Ok, just a random request for some informations. Nothing in particular really, but from all the planes under regular discussion I really miss the Me410. I know the precedessors, the 210, was far from beeing a good aircraft.
But the bit a god my hands on indicate that the 410 was a really good aircraft. I even think I remember Oleg once stating (years ago) the 410 by the russians was regarded higher then the Mossi. Then again it heavily suffered in 44. But so did every other german fighter, even the high profile ones. Aside the data findable via google I'd really like to hear the opinion of the more educated people here. Please no flames, though.

one complaining about the Me 410 construction from the KGs that had to use this plane as "fast bombers" to attack the UK was that its bombbay could not use 2xSC500 ! the doors could not close totaly than , causes lot of drag.
only the less usefull (for attacks on cities) SD500s could be used or 1xSC500 or 2xSC250.....

the KGs would have much preferred the Ju88S

as interceptors agaisnt Bombers, well, heavily loaded with additional armamant like MG151/20, MK103 or 5cm canons in the bombbay - they were easy targets for the escorting US fighters...... like the Bf110 too.

to get a better performance, for normal loaded or heavy armed Me410s - there was the typical engine proplem of the germans in the WW2..... and sure the proplem to get better fuel too.

in general, the Me410 was a good plane - but to late, comming in a time with enemy airsuperiority.

anyway, i can recommend the book:
"Messerschmitt Bf110,Me210,Me410"
Heinz Mankau/Peter Petrick

Interesting infos so far, thanks a lot for that.

How did the 410 compare to other aircraft in similiar roles, though? P-38, Mossi, Beaufighter, Whirlwind, Dinah, Pe2 come to mind.

It is clear that the 410 always had to operate in pretty hostile environments, especialy going against bombers and as such beeing easy prey to other fighters. But in a clear fighter configuration without any extra equipment, with equal conditions, how did it fare? It's top speed, armament and climb rate do not sound too bad, though unsurprisingly outclassed by single engined fighters.

a Me410A-1 , so a "Schnellk√¬§mpfer" is given with:

at high weight (11,3 t , this is including two 500kg bombs)
485km/h at 0m
575km/h at 6300m

at 9,5t
490km/hat 0m
590km/h at 6300m

you can consider all "Zerst√¬∂rer" variants (except very few "one crew/less weight" versions) with more armour and guns (additional weight and drag) as not faster http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

its climb and manouverability was not one of its strength , Messerschmitt gave this plane to small wings for that.

comparing to a Pe2, it missed a horizontal bombsight.
a P-38 is a totaly different affair !

i would put it between the Beaufighter and the Mosquito.

unfortunatly (for the plane, not for the history) the for the Me410B planed DB603G never came into the production - the 410B still had to soldier on with the older DB603A.......

planed for a Me410B-1 as Schnellk√¬§mpfer with DB603G was 630km/h in 8100m !

AFAIK the ME 410 B was built with DB 603E's, which were pretty much the same as the 603G, in fact the supercharger was taken from the 603G (quite similiar to the case of the DB 605AS engines btw!)

anyway, this book

its claiming that it is highly unlikely that any Me410 had another engine than the DB603A.
its doubtfull that Messerschmitt did any changes to its construction of the engine mount that the DB603E could be used.
