OK, so me a weird bugga. But I still like to start up a plane, take off and fly some low & slow circuitry around the green every now and then.

Why? Well, the planes are just great as we all know and the FMs are accurate enough - as are the cockpits too - plus there's the sad fact of never being able to do it IRL (not with these types anyway).

But how about you? You find this kinda goof-arounding amusing at all?

PS. I'd also LIKE to believe that it might come in handy when/if I ever get around to actually getting a real PPL...

I got a few rides in a couple of very aerobatic aircraft a few years back with a display pilot but since then have hardly flown at all, I occassionally fire up the FMB and try to fly some accurate aerobatics (not just in the biplanes), you know "keeping within the box" and holding proper vertical lines and all that malarky, it's certainly helped my general sim flying but since I can't seem to get a ride in a real aircraft these days I can't tell if it's improved my RL technique! If you wanna form a gang to rob a bank then count me in, if we get away with it we might just be able to afford PPL's!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

You're not a weird "bugga" (or I'm one too). I too like to take a plane out for a stroll, just to enjoy the sensation of flying (or, the simulation of it) and to have a look at the scenery. The Crimea at sunset is very beautiful, with the fog rising from the sea and rivers.

What i think would be really cool to see with regards to non combat flying, is the forming of the worlds first (possibly?) online acrobatics team.

Know i'm not good enough, but i would definatly download a track of any of you lot performing together.

Just imagine how good you would have to be to fly a tight fromation loop together, smoke streaming from your wings, pref in a nice little v formation. now that would be some online skills...

I frequently go for a fly just to look at the scenery or practice pattern flying. I also run navigation exercises from time to time.

I have as much fun flying formation and carrier ops as anything.

There are some acrobatic teams already and they are amazing. Lost for the links at them moment.

hi toad, if you do get a chance, could you post the links if you can find them, cheers fruitbat

That makes me remember a mission the co set up for us a while ago... midnight, Lvov map, thunderstorm and no minimap or anything. We spawned in random positions in our buffalos, and the goal was to get to a certain base. Not many of us did http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif but was good fun.
Nowadays, I rarely fly in non-combat servers, but I like it with no minimap, some distances and ground targets. That adds the challenges of planning, cooperation and navigation to a combat-scenario. A short death-ban makes you very careful as well http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

If you look on this page http://www.netwings.org/library/Forgotten_Battles/Videos/index-2.html
you will find some acrobatic movies, there are also more of them on the fllowing pages aswell. These guys have their web pages listed with the movies, info and on the film I think. I'm at work so I can't view them to see.

Somedays I load up the Crimea map and turn on something like....Dark Side of the Moon and just fly around admiring the mountains and its also good practice for contour hugging.

Lots of people already know this but for some who don't that Castle on the coast by Yalta and the hill upon which it sits are not solid. Try and time it just right and you get an interesting screenshot as you pass through.

Yep...I do this sometimes too...good fun. Also valuable for learning the ins and outs of your favorite planes.

My non-combat flying tends to be when I`m flying to the combat area! I learn much during that time! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Well, I do do some quick flying in QMB if I need to test an aircraft for joystick, etc configuration... but that`s about it.

It already exists... I dont know if they are still around... they were young cats... 16 or 17... but the Silver Triggers...ST_Pawnee and a few others... are very good... and they made a few movies. Hit the Essentials link and go to Sunstar Entertainment... I think UCLANUPE has some of thier work on his site still.

A repeat of a post last March:

Land the Zero on floats on a river, or near the shore, with the canopy open. Kill the engine as soon as you touch down and listen to the water gurgle over the floats. Go to external and watch it rock in the swells near the shore as it slows down. Just beautiful.

There are a couple already,

Silver Triggers, very very good formation flying and all sorts of truly bizzare solo stunts (remember the FW-190 A-series vid . . cool stuff), and some entertaining exploitation antics.

There is another group that flies blue and white Mig-3s that are very very good, they also have (had?) some videos available that are quite excellent.

non combat flying? you betcha.

lately I have been trying to land in every type by first skimming the runway at 10' or so off the deck...at full throttle...at approx. halfway down the strip pull up and left and chop the throttle to zero/idle, complete the 180 turn at around 700-1000' depending on the type of plane...coasting along until the base final turn and drop flaps... maintain airspeed and bring it down for a nice three pointer *cough* all without ever touching the throttle again.

It feels good when you can do it consistently..especially in the manual landing gear types and it is a nice way to finish off a mission.

Not trying to be negative towards your posts or anything but just dont get non combat flight sims myself....reckon a lot more guys fly towards bogeys on autopilotX8 than are admiring the scenery...

I used to do it. Haven't done it in a while though mainly because I've been practicing bomb dropping and gunnery offline for a while now. Besides I get my fix of non-combat flying online flying formation practice with squadmates.

I do it at least once a week! I go in to the FMB and click on a random map, and take a random aircraft and just take off! I cruise around for an half-hour hour and just enjoy the adventures of flying...pretty relaxing and a good way to get away from dogfighting for a while...! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I usually visit one of my summer datchas http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif in Crimea for some Sunday flying. Just took a white & unmarked He-111H-6 for a spin actually, to see the sights & whatnot... and very low & slow that was too, around 280 KmphIAS / 500m AGL!

Very relaxing. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
