View Full Version : Most Memorable Flight...

(Hope this is ok in here)

I just wondered what peoples most memorable flights where and also what was the most damaged aircraft they managed to get back to base and land without killing yourself (belly landings are admissable).

I think my two favourite flights where finally getting a kill online after about a 10 minute swirling, target changing battle.. I think I latched onto the one I got about 3 times during the flight then almost crashing when a loop turned into a hammerhead when showing off at the end (turned out quite cool in the end as the hammerhad when straight into the landing. ).

The most damaged aircraft I got back to base was a Beaufighter on a Single player mission I created to destroy a VII U-Boat. The U-Boats AA fire left me with 1 engine and no Rudder along with various holes in the fusealage and wings.

I was at this point just Northeast of the River to the East of the D-Day beaches and heading towards France. I managaed to fly, mainly at < 100m altitude, back to the UK airfield and land it. Sadly the landing wasn't entirely successfull in so much as I lost the undercarriage. I was having to keep the remaining engine at 100% to maintain airspeed so when I flattened out to land I was unable to keep her straight and she landed at an angle which ultimately ripped off the gear.. but I survived as did my radio man and we had got home in one piece http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. Was hugely enjoyable flight back though constantly fighting altitude and the planes wish to turn right with the remaining flight controls.

once had to land a corsair on an aircraft carier, splattered oil on my cockpit, leaking fuel, half shot up elevator and my engine cut out just as i was on a landing path....but still managed to land and reach the sucker only suffering broken gear. Way back in Original Il-2, I was messing about in the I-16 and put it in a vertical dive from 10,000m. The control surfaces gradually broke off and it pulled itself out of the dive with only one aileron left. I then managed to land the aircraft! No elevators, rudder, just one aileron, flaps and throttle...

That's some achievement.. the one think I've not managed anything like well yet is no elevators. I tend to end up a smoking hole right at the end ( much like the DC-10 which crashed with 100% hyrdaulic failure, get it fine up to final approach then bang).

Most memorable:My first round trip flight in a Me-262 without becoming a "flying Zippo"(having an engine fire).

Most damaged: An IL-2 w/ the tip missing from one wing,several large holes in the other,one aileron and one elevator;and a seriously smoking engine.I bailed out as soon as it was sliding slow enough,it blew up as soon as the pilot dove to the ground.Fun stuff! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

I once survived 40 MG-151/20 hits in my P-47 in WC online, plus all those other guns on the FW-190 whilst I was over the Normandy coast. The 190 pilot ran out of ammo, waggled his wings and flew off. I was 4500 meters high, and the English "island base" looked VERY far away. I couldn't even see it yet, only the beaches of Normandy! My Thundybolt had massive holes everywhere, the fuselage, wings, my left wingtip was shot off, holes in my canopy, broken gunsight, the whole nine yards! Then, 5 km. off the coast of Normandy, my engine coughed and died.

My P-47 kept gliding, though poorly, and I managed to make a perfect deadstick landing at the English "island base!" I was so proud of myself and my Thundybolt!

My most memorable flight was when PBNA was fully together. We held a coop and some people joined, but it was Russian LaGG-3's vs. a HUGE German bomber formation of He-111's and escorting fighters. We all took our LaGG's and attacked the formation. Through a ton of effort we managed to make most of the Heinkels drop their bombs prematurely, though I ran out of cannon ammunition. But by then the fighters had locked onto us. In a drag and bag maneuver I don't know how we pulled off to this day, my squaddies pulled a 109 onto their tail and with my one UBS machine gun, I personally downed five 109's! It was so immersive, so much fun, and yet, scary, that it sticks in my mind.

There was another episode I had offline in the Stalingrad campaign. (I got the idea from MysticPuma) I was being chased in my Yak by 109's and 190's and dove down into the city, weaving in and out of the smokestacks and tall buildings. Without firing a shot I knocked four bogies off my six when they crashed dramatically into smokestacks. I shot down one and the rest flew off. That was an adrenaline rush!

In a VEF mission, it was FW-190A4 vs Yak-1B in air superiority, 5v6.

All of my teammates got shot down after 30 seconds of turn fighting. So I run like hell, get away from the swarm and reposition.

I return and do over a dozen hit and run attacks, using speed and clouds to escape each time, getting 3 kills.

The last 3 players chased me all over the map, while I tried to drag them over flak, and pop out of clouds to shoot at them. Eventually I run out of gas and have to bail. A few minutes later the Yaks run out of gas too.

