few minutes ago in Zeke vs Wildcat server i was chasing one f4f in ki61....with full ammo load from close range i filled him with all my guns....in fuselage, wings, cockpit...everywhere..and numerous time the same thing happens - f4f still flying with little smoke! I had no prob shootin down p40 in ki61 on example...with zeke i could kill anything....so whats the prob here? Im not newbie ofcourse..flyin this sh*** back from 2001. so it wasnt bad gunnery....

reason 1: the version of the Ki61 is armed with 4 machine guns (no cannon).
reason 2: the Wildcat is one tough SOB.

Saburo Saki recounts in Samurai that he put an estimated 500 (!) rounds of 7.62 MG ammo into a Wilcat and the bird could still fly and fight. He eventually turned his cannon on it and destroyed the F4F but everyhing I have ever heard or read accounts the Wildcat as one of the most toughly built aircraft of the war.

Grumman wasn't called the 'iron works' without reason.

Because of calling this sim "sh***" it pays back by messing with your ammo rounds. Clever little thing don't you think http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

NORAD ur right.....F4F was one tough SOB but it wasnt a tank in the air....it should go down if u filled him with 4 mgs spending all of ur ammo load

Sometimes those Grummans could take a lot of punishment:

"...Sakai had full confidence in his Zero 's ability to destroy the quarry using only his machine guns. He double?checked that his 20mm cannon was switched off and moved closer. The Wildcat crossed the coast just West of the Bonegi River, still eighteen arduous miles short of Red Beach, but at least over land. Unbeknown to Sakai, his rival had reached the reasoned judgment that it was time to bail out. Sakai was taken by surprise when the Grumman snapped into straight and level flight. He checked his own tail, then closed in. Now closer than he had ever been to a Wildcat, its appearance and the moment moved him sufficiently that he groped for his beloved Leica camera and in a grand example of eccentricity, savored this moment by taking a photograph for his private collection. Sakai discarded the camera to the side of the cockpit, closed to fifty metres, and fired a stream of 7.7mm projectiles at the Grumman, by his estimate between five to six hundred rounds. Incredibly they had no apparent effect. Sakai at this stage thought it astounding at how a Zero, if subjected to similar punishment, would by now be a ball of flame. He contemplated the Wildcat 's rudder, ripped to shreds, looking like an old torn piece of rag. The steadfast nature of the pursuit and the opportunity to witness a formidable enemy at such close distance briefly lulled the Japanese ace into complacency. He fire walled the Mitsubishi 's throttle to get closer, but was startled to find that his eagerness had lurched him ahead of the Grumman. Sakai cringed knowing he had placed himself cleanly in front of six Brownings. But nothing happened and Sakai then realized that at this critical moment that this had been a onesided combat his opponent for whatever reason lacked teeth. He dropped back, this time falling into formation slightly left of the straightandlevel Grumman. He had previously savored the luxury of taking a photograph, now he would go a step further and examine the man in the machine...."

which ki61 version? Because Hei has twin mausers (20mm) and twin HO103s , should be very deadly armament.. Otsu has four HMGs, infact quite good armament as well, though the japanese HMGs feel extremely weak in this game.. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif Ko is kinda pathetic, two LMG and HGM ,, very hard to bring down a Wildcat with these weapons.

Interestingly enough...Southerland's Wildcat was later found:

interesting thing is that Sakai spared his life that day (despite the fact that usn pilot downed his friend just minutes before http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)... and later in the war Southerland became an ace...."Saburo Sakai mercy over java jungle" is also well known story when he spared C47 with children, wounded soldiers and a woman (much later after the war he met with that woman)

tvirdi what was your ping in the server? I to find the wildcats strong when flying the ki61 early models same with the hellcat. But same goes for flying the wildcat or p40 vs the ki61 which takes incrediable damage as well both wings having gapping holes, Oil splash ruins you vision completely but is equally as tough. But the zeke cannon will tear the wings off in one burst under .20 range on both the wildcat and ki61.

Another thing I find odd is many of the osprey books say the ki61 was a greatfighter better then the bf109E F G in climb dive low and high speed manueverability. The japanese also hated the heavier g model and its lack of manuverability low and high speed.

Same as the ki43 when changing to the ki44.

The problem with this game is they think all small caliber gun should be useless when they were the main dogfighter weapon. Aircraft are all extremely flamable from thier fueltanks and it only takes a 3 second burst to put an ac in flames selfsealing tanks or not.

For example see here.

Thats another thing bigbear and Im glad you pointed it out, much of the japanese ammo was made by civilians in china and japan, not factory mass produced, very poor metals and quality from lack of supplies, much of the metals for ammo came from chinese territory as well as chinese slave labor.
