My beard and mustache contains red in it... and so do some members of my family. The thinking is that one of the Nordic invasions of England introduced that little trait. Also...Canada is on that map http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Well, Sweden occupied large parts of northern Germany for a couple of hundred years. The last part that was swedish (Wismar) was returned in 1903. That kind of qualifes northern Germany as nordic http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Myself I'm from Sweden, though my mothers family come from Estonia and fled to Sweden in late 1944 when the russians invaded Estonia. An interesting escape which included their ship beeing strafed by a 109...

Heck, "muminsvenska" is very popular in Sweden (and I think everyone has always liked it). One problem is that the person making it soar lately is Mark Levengood so if your'e straight it's a bit of a problem http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif He is regularly voted as one of the most popular swedes and he speaks pure "muminsvenska". Seriously though - I think I can speak for all swedes that "finlandssvenska" (finnish-swedish) has always been a popular swedish dialect. I had a discussion with a large group of swedes lately regarding their favorite swedish dialects. The top candidates where:

No 1. Norrländska (northern swedish) - People speaking this where considered to sound calm, honest and genuine - and at the same time it has an underlying "weight".

No 2. Finlandssvenska (finnish-swedish) - Similar as above: calm, honest and down to earth. It lacks the manly "power" of northern swedish (lots of beefy miners up there), and is more associated with a good hearted attitude.

No 3. Göteborgska (spoken in Gothemburg) - People speaking this are seen as happy people that are down to earth and are open to people they don't know.

Note should be taken that most of the jury was from southern Sweden...

And something about Finnish weather also:

+15 'C / 59 'F
This is as warm as it gets in Finland, so we'll start here. People in Spain wear winter-coats and gloves. The Finns are out in the sun, getting a tan.

+10 'C / 50 'F
The French are trying in vain to start their central heating. The Finns plant flowers in their gardens.

+5 'C / 41 'F
Italian cars won't start, The Finns are cruising in cabriolets.

0 'C / 32 'F
Distilled water freezes. The water in Vantaa river (in Finland) gets a little thicker.

-5 'C / 23 'F
People in California almost freeze to death. The Finns have their final barbecue before winter.

-10 'C / 14 'F
The Brits start the heat in their houses. The Finns start using long sleeves.

-20 'C / -4 'F
The Aussies flee from Mallorca. The Finns end their Midsummer celebrations. Autumn is here.

-30 'C / -22 'F
People in Greece die from the cold and disappear from the face of the earth. The Finns start drying their laundry indoors.

-40 'C / -40 'F
Paris starts cracking in the cold. The Finns stand in line at the hotdog stands.

-50 'C / -58 'F
Polar bears start evacuating the North Pole. The Finnish army postpones their winter survival training awaiting real winter weather.

-60 'C / -76 'F
Korvatunturi (the home for Santa Claus) freezes. The Finns rent a movie and stay indoors.

-70 'C / -94 'F
The false Santa moves south. The Finns get frustrated since they can't store their Kossu (Koskenkorva vodka) outdoors. The Finnish army goes out on winter survival training.

-183 'C / -297.4 'F
Microbes in food don't survive. The Finnish cows complain that the farmers' hands are cold.

-273 'C / -459.4 'F
ALL atom-based movement halts. The Finns start saying "Perkele, it's cold outside today."

-300 'C / -508 'F
Hell freezes over, Finland wins the Eurovision Song Contest (we did that, so basicly hell has already frozen)

I really loved the beauty of the nature there and how easily you can find yourself a nice "mökki" by a lake and just totally relax http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
We went first to see her brother who lives there, and he said he couldn't come back living here in Switzerland, everytime he comes back he finds that people here are really much more stressed.

I really don't wish to incite a war betwen neighbours, here. I love Finland and Sweden too. Both are great coutnries with their own special beauty!

Last summer I traveled twice through Sweden, taking the inland road going south and the coastal route back up north and, man, that was one hell of a trip!

Most impressive was perhaps this not so little bridge aross the Ängermanälv!

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/Kjetil_Aakra/sommer2006177.jpg

I was very impressed by the vastness of Sweden compared to thin little Norway, you have a lot of wilderness there, and I suspect Finland is much the same (have only seen the extreme Northeastern part).

However, Finland, and to a large degree, Sweden, appear very two-dimensional to a Norwegian from the West coast (like me). We are used to steep mountainsides and waterfalls like this:

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/Kjetil_Aakra/Samletur2005013.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/Kjetil_Aakra/Samletur2005016.jpg

Spectacular mountains may be found in Northern Norway too, whihc is why I feel at home here. Here's one of the most breathtaking, Mt. Otertind, photographed on a rather cloudy day:

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/Kjetil_Aakra/danmarkstur_sept2005043.jpg
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b39/Kjetil_Aakra/danmarkstur_sept2005036.jpg

We Scandinaviands should jointly be proud of our nations, between us we have some of the most beautiful and characteristic landscapes in the world, I think!

