Hey guys,

I've had these pictures for a long time but only now did it occur to me to post them here. I'm from Mühldorf am Inn, a small town 79 km from Munich. During World War II, there was a secret aircraft bunker being constructed here to produce fighter aircraft. Construction began sometime in 1944 when Allied bombing was at its height. Slave laborers, mostly Hungarian Jews, were used and many died from lack of winter clothing in the winters and poor nourishment. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

I took the pics on two different occ***ions. The first occ***ion was a memorial event dedicated to those who lost their lives building this bunker, among them, a now famous Jew by the name of Max Mannheimer- also a former worker on the bunker who survived. On the second occ***ion, I parked our family car under it to demonstrate how big this place is.

About the bunker, it was over 400 meters long, 33 meters wide (the curved roof was 88 meters wide) and the concrete roof thickness was 3 meters. I've lived here most of my life and I've never known about this bunker. Once I heard about it, I set off on numerous occ***ions to find it in the forest it is located in: without hope. I was told that during the war, trees were planted on the roof to help conceil it from Allied reconaissance flights. To my understanding, it was never fully utilized as a factory because the war ended shortly after its construction. But I'll probably have to read up on that, I might be wrong. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Today, only one "section" of the bunker remains. The rest having been blow up by the occupying American forces. These are some selected pictures. You won't find much info in English on the web about this bunker. Most of the sites are in German. Enjoy. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The collapsed remains of the rest of the bunker. The person in the orange jacket provides a nice feel of how big this thing was...

That's huge and quite surreal sight! Doesn't look too safe to wander under though.
Heh, there are bits bigger than your car fallen from the roof and sitting right next to it. Looks almost like a toy car.

I once read something about this place, a long time ago. It´s not to far away from me either. I´m near Bamberg. I´ll definitely have to go see it this summer.

Interested in being a tour guide when I go Christian? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You know in times of war we as a species can do amazing things. But in a time of peace? We can't even tie our shoe laces!
We just don't make much sence as a species!

That being said I'm still simply astounded by this structure, I'll send it off to my Civi brother. I'm sure he'll love it!

I know what you mean exactly! When I visited those Dunkirk bunkers and Verdun (huge World War I battle sight with incredible carnage...), I could "feel" something in the air. It was hard to describe but you couldn't help feel that this place was historical and had some sort of presence absent in other places. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Here's some more pictures of it. It's the family ride. Dad thought a Mercedes would keep the family safe and the thing feels solid and we're quite happy with it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Sadly not. I heard it's covered and "off limits". If you can get a hold of Guido Knopp's "Der verdammte Krieg" video series (in German), he has small video tours of parts of the bunker: which appear FLOODED! The tour isn't very long nor elaborate, but you at least get to see partially flooded portions of the bunker. You'll mostly see hallways and stuff like that. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Visiting Normandy beaches is also very eerie.

You had a feeling like it just happened "yesterday". Hard to describe, but it wasn't "just any old place".

Also, the part I visited was VERY flat - made me cringe just to think about storming ashore there...

Great pictures there, somehow it doesn't look safe to park your car there under the dome! If you visit Civil War battlefields in America you do get the feeling that something happened there. Almost like your not alone even if there are other people standing near there. Not sure I would visit some of the bunkers in Europe. Its a little un-nerving since I read that in Dresden after the cleanup was complete someone found victims in hidden bunkers 2years later http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif Its all very sad how so many suffered.

Nice family car there http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thanks for posting the pitures!
