visor mounted high definition screens and we will all have 50 Meg/s connections and I'll have some rudder pedals. I'll see you all then. I trust nobodies going anywhere?

Yep. Good question. I`ve been flying IL2 for 2 years ish and the planes I`ve flown are:

B239-Rare (Nice to fly, like an AXIS I16!)
All Hurricanes, -A lot.
All Spits, -A lot.
Lagg3- A lot.
P38 types -Rare.
P51 - Rare.
P40- Medium.
P400 - (not that bad...) Rare.
P39 - Very rare. I really must fly it more.
Zeros, oscar? - Very rare.
IL2 (The plane that started it all) - Very rare, - but nice.
Yak. -Very rare.
Migs3UD/shvak/2XUB. - Medium
I16 24/18 - A lot.
Stuka - once (just to see what it was like to sit in).
bf109s various . - Rare.
P11 - Rare
Gladiator. - Rare
Beaufighter. - Rare.
F4F-4. - Rare.
FW- Very rare.

So really, the only planes I`ve flown frequently are the Spits/Hurris/Laggs and I16s. That leaves a LOT of aircraft barely touched in this sim and people are asking for more?

The Mosquito, Typhoon and Tempest would be nice, I know I`d fly them a lot. But let`s face it, all this in ONE SIM? Unheard of. We are spolit badly indeed.

Interesting question, Chuck.

I pretty much play the campaigns/single missions and I also creat missions. I fly online once in a while. I don't do modelling or skinning.

Also, I've flown every plane in the sim at one time or another. Mostly right around the time they come out for a bit. I primarily fly the 109.

Offline campaigns and single missions. Practice sometimes on QMB. Tried online a few times. Can't understand why people like online.

JR_Greenhorn
02-01-2005, 06:18 PM
I play exclusively offline, and I spend more time in the FMB than I do actually flying. I don't make skins, but I spend a lot of time browsing and downloading them--it's very addicting! I like the new Nosearts even more, but I wish they would be expanded to be used on more planes.

There is so much within the game to do!
Flying every plane is no small feat, but is a common pursuit.
How many of you have actually tugged gliders with the Bf 110?
Have you ever given the BI-1 an honest chance; that is, fly it as a plane and not just a curiosity?
I would love to try air racing, but its kind of pointless offline.
Since PF, one has the opportunity to try to land every planetype possible on a carrier, which is quite challenging and entertaining.

I use all but 3D modeling. Funny enough I do cg for a living, but flightsim time shouldn't be work!

I'd play online more, but I still stink too much to bother.

I guess I have flown, hmm... let me think... roughly 70 % of the aircrafts. Absolute top is Bf-109. I suppose that 80% of my piloting goes with the Bf-109. That´s what it has been ever since the beginning.

I've flown almost exclusively offline (Campaigns), but have played around with skins a little as well. I just very recently flew online for the very first time, on a couple of Ivan's Coops in HL (callsign Hitchhiker). Great fun, even though I am a complete and utter moronic noob. I fully look forward to embarrassing myself more in the time to come http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

OT - Chuck_Older : There was an interesting segment on 'Antiques Roadshow' the other night from Nebraska which might interest you. A guy had brought in some AVG historic memorabilia, including an incredibly rare silk HQ flag for the Flying Tigers valued at $20-40K. They discussed briefly some Tigers history and stories about a Mr. Bill Smith. Neat stuff, and having read your earlier posts on the subject I was very interested.

To me is online where this sim really shines, flying full switch coordinating attacks with my wingman/flight is as close as real as it can get, in fact I fly 100% online lately.

I'm one of those "fly offline, like to mess around with the FMB"-types. FMB takes a lot of time, but is really, really neat. Having tried my hand on skinning, i very much second SeaFires comment. Some of the skinning guys are really good (Taylortony among them).

I really haven't had the chance to fly much online, a situation I hope to remedy in the future.

Plane-wise, I mostly fly early war allied planes, around 20% of the plane set.

bhunter2112
02-01-2005, 11:50 PM
20% percent here. I mainly use the FMB to make missions and then play all involved in the engagement. lots of ramdom times and heights. historical accuracy.
1.I have never skined o modelled
2.need to get a better rig to do the campaigns and single missions. I will stutter with to many planes or big map (lenningrad). I like a completely flowing gameplay. max graphics.
3. online a few times to much drama. everyone trying to do something differant. No historical accuracy.

I play online (coop and DF) and offline, make missions as I feel the need for a particular mission, skin likewise. When I've been in a squad I've done a lot of mission building for squad missions, and skinning or skin modifying for squad members.

I'm not equipped for 3D Modelling but would give it a go if I had the time, information resources and required software.

Longjocks
02-02-2005, 02:24 AM
Going by the 'rules' of this thread I guess I mainly count as a 40%. I'm mainly in the QMB with the occasional MP flight against mates. I have done skinning before, but only a little and I haven't released any publicly.

Oh, I have indeed flown every plane, although most I've only taken for one 'mission' in the QMB.