Regarding the nature in our countries, I dont see anything better than the other, just that Norden has Damn beatiful and different landscapes.

In the Summer, The Swedish west coast is one of my favourites. but I think I would enjoy being anywere in Norden during a good summer.

I have travelled a lot but I still think that the Nordic countries have more good looking women (percentagewize) than anywhere else.

Theory is that the Vikings vacuum cleaned the neighbouring countries on their rampages not only of gold and other valubles but also found the time to take any wench worth having back home http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

My mother's generation was the first to marry outside of Norwegian decent, and my father's father was the first generation to marry out of Danish decent. My father's family has always been touchy about the careless using the Swedish spelling of our surname, and not the proper Danish spelling.

My family and many others in the region still cling to our Scandinavian ancestry with pride. Those of Danish decent still poke fun at those of Swedish decent, and those of Swedish decent still poke fun at those of Danish decent. Sometimes you run across the odd Finn, but everybody pokes fun at those of us of Norwegian decent. However, those of Norwegian decent cling to their ancestry and traditions much more than any other, at least where I'm from.

I grew up about 30 miles from a town where Norwegian is still spoken as frequently as English. Many local churches offer at least one service that's entirely in Norwegian during the year. Around Christmas, it isn't hard to find a church offering a lutefisk supper nearly every weekend of December. As children, my grandmother taught each of my generation how to make lefse, a treat still enjoyed year round. It's a genrations-long problem to stop people from calling kumla, klube. (you'll have to forgive my spelling on these if you recognize them, these are oral traditions to me, not written)

I know most of you that still live "in country" probably consider those of us over here as some sort of deserters or bastard children, but I think it's ironic to see banter like this among you natives after becoming so used to it growing up. Obviously, much has changed after a half dozen generations of separation, but know that there is a soft spot in the hearts of we Americans that still consider Scandinavian countries our ancestral homes.

I don't think you need to worry about that Greenhorn... I think most of us think it's pretty cool that the scandinavian communities over there are still going strong... although from what I've heard from locals over here who've visited those places over there in the states the people speak in a very old fashioned manner, which doesn't come as a surprise considering that the immigration from here to over there happened a long time ago... but it must sound funny and cool at the same time though...

I have to say, after returning to Denmark, I do not remember there being so many attractive women wandering the streets as I have seen in the last couple of weeks here! Why oh why did I stay in Scotland for so long???

I think it's a little funny to read posts like these, because we who are still in the 'old countries' think it is nice that the emigrants and their ancestors still holds on to the scandinavian language, customs, food etc, even after so many generations has passed.

But at the same time, it is not very popular that todays imigrants in Norway from for instance Pakistan and Iraq do exactly the same! We accuse them for not beein interrested in integration with the norwegian culture and society, they are making funny-smelling food, etc.
Like we don't make food that smells like it has been dead for ages? How about 'Rakfisk' or 'Surstrøming'?

So what we consider a good thing among emigrants from Scandinavia, we consider a bad thing among imigrants to Scandinavia. Strange.

Hmm....

Wisconsin or Minnisota? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

My family is from The North West part of Wisconsin. Where just about everyone has a lot of Norwiegen in them.. My mothers fathers side came over from Prussia in the 1840's by the time she was born there was pretty much no German left. Her Mothers side came from Saxony, in the 1930's not much German left there either.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

My dads side of the family, pretty much all Norwiegen except for one great grandmother that was Swedish. Arguments on the farm would slip back and forth between Norwiegen and English depending on the kind of point that had to be made. When I started grade school in Milwaukee I had a pretty noticable accent and they wanted to send me to speech classes. As far as I knew when I was five R's were for rolling and you and du could be used interchangably.

Depending on what kind of neighborhood you are in you either hear stupid norwiegen jokes or crazy swede jokes. Oddly enough they are the same jokes with one side or the other as the punch line. I never saw then really used in a mean spirited way.. They are more of a way to celebrate each others differences and sameness all together. Also, growing up in that environment taught me the importance of being able to tell an entertaining story. Folks who claim that Europeans are lacking any sort of stron oral traditions should try spending some time at a wedding reception in Sand Creek, or Bloomer... There they would find folks that judge each other on these things. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Me and my brother have been thinking about throwing a constitution day party this year. We were going to have a big noisey party in the back yard and then drive around town have drunk with Gaate blaring on the stereo with big Norwiegen flags on the sticking off the back of the car. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Every once in a while I have entertained the idea of picking up stakes and moving back to Norway. I want to open a Milwaukee style coffe shop/resturaunt in Oslo.. Then spend the rest of my life chatting folks up and serving the best damm coffee around...

there are thousands of these

Norwegians and Swedes like bashing eachother

So what's the difference between a Norwegian and a canoe?
Well, a canoe will sometimes tip.

