View Full Version : Can I D-load Maps for FMB?

Hi All,

after years of playing the QMB I've decided to make the big leap and get into FMB.

But, after hours of reviewing all the maps I noticed they are rather lame. I like mountains, not mole-hills. I like to d-fight in difficult areas. I know there are other maps out there because I've seen them. I flew online in a very mountainous terrain on one server.

I'm 99% sure the AI aces would fly into the mountains but I thought it might be interesting to have ground targets in difficult places.

Can someone please point me in the right direction to d-load some maps?

Thanks in advance. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Check out the online maps. There is at least one with a proper set of snow capped mountains on it.I used it to try and have Mossies bombing a factory at low level with a steep pull up at the end of the run. I had to reduce it to me and a wingman in the end as the AI would inevitably forget to pull up on the approach through the valley.

Its a nice map for screenshots too-very scenic.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yep. Try the 'online' maps in there. You can't download maps in FB/PF. The same as planes, objects, etc., maps are hardcoded and only the devs can put them into the game.

It's surprising you didn't know yet, Pirsch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

C'mon Fritz, get with the program http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

You can DL map templates (maps loaded with objects so you are not just flying around a untouched wilderness).

Go to Mission4today.com http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I've got a very unsual map there at M4T, Fritz

go to downloads, and look for map templates. Look for Kwangsi province, China, based on the Kursk map. have some low level fights amongst the terrain near the middle of the map<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

PirschJ, the best map is Kuban, the southern corner. Very mountainous with NO RIVERS cutting up the forests, and somewhat larger mountainous area than the tiny Online Summer 4 "dogfight" map, and Kuban offers sea coastline. This is the map tech that Oleg should have focused on, as its truly a customer winner.

Its the most immersive terrain -- try it at sunset or sunrise (sunrise adds fog shrouded mountains). I used to love making TB-3 formation missions with I-153 escorts and CR.42 interceptors, TB-3s flying about 3000 meters. Now with the Ki-27 (and J8A "gladiator") also make good fits with this concept. Most beautiful is flying CR.42 intercept with the CR.42 cockpit lighting at sunset, the most beautiful cockpit lighting in any sim. Most fun is flying the TB-3 (and manning gunner positions) and watching your -153 escorts tangle with the enemy biplanes and then vanish into dogfights far behind. Good mission design will allow later escorting flights to meet your bomber formations and help protect against more incoming interceptors.

Also good is Pacific Fighters Japan map, up and down the map center. Very impressive mountainous terrain covering even greater area than the southern corner of the Kuban map. Czech em out.

And, wellcome to FMB<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hi guyz,

thanks for the responses. I haven't been able to open the M4T site due to the net damage caused by Tuesdays earthquake in the south. It seems the undersee cable was damaged. I still can't figure why I can open the IL-2 site.

Anyways, I looked at both the online summer 4 and the Kuban map. The online summer is more of what I was looking for. But even still, the mountains are not as high as I wished.

Ok, my first mission. I like a challenge but not necessarily from another plane. It's been done. Using the online summer map I made my homebase in the south west corner, south side of the mountain. Clouds at 500 and weather set to "worst" (thunder). I'm forced to takeoff in a southerly direction to avoid detection(My wife sleeps at the north end of the field).

Using the Me163 my mission is to attack a top secret weapons manufacturing facility at the north shore of the lake in the north east corner of the map. Sounds easy right? Wrong.

Docked at the factory is a Russian sub that had snuck up the river late lastnight under the cover of darkness and storm. My commanding officer tells me it's extremely important that I sink the sub and equally important that I return with my top secret uber-rocket, dead or alive. But here's the trick. I have enough fuel to get there and attack the sub, but not enough to return.

So, I attacked the sub a few times until I was out of ammo. I immediately climbed to 11,000m just in time to run out of fuel and glide back to base. But, there's the storm and the base is hard to find.

It was fun and went well. Then to spice things up, I loaded the TB3 with the biggest and heaviest bombs. It's a bit of work getting off the ground and such but it was cool too.

Well, nothing too historical. Just practicing to get the hang of FMB. Imagine, over 4 years of flying IL-2 and I'm just starting FMB now. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

One thing I noticed, AI can't see the mountains. I wish I could get them to follow me. Instead they get their wheels off the ground long enough to hit rock and send messages back from beyond: "AAAAAHHHH! I'm hit" or something like that. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

So you never played the infamous DGEN New Guinea campaigns... Yep, AI can put a bullet between your eyes flying at 600 kmh in a 80?? angle, but can't avoid a hill. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

You know, the earthquake fudged up the undersea cables near Taiwan. The internet cannot open most sites outside of China. I'm amazed this one works really well but I guess Oleg had a patch or something.

Anyways, it's estimated to take about 3 weeks to repair the damage. So, it's another 3 weeks of "online summer 4". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Well, I remember someone asking about this 4 years ago but I thought that since the game had developed as far as it has that we'd finally have some sort of map making options by now. Let's face it, the game is pretty much near the end. The patch whiners have all but left the building.

I'd love to be able to create my own topography and model some other land scapes. I find it really hard to believe there would have been no air warfare in the alps.

Imagine a hunt and kill scenario where you have to search for and destroy a train that is snaking through the mountains in bad weather, or even a convoy. This is the sort of mission I was hoping to create, something that combines flying around obtacles and targeting the enemy.

So far, I must admit I am less than impressed with FMB. We have the possibility to build mountains but you cannot set anything on top of them. The is only one thing you can set on top of the "movable" mountain but it's simply a flying castle.

In the end, I expected more.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Ok, I finally got the Kwangsi map. I downloaded two files: MIS and Prpoerties.

What do I do with these? Which folders do I drop them into?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

OK, never mind, I figured it out.

The Kwansi map is a flat map with islands pasted. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