I single handedly brought down the whole team, and all of them were either killed or captured.

I was online on 'Zekes vs wildcats' and participated in a flight of 17 or 18 Betty's on their way to destroy shipping.
Most were shot down by Hellcats with rockets but I and a teammate managed to escape damaged and an airkill each.

Another time we were 16 Dauntlesses (and a few escorts) in a similar mission, but I think all of us bought it that time because we were countinuosly attacked by zeros before we even had lost sight of our own base.

I have only experienced this kind of teamwork on 'Zekes'. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Hmm, mine was over on Pacific Conflict;

We were flying late war on the Okinawa map, and three of us in Ki-84 and one J2 got bounced by a passel of Corsairs and Hellcats. There were planes and tracers going everywhere, and almost immediately, we had additional aircraft jumping into the fight.

My wingman got jumped by a Corsair and I dove back down and blew his tail off in a very lucky high defelction shot. My wingman broke for home since he was smoking and shotup, and I got up above him and followed him out of the fight.

When he broke off to land, I turned back to the fight, which had gone down to the deck. Since I was above the fight by this point, I perched up on one wing and looked down into the fight for a victim. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I picked up a Hellcat and dove down on him and gave him all 4 20mm in a quick burst and down he went.

Then all hell broke loose and I had three different Hellcats jump in and start shooting at me! I got several holes punched in my canopy and wings and started leaking fuel, but managed to stay in the fight and avoid getting any major holes blown in me! Another Ki-84 jumped in and confused the issue and I managed to reverse on the Hellcats and after a crazy vertical fight, managed to get a quick snapshot into one and brewed him up. Scratch number three.

The furball was still going on, but I was shot full of holes and leaking gas, so I decided to break for home. No such luck! Tracer fire went sailing past, and I started rolling and turning while trying to spot who bounced me. Another crazy turn and vertical fight ensued, and we started getting VERY close to the deck.

I finally got a good tally on the other plane, just as he was making another run on my six. I broke hard and then pulled up almost vertical, rolled over and scissored back into him. He lost me in the manervering, and I jumped back in on his low 6, and after a good long burst of the 20mm's, I had my 4th kill! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (/salute Flatspin!)

I managed to make it back to base, and my engine ran out of gas on the approach, but I glided in and landed successfully.

I did have to take a quick break and catch my breath after that one though, the fight had been so hairy and intense that I was drenched in sweat and my hands were shaking like crazy from all the adreneline!

My most memorable flight was about a year ago with my TeamUSA buddies flying 18+ B25's with skins from the 57th BW in typical 12thAF 6 ship formation on Historia.

B-25- just completed a low level attack on the japanese airbase on the Pacific Islands QMB map. Picked up some flak damage over the field but then exited over the bay and straight over another flak gun that shot the Hell out of me. Blew off a aerilon caused numerous leaks and severely damaged the port engine.Limped out to sea trailing thick black smoke.

Too low to bail and really didn't want to ditch I shut down the port engine when it started to overheat and make a lot of loud screaming noises.Lots of rudder then to counter the remaining engine which was running at full power. However on approach to the allied island it was obvious that I was too low to clear the surrounding hills. I took a chance and restarted the port engine again.With the extra power I managed to claw back enough altitude to clear the hills and drop down into the valley on the other side. I turn to port in the direction of the airfield at the end of the valley.

Port engine is now struggling VERY badly but I'm almost home so I decide to chance it. Wrong decision as a few seconds later the engine bursts into flame! So now I'm in a narrow valley on one engine, damaged controls and on fire. I eventually clear the valley and can see the field. Gentle starboard turn, line up on the approach. Almost there I drop the gear as I am almost down. Second major wrong decision as the sudden drag reduces the speed to below stall and the port engine suddenly drops causing catastrophic ground loop ripping the wing off and causing the aircraft to hit hard on its side. It slides to a stop and the crew bails. However the crash has killed the bombardier in the nose.

I took some comfort in that if it was real then the crew would have evacuated the nose section prior to impact.

I kept the replay for a long time but unfortunately lost it when transfered to my new rig.

Co op flight in a B25. Air start, had to attack a Japanese carrier with torpedoes then land on a carrier (as you do).

Hit the target, picked up a hit to an engine but just a couple of our flight managed to reach the carrier.

Port engine died on final approach but got it down and slid to a stop right on the end of the deck, a-la the bus in the Italian Job.