Little Ole was sitting at the kitchen table doing his school homework. He had a puzzled look on his face at he considered the assignment that was due--writing an essay about his origin. He turned to question his mother. "Mama, vere did Grandma come from?" he asked. "Da stork brought her," answered mama Lena. "And vere did yew come from?" asked Little Ole. "Da stork brought me," his mother answered. "And vere did I come from?" Little Ole inquired. "Vell, son, da stork brought yew, tew," mama Lena replied. With a scowl on his face, Little Ole picked up his pencil, turned to his school tablet, and began writing his essay: "Dere have been no natural births in our family for three yenerations."

"Hey Sven, how many Swedes does it take to grease a combine?"
"I don't know, Ole."
"Only two, if you run them through real slow."

Ole and Lars were on their very first train ride, heading to Minneapolis. They had brought along bananas for lunch. Just as they began to peel them, the train entered a long, dark tunnel. "Have you eaten your banana yet?" Ole asked excitedly. "No," replied Lars. "Vell don't touch it den," Ole exclaimed. "I yust took vun bite and vent blind!"

What is a party game played by Swedes?
One Swede goes into a box and the other Swede tries to guess which Swede is in it.

A Swede was walking down the street with a duck under his arm.
- "Where did you find that monkey?" asked the Norwegian.
- "It happens to be a duck." claimed the Swede.
- "Shut up, Swede! I am talking to the duck."

"I need to buy some boards there, Sven."
"How long you want 'em, Ole?"
"Long time. I'm building a house, ya know."

There's a new Norwegian insurance policy.
It's called "My Fault Insurance."

Once there was a Norwegian named Ole who took his wife with him wherever he went so that he wouldn't have to kiss her goodbye.

That Sweden sucks just made me laught so hard http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. And the sauna-part also. The good thing is that we don´t really mean to be evil to each other, just as someone sayed.

And Greenhorn, it is always nice to know how widely we are spread. And good to know that someone still keeps up with the traditions.

And Skarphol the thing is that Iraq, Pakistan and other countries like that are so different in cultures, different religion and such. Scandinavians are mainly still normal Europeans, we just happen to live up north.

True, but virtually all of Finland is situated north of 60 degrees. Finland is the only country to be able to build a modern society so north (Island is so small place that I'm not even counting Island as a country). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

The first ten largest cities of Sweden are situated below 60 degrees. 70.0% people living in Canada live south of the 49 degrees.

Excuse me????

You seem to forget that Norway has the world's northermost city with a population greater than 50.000 (Tromsø) at 69?40"²N.

The northernmost town, Longyearbyen, is at Spitzbergen (Norwegian terrotiry) at 78?13"²N 15?33"²E.

Here you'l also find the world's most northern bank, night club, hotel, etc.!

Besides, there are lots of thriving communities all over Northern Norway, many of which lies further north than Finland.

I must correct you on this one, Viktor!

I'm not sure about what birthrate there is for the rest of Scandinavia, but Norway is on fourth place in Europe with 1,78 births pr woman. Ireland is on first place with 1,86, France second with 1,84, Cyprus has 1,82.
Russia, Italy and Spain has only 1,28 births pr. woman, Lithuania 1,20, Ukraine 1,17. Thats low.

The western european societies needs an average of 2,1 births per woman to maintain their populations. The fact that populations are rising in all western Europe is due to imigration. In Russia there is very litle imigration and the population is dwindling, even though there has been a slight peak lately. The number of fertile women between 20 and 30 years in Russia will fall from 12 million to 8 million in 10 years, so Russia is heading for big trouble.
My sister is married to an Italian, he has 2 sisters and a brother still living in Italy, and none of them has any children. They say it's quite common in Rome not to have children. Scary, if you ask me.
In a few generations Europe will be totally dependent on huge hordes of imigrants. Not that we aren't that allready, at least in Norway, where unemployment are below 2%, and everybody is craving for more skilled manpower...

There's a lot of discussion regarding swedish girls considered as "easy" here. Here is a personal thought on that matter...

When being abroad I always find it easier to score than in Sweden. Why?

Theory 1: Swedish girls are not "easy" - it's just a popular myth stemming from some swedish movies spread during the 60:ies.

Theory 2: When meeting foreign girls, they have naturally heard about the myth and thinks that: "okay, he's used to "easy" girls so I'd better not disappoint him playing hard to get".

Theory 3: It's swedish men that are easy, not the women. Thereby the swedish women gets laid a lot and the myth about THEM being easy is spread world wide. Hmm, I'm not that hard to get thinking of it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is there a connection here ? Anybody got any ideas ?
http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

I must correct you on this one, Viktor!