JG54_Arnie
02-02-2005, 04:51 AM
Hmm, nice question in itself, but weird poll options in my opinion. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif At least, when it comes to modeling as you cannot put planes into the game yourself and it's not something thats part of the sim. Skinning perhaps is, I can see that alright http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Haven't flown every plane in the sim, but most of them untill PF came out.. I think. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Hardly ever fly russian planes, usually a P-something if on the red side, but my favourite is the FW-190A4 or 6. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Dunno, guess the percentage of what I use compared to what is possible is a bit low. Around 40 percent maybe. Most of my time is spend online for sure!

x6BL_Brando
02-02-2005, 05:20 AM
Well, I play every night in HyperLobby for 3 or 4 hours - have done since Sturmovik came out. So a big, fat 20% there. I have a couple of offline campaigns running, but with no particular involvement. I'm using them a) to practice with closed cockpit and short icons, and b) bombing practice. 18% http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
I really enjoy using the Full Mission Builder. I'm not as prolific as some people but I've written maybe 50 coop missions now, great fun. 20%
I rely on the community for my skins, and I wouldn't have a clue about 3D modelling.....

60% then, give or take - in terms of 24/7 I have to admit that IL2 takes up 20% of my life. How scary is that!?!

Not included is the time spent tweaking up my rig, and the few rigs that I've built for other FB-pilots........roll on Spring....I think I need to get out for a while! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

AWL_Spinner
02-02-2005, 07:41 AM
Probably about 40-50%.

I fly online most of the time in a squad. Sometimes on my own. Fly about two community offline campaigns a year which, by and large, have been brilliant. Many of the rarely seen features of the sim I've discovered in user built campaigns.

I've dabbled with the FMB, and built a couple of missions. I play the QMB every once in a while.

I've never looked at the object viewer. I've probably only flown about 70% of the aircraft in the sim, and spend 95% of my time in about ten of them.

I fly offline mostly and got campaigns going with most every plane except the Japanese planes. I am using the PF stand alone version tho.

ElAurens
02-02-2005, 11:03 AM
Well I really use about 47%..lol.

I am almost exclusively online. There is nothing, and I repeat nothing, like human opponents. Every now and then I go through the motions of an offline carrier, but I usually quit after the first mission. They are either boring or so lopsided in favor of the enemy that it is not even entertaining. (6000 P39s vs. 4 Ki43s anyone?)

I've done some skinning. Not much, but some.

Wilburnator
02-02-2005, 11:15 AM
60% for me, but you're assigning too much of a percentage to skinning, mission building and modeling. This is a sim, online and offline play should account for 90%, all other aspects should make up the rest. I am not in any way trying to take away from those who choose to do these things, not one bit. But sims are for simming. The game was created to be played, the rest is gravy.

Chuck_Older
02-02-2005, 12:11 PM
http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I realise that assigning percentages to these things isn't the best way...like I said, it's convenient. Things like skinning and modelling...well, you can do them in the sim, and I'm not going to come up with formulae to determine what percentage of the whole say, skinning is. This is just a rough estimate to see how many folks would say that their involvement is roughly 60% or 40% or whatever

It seems that many members of the community are fairly involved with the sim, which is good news

One of the points of this is that soon, dev work will be reaching a stage (hopefully) on BoB in which they determine some of the finer points of how the sim will work.

Knowing what you want is a good thing; you can ask for it. So say you're a skinner. Well, why shouldn't BoB have more tools available in-game? Even something simple like a message that tells you your skin file is too big to work in-game would be nice

So think about the aspects of the sim you like and dislike, and how much you use or ignore those features, and you can begin to prioritize what you want in future sims

WTE_Galway

somewhat unfair survey in a way as it is going to be biased towrds online players

everything except 3D modelling .. and that requires a $3000 bit of software

Fliegeroffizier
02-02-2005, 05:31 PM
I am only a 20% user, by the survey parameters/options....I fly exclusively Offline after visiting/experimenting with the ONline community for a few months...Every time the subject comes up, the logic leads to the conclusion that 90-95% of IL2/FB/PF owners are exclusively OFFline(even Oleg admitted this fact some time ago)...

...but, anyway, a category not mentioned in the poll/survey would be Movie-Making/Image-Making from screencaptures: That is a small niche, but for me it amounts to 80% of my time with FB/PF(much of which is time required working with/on my WebSite...see SigBlock below)...

Oleg's product(s) IL2/FB/PF offer Many interesting aspects/niches beyond just the basic "fly-and-fight" flight sim. It's why I always say that it has been worth Every penny spent!!

this thread serves as a timely reminder of just how much a person can do with this sim, aside from flying it, which is a beautiful thing all by itself.

I use the FMB and fly offline exclusively...my own missions - community designed campaigns and the DCG...

Chuck it was a great idea to remind everyone just how deep this software is...and filmaking is another aspect that seems to me to be a really cool feature to get involved with.

About 60% here. Offline, dabble in skinning and QMB. Also use QMT to change single missions to suit. Acually the only skin I've done so far was with Paint and I believe you wrote the notes on how-to. Just d/l'd GIMP the other day, so now to figure that out.
