I like to fly these, but am I glad I don't have to look at them!

(PS) NOT the P38. I love it AND it's purty. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

Edited for inclusion of all planes.

That's an interesting idea. Hmmm! I have found that the fighter aeroplanes with the best flight characteristics also look the best. I'm interested to see what other people think. The FW190 Long nose gets my vote. Love to fly it/hate to see it!

J2M.

Looks bloated and heavy.
Though I am more impressed every time I fly it.

Ta-183. Yes, I like flying it but it looks completely wrong.

IMHO, Wildcat is one of the ugliest things ever to get airborne, but has rather pleasant flight characteristics in the game.

Buffalo isn't a pretty thing to look at, but it's my favorite Rata killer http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

NO PLANE is uglier then the G-50.....It even makes the I-16 (which is my ugly love, in fact it really grows on you look wise).....So if you love the G-50....Know you win http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

p.s.....The F4 is sezzy, not B58 or F101 or even F104 sezzy, yet more the brawling brute amongst the fencers.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder, but this plane does not make any common sence to me:

If it looks right, it'll fly right.

If it looks right but flies wrong, or looks wrong but flies right, you're best advised to get a new optician...

The Grumman birds in post #1 of this thread are a case in point. The Hellcat looks better than the Wildcat, but then again it was!

Meanwhile the Goblin was nasty in almost every respect...

That's funny.... My thoughts exactly. The F6F5 is a great plane to fly, but I don't like to look at it either! - for that I'll stick to my 190A or 109G http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

190D has a very elegant look, but Ta 152 is funhouse mirror fugly.

Any and all American WWII fighters except the P-51 and the P-38 are pretty hideous, whereas the Mustang and the Lightning are really elegant and even futuristic in their designs.

This is no nationalistic digg, but I find most every german plane techno-ugly. The 109 is one of the most functionally ugly planes I can think of.

Here's another to the list.

for planes in Il-2, well the Stuka is pretty damn ugly. pretty effective, at least in the early stages of the war. The B-24 is pretty ugly.

P-40 Tomahawks are kinda fugly but they handle pretty nice overall.

as for modern-ish planes, the Tupolev Bear:

Bring two stakes then. I'm with Hayate. The Hurri is the ugliest of the ugliest, even though it was the RAF's best and my personal favorite "red" plane to fly. The only uglier canopy is the 109.

Sorry WHirlin, just being honest. Heck, you know I'm not dissin you Brits. I've already offered up two of my country's greatest fuglies. To extend my comments, what the Hurri DOES have is character and history...in spades. Plus that aircraft is a metaphor for life. She did all the laundry and cooking while her gorgeous sister went to the ball.

The Gannet is sure ugly. After seeing a Bear up and close in India they are darn ugly too.

Notable mentions include the He177, Hampden, Whitley and 99% of pre war British bombers with the exception of the Wellington and Blenheim.

Whilst I agree for the most part, the Me210 is one flaw in this aspect.

it looks fantastic, but was a real bad plane..

HuninMunin
02-28-2008, 08:21 AM
Was it?
Wich version do you mean?

Ironicaly the version that was first scetched out on the drawing board entered service in form of the 210 C and Me 410.

It was Messerschmitt himself that shortened the tail f.e. to cut down material cost ( against all efford by the orignial design crew).

The hungarian Cs and the 410 were remarkable aircraft and possibly the best incarnation of the Zerstöer idea from the Axis.

He111 is one ugly SOB, no doubt. Blenheim plays in the same league, as does the Lancaster and the He177.

Ugliest fighter? must be all the La fighters. I can't stand them, I do not even want to fly them just for their looks. Ugly to the core. (Now the MiG 3 on the other hand.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/heart.gif)

I'm going to have to go with all of the Yak-# series. They just don't look right, the fuselage is way too long for the rest of the plane.

Bv-141, awesome flying machine, one of the best.
Fast for it's available power. Only flight report
I ever read said it was an excellent flying machine
with no vices.
The idea was to give a "Wonder Woman" for the sircrew
for reconisance purposes.

I would not call it fugly, but it sure looks strange.

Sometimes they look wrong, and they really are...

Curtiss XP-55 Ascender after a airworthy restoration.
It's at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo, but it is owned by the Smithstonian.
Despite rumors to the contrary, I doubt they will fly it.

Note though, that thin SWEPT laminar flow wing.
Excellent wing on the WRONG airplane.

Looks like a fat penguin... but it is one of the best plane in the game to fly. Stable, quite fast, turns well, great roll rate.
But God, it's ugly...