I'm not sure about what birthrate there is for the rest of Scandinavia, but Norway is on second place in Europe with 1,78 births pr woman. Ireland is on first place.
Italy and Spain has only 1,25 and 1,28 births pr. woman, and Russia as low as 1,10 pr woman.

The western european societies needs an average of 2,1 births per woman to maintain their populations. The fact that populations are rising in all western Europe is due to immigration.

Not bragging but in the past I had a lot of gfs. When thinking about "easy" I can divide them into three groups. Group A from Germany, Poland, Norway, Sweden, and France. Group B were from Korea, China, Mongolia, Russia, and the Phillipines. Group C were Caribbian.

Group A was the most difficult while group B was the easiest.

That's not to say that all from group B were easy. In fact, group B is where you'll find the most traditional women.

My personal preference is group A because I like women who make their own decisions and are not subserviant to society or culture. I prefer strong minded intellegent women. Northern Euro women are keepers and require a lot of relationship maintanence.

Hi there my Nordic friends! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

First off, i am an Englishman from a city called Newcastle Upon Tyne, but was wondering if somebody out there could help me out with some queries? I watched a BBC documentary a while back called "Blood of the Vikings" which proved that many people from the North East coast of England (and elsewhere) share genetic ancestry with Nordic peoples, as a result of Viking settlements/occupation.

Though i do not profess to be a historian i believe that the genetic swab test results were mainly from the Denmark area. The folks of Newcastle as any Brit will tell you are known as "Geordies" and we have our own unique form of
language....which most of our fellow countrymen can't understand a bloody word of LOL http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I have heard that many of these words are actually Scandinavian in origin...such as "Gan" meaning to go and "hyem" meaning home. Can any of you Norse lads out there shed any light on this....I.E. is it true?

Strangely enough, i find it very easy to believe hehe....Geordies have very "Vikingesque" characteristics, such as drinking far too much, starting fights for no apparent reason, and hitting each other over the head with heavy objects. Uncanny. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif LOL....there is some truth in this but i'm only kidding.....in general we are very friendly and amiable hehe. A lot of North English/Scottish words are Nordic, including the ones you mentioned. Other examples include "toon" for town and "bairn" for children. It comes from Norwegian "tun" – farm yard and "barn – children respectively.

Most regular English words for weather and sea trips are of Nordic decent too. The words rain, wind, frost, snow, East, West, starboard, rope and bow are all immediately understandable to a Norwegian speaker.

A few words thats simillar.

Moder - Mother

Broder - Brother

Fem - Five

Fyra - Four

I know from reading differant articles and historybooks that there are english words derriving from the nordic language from wiking times.

One has to remember thet even though many words comes from nordic, that nordic language hasnt been spoken for centurys. The "swedish" for example that was spoken by swedish wikings is something todays swedes would understand wery little of.

So even if words or frazes at that time where the same, thoose words bear little recemblance with todays swedish, norwegian, danish and finish. There are however simillarities in many "small" words like "brother".

That beeing said, the wiking "visiting" your beatiful country proppably isnt the whole story. If one goes back further the fact is that almost all european languages is born out of the same orginal tounge ( Indoeuropean ) Its belived the it was first developed and spoken by a culture north or northeast of the Caspian sea, some belive however it oroginated in todays Turky. ( 4000 Bc.)

The indoeuropean language family consists today of 150 language spoken by 3 billion people. The orginal indoeuropean is however extinct.

Most europeans today speak a indoeuropean language with the exeption of Finish, Estonian, Hungarian and Baskian ( dont know if Baskian is the proper english word )

So u see, its not suprising all language have borrowed words from eachother, even if wikings added a few more where they wernt supose to. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Many of you outside of Scandinavia have been very fond of the scandinavian women, but mark my words, be careful around icelandic woman like this little story will tell you:

Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given
their new wives duties.

The first man had married a Woman from Colorado and had told her
that she was going to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a
couple days, but on the third day he came home to a clean house and
dishes washed and put away.

The second man had married a woman from Nebraska He had given his
wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the
cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day
he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean,
the dishes were done, and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man had married a girl from Iceland . He told her that her
duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed,
laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said
the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see
anything, but by the third day some of the swelling had gone down and
he could see a little out of his left eye, enough to fix himself a
bite to eat and load the dishwasher.

I remember my boss telling me with a grin, when it looked like I would be traveling on assignment to Iceland (about 20 years ago), that

'There's girl behind every tree in Iceland'

Is it true ?

"If you're traveling in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
For she was once a true love of mine.

Well, if you go when the snowflakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see for me if she's wearing a coat so warm
To keep her from the howli'n winds.

If you're travelin' in the north country fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the borderline
Remember me to one who lives there
She once was a true love of mine."
