The Norwegians are so industrious at recovering Luftwaffe relics, they are likely to be able to field an entire Luftflotte in a few years! They have cornered the market on Ju 88s of all types, for example. Incredible. The Germans ought to be giving them a subsidy!

Here's the article translated from Norwegian:

Some facts
December 15th, 1943 the German FE-190 A2 Yellow 16 made an emergency landing between Langemura and Little V??r??na at Solsvik. It was found last year by the Naval vessel ???Tyr???. It will be recovered today. The plane originally served with Staffel 12 at Herdla. After conservation, the plane will be returned to Herdla war museum.

up into the light after 63 years

The FW 190 that crashed near Solsvik in 1943 is being recovered. Entusiasts has worked quietly for years with the plans.

The whole thing started in 1995 in connection whit the 50 year anniversary of the peace on 1945, the local historian Martha Ekerhovd learned that there was a German plane in the sea outside Solsvik. It had crashed there during the war. In 1995 she was the principal at Misje school. She wanted to know more about the plane, and got more information from her uncle, Johannes Misje, and Jakob Langeland, bout who had heard the story from those involved back then in 1943.

Finding expertise

Martha got in contact with Svein Ove Agdestein, who she knew as an airplane enthusiast, and the ball started rolling. The two of them rose the interest of Halvor Sperbund, Ivar Nordland, Geir Tangen, Olav Helvig and Ole Bj??rn S??lensminde, all of them with a solid interest in war history.

This was the start of Work-group FW 190 A2 ??? Yellow 16, with the aim of finding and recovering the plane who had been a part of Staffel 12 at Herdla. The first search was in 1995/96 and again in 2004, but without luck. Last summer, they got help from the naval vessel ???Tyr???. They found the plane at first attempt, at 60 meter (180 ft) depth.

Controlled emergency landing

Eye-witneses from back then told that the pilot followed the plane into the depth, but managed to get loose and reached the surface, where he was saved by two local fishermen.

- How far the pilot followed the plane down is unknown, but it could hardly have been all 60 meters, says airplane mechanic Halvor Sperbund. The pilot had obviously made a controlled emergency landing, we can see that from the underwater photos, Sperbund explains. The photos shows damage to the tail.

- The pilot was strapped in well, but could loosen the harness with a simple knocking to the lock. Then he would have had to wiggle free of the cockpit and the seat after the plane had tuched down on water. He must have blown of the hood prior to landing, it is nowhere to be found. After getting free of the plane, he could have triggered the gas-cartridge for his life-west which would have brought him to the surface rather quickly, Sperbund continues.
The machine had not been in combat. The pictures taken by ???Tyr??? show the gun covers over the canons being in place.

The plane was sitting in a steep underwater rocky slope at 40 degrees, nose downwards. The machine is in exceptionally. The project group have held the cards close to their chest all the time, fearing divers would learn about the wreck and plundering it.

I've been inside the U boat that was recovered in similar water conditions that was at Liverpool (although the museum I think has gone bust now) and it was surprisingly intact, especially the parts above the water line (it sank upright).

Also, you might expect an aircraft to corrode less due to the materials employed.

Hi Friendly_Flyer.

I did not have the time to be there during the recovery, but I am involved in researching this fascinating aircraft.

And yes, the biology attached to this machine was intriguing, to say the least! Imagine how it would smell after a few days if they didn't clean it up! I have smelled such recovered aircraft and I can assure you it is not something you'd like to get close to!

Meanwhile, I am working on a skin for this baby:

To several of your comments, the ultra cold water inhibits both corrosion and marine growth.. couldn't ask for a better spot to rest under water.. truely remarkable shape in any case.

"What is the plan for the plane now? Restoration at Herdla? "

It will now first be cleaned, of course (we both know what happens if they don't) and then they will preserve the aircraft in its current state, at least initially. This may sound odd in these days when Fw 190s are built from scratch, but it will in fact be a very valuable piece of history as it will show original colours and markings. A remarkable documentation if you ask me.

For the last 5 years I've been going to Flying Legend at Duxford. Its now a date in my calender whith all the markings on it not to miss it!!!
Although each year, the organizers try to get a rare aircraft over to the show, I was wondering what would be a real treat?
I was thinking of the the two Me109 based in Germany, as well as the ME262 from the Messerschmitt foundation (although a recent developement, I still would like to see it fly with its contemporaries) and the recent newly built FW190 from FlugWerk GmbH (same comment as above).
Another rare view would be the other flying Lancaster from Canada; that would be a sight to behold to see it fly next to BoB memorial flight Lancaster!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Maybe I had to be a bit clearer in my question http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif.
I was wondering which flyable WW2 airplane you would like to see at Fighter Legends. But off course, if dreams would come true, I really would to like to see a Tempest or a Typhoon fitted with a Sabre engine in the air again. The sound of this engine was apparently spine chilling!!

The Beaufighter is definitely something to look forward to.As is the P61 currently in restoration somewhere in the US

You can have no idea just how hostile aircraft can be until they come to your area...
Aircraft which strafe or bomb your positions should be regarded with suspicion, if not deep mistrust. Aircraft which bomb and strafe your position and wear a red circle should certainly be regarded with deep mistrust. In fact, the deeper the better. A six-foot-deep slit trench is an ideal place from which to mistrust them...

My brother knows the main person 'recruiting' the aircraft and pilots for that show.
I spoke to her at last years show, and she said she was disappointed that the surprise aircraft that was lined up for the show couldn't make it. The surprise aircraft was the Zero. I can't remember which mark it was of this type, but there could be more info on it in the brochure (if I remember correctly the Zero is pictured on the front cover of last years exhibition brochure). It might turn up at next years show.

Sorry if I spoil a surprise!

Other than the Zero I would lke to see the Me 262 or a FW 190 if there is an original one flying. I don't know if replica aircraft are allowed to participate, I don't think so though. It would be nice to see aproper Bf 109 and not the Buchon that was at last years (Saturday) show.
There's a big German flying boat (Do 24) somewhere in the world ....

That probably would have been the Zero A6M5 from the Planes of Fame , Chino California. Not too many flyable Zeros left in the world.
http://www.planesoffame.org/featured-aircraft.php?ID=4
It's not the first time Fighter Legends 'invited' some airplanes from that organization. It surely would have been a real surprise to see it!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Hopefully next year.
Btw, an original FW190 is under restoration in the US. http://www.white1foundation.org/

Also, the ME262 and the FW190 currently flying were all built following the original build plans. Makes you wonder how much of a replica these are (all the same except for the engines). The ME262 even received a new type designation, approved by the Messcherschmitt foundation, Germany, which followed the sequence up untill then built.
See http://www.stormbirds.com/ for more info on that subject
